You typed "cghatgpt" — probably on a phone, or a keyboard with a slightly different layout, or just because your fingers were ahead of your brain. It's one of the most common typos on the internet, 124 million searches a month, and every result is either a thin explainer aimed at retirees or a Portuguese Medium post that doesn't help you build anything. You meant ChatGPT. So let's skip the "it's an AI chatbot made by OpenAI" paragraph you've already read fifteen times and get straight to the part that matters: how to use it as a developer, starting today.

Yes, it's a typo — and you're not alone

"cghatgpt" is a transposition of "chatgpt" that happens when your ring finger hits g before c, or when autocomplete on a non-English keyboard reorders the first few characters. OpenAI's product is called ChatGPT — chat.openai.com, or these days, chatgpt.com. If you were trying to reach the main interface, that's the URL. Bookmark it and move on.

But since you're here: the fact that you searched for this at all probably means you're trying to understand what ChatGPT actually does and whether it's useful for building things. The answer is yes, with conditions. The rest of this article is the guide I wish existed when I first started wiring it into my own projects.

What ChatGPT actually is (the version that matters for builders)

ChatGPT is a chat interface on top of OpenAI's language models — currently GPT-4o and o3 for paid users, GPT-4o mini for free. The consumer product at chatgpt.com is useful for one-off tasks. But as a developer, the interesting surface is the API: a single HTTPS endpoint that lets you send a message and get a response, programmatically, for a fraction of a cent per call.

The pricing as of mid-2025: GPT-4o mini is $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens. A token is roughly ¾ of a word. A typical 500-word code review costs you about $0.0003. GPT-4o is 25× more expensive but meaningfully smarter on complex reasoning tasks. o3, OpenAI's current flagship reasoning model, is more expensive still — use it when you need the model to actually think through a problem rather than pattern-match to an answer.

For most solo dev use cases — code generation, summarization, classification, structured data extraction — GPT-4o mini is the right default. You upgrade to GPT-4o or o3 when mini gives you wrong answers, not before.

Setting up the API in under ten minutes

You need an OpenAI account, a credit card, and about eight minutes. Here's exactly what to do.

    Go to platform.openai.com, sign up with your email, and navigate to Billing → Add payment method. Load $5. This is enough to run tens of thousands of test requests on GPT-4o mini. You won't hit it in a week of experimentation.

    Run it with npx tsx hello-gpt.ts (or ts-node, or compile it — whatever your setup is). You should see a clean two-sentence explanation of JWTs within two seconds. That's it. You're using the API.

    Set spending limits before you forget

    In the OpenAI platform, go to Limits and set a hard monthly cap — I use $20 for personal projects. One runaway loop with no limit can turn into a nasty bill by morning. Set the limit before you write anything beyond a hello-world.

I once shipped an endpoint that summarized user-uploaded PDFs. A scraper found it within six hours of deploy. No rate limiting, no auth, no spend cap. The bill was $612 by the time I woke up. Spend caps and auth middleware are not optional steps. Do both before you ship anything public.

The four ChatGPT use cases worth your time as a developer

Not every use case is equally valuable. Here's where I've seen the strongest ROI, ranked by how often I reach for them.

Code generation and explanation is the bread-and-butter use case and it genuinely works. "Write a function that takes an array of objects and groups them by a given key" is a task GPT-4o mini gets right in a single shot 90% of the time. "Explain what this 80-line Python function does" is nearly 100%. The model's knowledge cutoff is early 2025, so it knows about most frameworks you're using, but it will occasionally confuse old API signatures with new ones. Always run generated code.

Structured data extraction is underrated. If you have unstructured text — a user-uploaded resume, a scraped product page, a Slack message — and you need it as JSON, the API with response_format: { type: "json_object" } is genuinely faster than writing a regex pipeline and more reliable than most fine-tuned NLP models for low-to-medium volume.

Classification and routing is where the API pays for itself in apps. "Is this support ticket about billing, a bug, or a feature request?" is a perfect one-shot classification task. At $0.15/million tokens, you can classify 10,000 tickets for about $0.03. I replaced a brittle keyword-matching classifier in a side project with a four-line API call and it went from 71% accuracy to 94% overnight.

Draft generation for repetitive prose — email templates, changelog entries, error messages — is the last one I'd pull out. Not because it doesn't work, but because it's the easiest to overuse. Use it for structure; rewrite the actual words yourself if the output represents your voice.

Cursor: the fastest way to use ChatGPT without the API

If you're not ready to wire up the API in your own project, Cursor is the fastest onramp. Cursor is a code editor (fork of VS Code) with GPT-4o and Claude baked in at the editor level. $20/month for Pro. You write code, hit Cmd+K to edit inline or open the chat panel with Cmd+L, and describe what you want in plain English.

The two moves that changed how I work:

Cmd+K on a selection lets you say "refactor this to use async/await" or "add input validation and throw meaningful errors" and it rewrites the selection in place. This is faster than copying to chatgpt.com and pasting back — the context is already there, the file is already there, and you can accept or reject the diff in one keystroke.

@codebase in the chat panel lets you ask questions about your entire project. "Where do we handle authentication?" or "What's the pattern we use for database queries?" works remarkably well on repos up to about 50k lines. Above that it gets fuzzy, but for a solo dev's project it's close to magic the first time you see it answer correctly.

You don't need to understand the API to get value from Cursor. It's the right starting point if you're just trying to write code faster.

Prompt engineering: the three things that actually matter

Most "prompt engineering" content is noise. These three things cover 80% of the gains:

Be specific about format. "Summarize this" gets you a paragraph of varying length and quality. "Summarize this in exactly three bullet points, each under 20 words, no filler phrases like 'the author argues'" gets you something usable. The model defaults to whatever it thinks you want. Tell it explicitly.

Give it a role with constraints, not just a role. "You are a senior engineer" does almost nothing. "You are a senior engineer reviewing a PR. Your job is to find bugs and security issues only — do not comment on style, formatting, or naming conventions unless they create a correctness problem" gives the model a clear job description with scope constraints. The output quality difference is measurable.

Use the system prompt for stable instructions, the user prompt for variable input. If you're building a feature where the model does the same job on different inputs, put the job description in system and the data in user. Don't concatenate them into one giant user message — you lose the semantic separation the model is trained on.

The response_format: json_object flag tells the model to return valid JSON. It still hallucinates field names occasionally, so validate the shape with Zod or a simple check before you use the output downstream.

What ChatGPT is bad at (and when to use something else)

The model will confidently give you wrong answers. Not rarely — it happens on roughly 15-20% of factual questions that aren't in its training distribution, by my informal measure. "What's the current price of X?" is wrong because it has a knowledge cutoff. "What did the docs say about this API endpoint?" is unreliable because it may be confusing versions. "Debug this production issue" with only a stack trace and no code context is a guess.

For anything where the answer must be accurate and verifiable — legal questions, medical questions, current events, precise technical documentation — don't treat the model's output as a primary source. Use it to draft, summarize, or scaffold, and verify the claims yourself.

The other failure mode is long-context reliability. You can send GPT-4o up to 128,000 tokens of context (about 100,000 words). But attention quality degrades in the middle of very long prompts — a phenomenon researchers call "lost in the middle." If you're doing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), keep individual context chunks short and put the most relevant content at the beginning or end of the prompt, not buried in the middle.

The two-minute integration checklist

Before you ship anything that touches the API in a real app:

  • API key is in an environment variable, not in source code.
  • Spending cap is set in the OpenAI dashboard.
  • Any public-facing endpoint has authentication middleware in front of it.
  • You're validating model output (JSON shape, length bounds) before using it in business logic.
  • You have a fallback — if the API returns a 500 or times out, your app degrades gracefully rather than throwing an uncaught error to the user.

None of this is complicated. All of it bites you if you skip it.
