The short verdict: Work is useful when the output is reviewable
ChatGPT Work is worth adopting when you have a recurring task that pulls from several sources and ends in a file someone can inspect. It is not a magic âdo the businessâ button. It is a planning and execution layer between a goal and a draft deliverable.

Longer, more complex tasks can use more credits because Work is doing more on your behalf. There is no honest flat âcost per reportâ until you define the sources, output, model, and workflow.
A safe workflow for a small team
The best first task is a recurring deliverable that already has a human owner. That gives you a baseline, a reviewer, and an obvious stopping point.
Imagine a B2B SaaS company that prepares a Monday pipeline review. The growth lead wants new CRM activity, Slack decisions, and a spreadsheet of open opportunities turned into an executive-ready update. Work is a reasonable fit because the output is specific, the sources are known, and the lead can review it before anyone acts on it.

It is also not Codex with a different label. Work can expose those process gaps, but it cannot solve them by itself. Start with one weekly output, one reviewer, and one explicit stop condition.
The sharper position is this: ChatGPT Work is a useful operating layer for small teams, but only after the team has named the work. Give it a goal, the right context, and a review gate. Otherwise, the $20 seat is just another place to ask for a longer answer.
