Cline vs Claude Code 2026
Cline vs Claude Code: current plans, light and heavy monthly bills, model choice, editor and cloud support, and the limits that decide which to use.
Published

Cline vs Claude Code is primarily a billing decision: Cline's Open Source plan is free before model usage, while Claude Code is included in the $20 monthly Claude Pro subscription, subject to shared limits. Choose Cline with your own model keys for variable spending and provider choice; choose Claude Code for recurring Claude work that fits a subscription. Both now run beyond their original editor or terminal homes. Cline pricing · Claude pricing.
Cline vs Claude Code: Which Should You Pick?
Pick Cline if you code intermittently, want to choose the model provider, or need a local-model route. Cline is an open-source coding agent: software that reads a repository, edits files and runs commands using a connected AI model. Its bring-your-own-key option, abbreviated BYOK, sends the model bill to your chosen provider. An occasional maintenance session does not require buying a monthly coding subscription. Cline model access.
Pick Claude Code if Claude is already your preferred model family and you want one subscription across coding and the Claude app. Anthropic's coding agent runs in editors, the terminal and the cloud. The subscription buys an allowance with limits, so this recommendation depends on your work fitting that allowance. Claude Code overview.
For a small team, separate the seat decision from the inference decision. Inference is the model's processing work. Cline's public pricing page puts centralized billing and governance in custom-priced Enterprise. Claude Team publishes seat prices. A group that needs shared administration should compare those commercial offerings, rather than multiply “free extension” by its headcount.
Pricing and capabilities were verified against the makers' live pages on 12 October 2026. The verdict uses billing, model choice, execution location and controls. The examples below are calculated budgets, not observed coding sessions or benchmark results.

What Cline's Free Plan Covers
Cline charges nothing for the Open Source software; paid model inference is the running cost. Its pricing page currently names these plans:
- Open Source: Free, for individual developers. The listed features include the VS Code extension, CLI, model inference at cost or BYOK, MCP Marketplace, multi-root workspaces and community support.
- Enterprise: Custom. The page adds the JetBrains extension, centralized billing, team management, provider restrictions, role-based access, single sign-on, service commitments and dedicated support. It marks advanced configuration management and fine-grained permissioning as coming soon. Cline's current plan list.
Free software does not mean a free Claude API account. With your own Anthropic key, Anthropic bills the tokens. With Cline's usage-billing provider, you purchase Cline credits. Local runtimes such as Ollama and LM Studio avoid a per-request cloud-model charge, but you provide the hardware. That distinction makes Cline attractive for occasional use without making every coding session free. Cline authorization and provider options.
ClinePass Adds a Subscription Option
Cline is no longer accurately described as “BYOK only.” Its docs separately offer optional ClinePass at $9.99/month for selected open coding models. It has rolling five-hour, weekly and monthly usage limits. This is a model-access provider alongside the pricing page's Open Source and Enterprise offerings, rather than a required software license. ClinePass documentation.
That option matters if you want Cline's workflow with a subscription for open models. It does not turn the Claude-token examples below into a $9.99 Claude allowance: the documented ClinePass catalog is different.
Category winner: Cline for low-commitment access. The wall is variable inference spending. Choose it because you want control over that spending, not because a free download promises a free workload.
Claude Code Plans and Their Limits
Claude Code is included in paid Claude plans, with usage shared across Claude and Claude Code. The current pricing page lists Free at $0 but marks Claude Code unavailable on that tier. Pro is $20 billed monthly, or the displayed $17/month annual equivalent with $200 billed up front. Max starts at $100/month, with options for 5x or 20x Pro usage. Anthropic pricing.
Anthropic's Claude Code product page supplies the exact Max tier prices: Max 5x is $100/month; Max 20x is $200/month. These are subscription prices with usage limits. Claude Code plan cards.
For organizations, the pricing page currently states:
- Team, for 2 to 150 people: Standard seats are $25/month, or $20 per seat/month billed annually. Premium seats are $125/month, or $100 per seat/month billed annually. Premium offers 5x Standard usage, and seat types can be mixed.
- Enterprise: US$20 per seat/month, billed annually, plus usage at API rates. It is a seat-plus-consumption offering. Team and Enterprise pricing.
At monthly rates, a small team buying two Standard seats pays $50/month before extra usage. One Standard and one Premium seat totals $150/month. Those are arithmetic seat totals, not estimates of how much code the seats produce. Prices exclude applicable tax.
The Allowance Is Shared, and Credits Are Separate
Do not convert Pro or Max into a promised number of monthly tokens. Anthropic describes five-hour and weekly limits, with usable capacity depending on the model, conversation length and task. Claude app activity draws from the same pool as coding. When a limit is reached, paid usage credits can continue work at API rates. How plan limits work.
Max also includes monthly API credits, and Team includes pooled API credits. Those are a separate benefit: Anthropic says they do not cover interactive Claude Code sessions or extra usage after subscription limits. Do not subtract them from the cost of keeping an interactive coding session running. Monthly API credit rules.
Category winner: Claude Code for a known subscription fee, provided the allowance fits. Enterprise and enabled overage billing change that cost model. The Claude Code pricing guide gives the broader plan context.
Monthly Cost: Light and Heavy Users on the Same Token Budget
The same billed tokens cost the same at the same direct API rate, whichever client sends them. Claude Code can use an Anthropic API account as well as a subscription. Choosing Cline does not itself discount Anthropic's model price. Claude Code billing options.
For a reproducible comparison, use Claude Sonnet 4.6, explicitly listed in Cline's model documentation and still listed on Anthropic's pricing page. This is a fixed reference model, not a claim that it is the newest or best option. Its standard direct API price is $3 per million uncached input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, equivalent to $0.003 and $0.015 per 1,000, respectively. Cline model listing · Anthropic token prices.
A token is a unit of text the model processes. Input includes the instructions and context sent to it; output is what it generates. The following are chosen monthly workload assumptions, not maker-stated plan allowances. They use uncached input, standard API billing and no separate paid tools, discounts or taxes. All billed tokens, including any billable reasoning, must be included in the relevant totals.
The calculation is monthly API cost = $3 × input millions + $15 × output millions. The subscription column prices access to attempt the same workload; Anthropic does not publish the token entitlement needed to prove it will finish within those fees. Subscription cost with paid overflow is the plan fee plus metered additional usage.
For the light example, Cline's $6 model bill is below buying Pro solely for coding. For the heavy example, Max 5x would save $20 against the $120 API baseline if that workload fits. Buying Max 20x at $200 would cost more than this particular API workload. Heavy use alone is not a reason to buy the largest subscription.
Model choice can reverse the result too. Anthropic currently prices Claude Sonnet 5.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. At those rates, the same assumed billed-token totals cost $4 for light use and $80 for heavy use, below Max 5x in both cases. These are rate-sensitivity calculations for a provider setup that offers that model, not a claim that different models process identical text into identical token counts. Use the rate of the model you intend to select. Current model rates.
Where the Cheaper Option Flips
At this assumed five-to-one input/output mix, the API bill is $5 per million combined tokens. The spend crossovers are therefore 4 million total tokens against $20 Pro, 20 million against $100 Max 5x, and 40 million against $200 Max 20x. These are calculated price intersections, not subscription capacity claims.

Caching changes the answer. Prompt caching lets repeated context be billed differently from fresh input. Sonnet 4.6's published five-minute cache-write rate is $3.75 per million tokens, while cached reads cost $0.30. A workload dominated by cache hits can cost much less than the uncached line, moving the subscription crossover later. Cache writes, output and any separately charged tools still count. Anthropic caching prices.
Identical tasks also need not produce identical bills. Different agent instructions, file reads, retries and histories can change the billed token totals. This comparison holds those totals constant to isolate pricing; it does not claim equal speed, code quality or token efficiency.
Category winner: Cline BYOK for the light example; Claude Code Max 5x for the heavy example only if it fits. The reliable decision rule is your model bill versus the cheapest subscription that accommodates your work, including interruptions and extra usage.
Where They Run: VS Code, JetBrains, Terminal and Cloud
Both products cover editor, terminal and cloud workflows. Choosing solely on “extension versus CLI” misses their current products. The differences are now the integration route, model access and what carries between environments.
VS Code and JetBrains
Cline suits developers who want provider choice inside Visual Studio Code. Its install docs describe both VS Code and JetBrains plugins. There is a commercial ambiguity worth checking before a team purchase: Cline's pricing page places the JetBrains Extension under Enterprise, while installation docs describe a public marketplace install. The docs also describe a separate Agent Client Protocol, or ACP, route that embeds Cline CLI in JetBrains. Those are distinct routes; the existence of an installation guide does not establish a free entitlement to the Enterprise-listed extension. Cline install paths · Cline ACP · pricing.
Claude Code suits developers who want their Claude account in the editor. Its VS Code extension provides inline diffs and plan review. Its JetBrains plugin provides diff viewing and editor context, but requires the Claude Code CLI to be installed separately. You do not need to abandon your editor to choose Claude Code. Anthropic's platform documentation.
Category winner: Cline for model choice in VS Code; Claude Code for the clearer subscription-based JetBrains purchase. An existing Cline Enterprise agreement or an ACP workflow can change the latter decision.
Cline CLI vs Claude Code
Cline CLI removes the terminal as a deciding advantage by itself. Cline documents interactive terminal work and headless automation, meaning a script can run the agent without an interactive chat interface. Claude Code also edits files and runs commands from its CLI. Choose the terminal agent by provider requirements and billing, rather than assuming only one has a command-line application. Cline CLI · Claude Code CLI overview.
Both makers also document Desktop applications. Cline describes its Desktop app specifically as an open-source app for open-weight models, so the model choices of a VS Code installation should not be assumed to transfer unchanged to every Cline surface. Cline Desktop installation.
Cloud Work Has a Different Configuration Boundary
Claude Code is the stronger choice when the main requirement is moving Claude work between local tools and managed cloud sessions. Its cloud sessions keep working when the laptop closes, count against shared plan usage and have no separate cloud virtual-machine charge. Remote Control is different: it lets another device steer a session still running on your machine. Claude Code cloud documentation.
Cline Cloud Agents also work in a browser, use GitHub repositories in isolated sandboxes and return work on branches and pull requests. Their documented provider choices are ClineFree, ClinePass and Cline usage-billing. The cloud page does not list the arbitrary BYOK setup available locally. More consequentially, rules, skills, MCP servers and connectors are not loaded in Cline cloud sessions. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a way an agent connects to external tools and data. Cline Cloud Agents.

For a team whose local agent depends on repository rules and an internal tool server, that limitation can determine the purchase before token prices do. A browser task that can edit the code is not necessarily running the same configured workflow. Category winner: Claude Code for the integrated Claude cloud workflow; keep Cline local when its custom configuration is essential.
Model Choice and Control: Different Winners
Cline wins on model-provider choice. Its documented routes include Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini and DeepSeek, alongside aggregators and local runtimes. ClinePass adds a selected open-model catalog, with current examples including GLM-5.3, Kimi K3, DeepSeek V4 Pro, MiniMax M3 and Qwen3.8 Max. Availability depends on the chosen provider and surface. Cline provider options · ClinePass models.
Claude Code's supported model configuration centers on Claude. Its current Anthropic API aliases resolve to Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5; Fable is also documented with account and provider conditions. Other deployment routes include Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry. Those routes can resolve aliases to different versions, and choosing a cloud provider is not the same as choosing arbitrary GPT, Gemini or local models. Claude Code model configuration.
For a developer who wants a cheaper model for routine edits and another provider for difficult work, Cline's flexibility is the point. The tradeoff is that the developer owns more provider configuration and must judge each model's results. Judge the resulting diff and tests against your project requirements before standardizing on a model.
Claude Code wins on explicit, shareable permission policies; Cline offers straightforward per-action controls. Cline lets you configure automatic approval separately for file operations, terminal commands, browser use and MCP. Its “safe command” classification uses a model-supplied flag rather than a fixed allowlist. Cline approval controls.
Claude Code documents allow, ask and deny rules enforced by the software, with permission settings that can be shared through version control. Manual, Plan and auto modes change how actions proceed. For a small team that wants the same command policy across developers, this is a concrete reason to prefer it. Claude Code permissions.
Open source describes access to the agent's software. It does not, by itself, mean repository content stays on your computer when you select a cloud model. Choose execution location, model hosting and permissions as separate settings.
Claude Code vs Cline: What Switching Costs
Migration mainly costs configuration work and a change in billing, rather than a rewrite of the repository. Keep the code and rebuild the surrounding instructions, credentials and permissions deliberately.
Preserve the project instructions
Keep build commands, test commands and project conventions in the repository. Cline supports
.clinerules/,.cline/rules/andAGENTS.md; Claude Code usesCLAUDE.mdand also documentsAGENTS.mdsupport with its own loading rules. Review which files load instead of assuming every rule format transfers. Cline rules · Claude Code memory.Choose the billing identity explicitly
In Cline, choose the provider before choosing a model. In Claude Code, distinguish subscription login from an API account. Anthropic warns that an
ANTHROPIC_API_KEYenvironment variable makes Claude Code use API billing instead of subscription usage. A leftover key can change the bill even when you already pay for Pro. Anthropic billing guidance.Rebuild controls for the destination
Review allowed commands, file access and connected tools. Keep local Cline workflows local when they depend on configuration its Cloud Agents do not load. Do not count an old conversation history or a familiar editor panel as evidence that the new agent has the same context.
There is also a documented middle path. Cline can use Claude Code as a provider through an authenticated Claude CLI, using Pro or Max subscription limits. Cline warns that image uploads and prompt caching are limited in this mode and responses may not stream token by token. Treat it as a specific integration with tradeoffs, not as a fresh pool of Claude usage. Cline's Claude Code provider instructions.
Do not switch away from Cline if multiple providers, local models or your current custom workflow are essential. Do not switch away from Claude Code solely to save money when you already pay for Claude and your coding fits the remaining allowance. If neither matches the requirements, the Claude Code alternatives guide broadens the shortlist.
Questions Developers Ask Before Choosing
Is Cline free, including the AI model?
The Open Source software is free. Paid cloud-model usage is separate, through your own key or Cline credits. Cline also documents free-model options and local runtimes; local inference requires your hardware. ClinePass is an optional paid model subscription. Cline pricing · model access.
Is Cline cheaper than Claude Code for occasional coding?
It can be. The stated light workload costs $6 through an Anthropic key, compared with buying a $20 monthly Pro subscription solely for coding. If you already keep Pro and have spare allowance, using Claude Code within it may add no subscription cost. The workload assumptions and rates are shown above.
Can I use my Claude subscription inside Cline?
Cline documents a Claude Code provider that calls an authenticated Claude CLI and uses Pro or Max limits. It also documents limitations for image uploads, caching and streaming. This is distinct from pasting an Anthropic API key into Cline. Cline's provider guide.
Can both tools work in my editor and in the cloud?
Yes. Both document editor integrations and cloud execution. Check the particular route: Claude Code's JetBrains plugin requires its CLI, while Cline's dedicated JetBrains extension appears under Enterprise on its pricing page. Cline Cloud Agents also have a narrower documented configuration scope than local Cline. Claude Code platforms · Cline cloud scope.
Does a Max subscription guarantee the heavy workload will fit?
No such token guarantee is published. The heavy example is a fixed API workload, while subscription limits depend on the model and activity across Claude and Claude Code. Compare the price, then check whether the allowance accommodates your workload; budget separately for enabled extra usage. Anthropic usage explanation.
