Which one should you pick?

Claude is the better default if you cannot name a Gemini-specific reason to switch. Its current Opus 5 model has the stronger independent intelligence result, its paid plan bundles Claude Code, and its product is built around turning a large body of context into a finished document, analysis, or code change.

Gemini is the better choice when the surrounding system matters more than the last increment of model quality. A senior operator who spends the day in Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Meet removes handoffs by choosing Gemini. A product team processing large API volumes gets lower standard token rates. A creative team that needs image output has only one native option here: Gemini.

For a funded founder who wants one assistant for board memos, technical plans, and code review, choose Claude. For a mid-market CTO building a research-heavy internal assistant over Google data, start with Gemini. For a solo technical builder, choose Claude unless API throughput or Google-specific tooling dominates. The decision rule is simple: default to Claude for a deliverable, default to Gemini for an ecosystem or a high-volume pipeline. If the work ends as a memo, codebase change, analysis, or agent-produced file, Claude earns the first trial. If it begins and ends inside Google, requires generated media, or runs often enough that token cost dominates, Gemini earns it.

The developer side is more precise. Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview accepts up to 1M input tokens, can return up to 64k output tokens, and supports structured outputs alongside Google Search grounding, URL context, code execution, and function calling. Separate Gemini image models can generate and edit images.

Gemini's main strength is breadth without a transfer step. Research can begin in Search, pull from Workspace, continue in Notebook, and land in Docs. Its main weakness is lifecycle risk: the flagship API is still labeled Preview, and its input and output prices rise once a prompt exceeds 200k tokens.

Claude Opus 5 is the current model for complex agentic coding and enterprise work. It has a 1M-token context window, 128k maximum output, and five effort settings from low to max. High is the default on the API and Claude Code. Claude Sonnet 5 is the lower-cost production option, with introductory pricing through 31 August 2026.

Claude's main strength is depth at the point of delivery. The model, Code, projects, connectors, and file creation all point toward sustained work that must finish well. Its hard limit is modality: current Claude models accept text and images but output text only. A workflow that must produce images, audio, or video needs another service.

Pricing winner depends on the billing surface

Gemini wins raw API cost, Claude wins a year-long individual commitment, and Google Workspace wins standard team-seat cost. Saying both cost about $20 hides every material difference.

Individual subscriptions: the crossover is month 11

Google AI Pro is $19.99 per month. Claude Pro is $20 monthly, a one-cent difference that should never decide the purchase.

Claude also offers a $200 annual plan. That works out to $16.67 per month. Twelve monthly Google AI Pro payments total $239.88, so Claude saves $39.88 across a full year. The exact crossover is just over 10 months, which means Claude's annual plan becomes the cheaper choice in month 11.

The higher-usage tiers are almost perfectly price matched:

  • Gemini Ultra 5x is $99.99 per month; Claude Max 5x is $100.
  • Gemini Ultra 20x is $199.99 per month; Claude Max 20x is $200.

Those tiers buy capacity and access, not twenty times the business value. Stay at the professional tier until a recurring paid task hits a documented limit often enough to cost more than the upgrade.

Team seats: Google is $720 cheaper per year at ten seats

On annual commitments, Google Workspace Business Standard is $14 per user per month and Claude Team Standard is $20 per seat per month. Ten seats therefore cost $140 per month on Google and $200 on Claude, a $720 annual difference before promotional pricing.

The products are not identical. Google Standard includes business email, Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Meet, and other Workspace apps, plus expanded Gemini access. Claude Team includes Claude Code, Cowork, enterprise search, SSO, connector administration, centralized billing, and no model training on customer content by default.

A Google-native operations team should not pay the Claude premium merely to compare prose styles. An engineering or knowledge-work team should not choose Google solely to save $6 per seat if Claude Code and agentic deliverables are the work.

API tokens: $40 versus $90 for the same 1,000 jobs

For prompts up to 200k tokens, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview costs $0.002 per 1,000 input tokens and $0.012 per 1,000 output tokens. Claude Opus 5 costs $0.005 per 1,000 input tokens and $0.025 per 1,000 output tokens.

Normalize the workload to one task with 8,000 input tokens and 2,000 output tokens:

  • Gemini: 8,000 × $2/M plus 2,000 × $12/M = $0.040 per task.
  • Claude: 8,000 × $5/M plus 2,000 × $25/M = $0.090 per task.
  • Across 1,000 tasks: $40 on Gemini versus $90 on Claude.

Gemini is 55.6% cheaper on this workload. There is no positive raw-token crossover between these two flagship rates under 200k because Gemini is cheaper on both sides of the request. The choice flips only when Claude's higher success rate prevents enough retries, review, or downstream correction to recover the $50 difference per 1,000 jobs. That recovery point must come from your own evaluation set, not a public leaderboard.

Search fees: Google stays cheaper until 17,500 searches

Gemini 3 includes 5,000 Search-grounding prompts per month, shared across the Gemini 3 family, then charges $14 per 1,000 search queries. Claude charges $10 per 1,000 web searches from the first search, plus normal token charges.

Under a simplified one-search, one-query assumption, their tool fees meet at 17,500 searches per month:

  • Google: 12,500 paid queries after the 5,000 free pool × $0.014 = $175.
  • Claude: 17,500 searches × $0.010 = $175.

Google is cheaper below that point. Claude's search fee is cheaper above it. This is a tool-fee crossover, not a total-cost promise: Google may issue multiple queries from one request, and both vendors still charge model tokens.

Image output: Gemini wins by being able to finish the job

Gemini 3.1 Flash Image charges $0.067 for a 1K image on Standard or $0.034 on Batch. A 1,000-image run therefore costs $67 standard or $34 batch, before text and search charges.

Claude has no comparable native price because current Claude models produce text, not images. For a creative pipeline, that is not a small feature gap. It means there is no Claude crossover at any volume: another image model must enter the stack.

Writing and reasoning winner: Claude

Claude wins when the quality of the finished thinking is the product. That includes a strategy memo, an investment brief, a policy analysis, a difficult synthesis across many files, or final prose that must preserve a consistent argument.

The best current numerical evidence comes from Artificial Analysis, not from this site. Its Intelligence Index v4.1 measured Claude Opus 5 at high effort at 59, versus 46 for Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview. Both had a 1M context window.

That result does not mean every Claude answer beats every Gemini answer. It means Opus 5 currently carries the stronger broad capability signal across the measurer's reasoning, knowledge, coding, long-context, and agentic evaluations. For a founder delegating a board memo or a CTO asking for a migration plan with competing constraints, that is the better starting prior.

The cost is time and money. Artificial Analysis measured Gemini at 124 output tokens per second versus Claude at 54, about 2.3 times faster. It measured its blended token price at $1.74/M for Gemini and $3.85/M for Claude under a stated 7:2:1 cache-hit/input/output mix. At high effort, Claude returned the first token sooner in that measurement, 16.08 seconds versus 26.95, but Gemini produced the rest much faster.

For writing, the practical split is sharper than "Claude sounds human." Use Gemini when the difficult stage is finding current material inside Search and Workspace. Use Claude when the difficult stage is deciding what the evidence means and turning it into one coherent artifact. A research-heavy writer may use Gemini first and Claude second, but that is two subscriptions only when the handoff repeats often enough to justify it.

Coding and agents winner: Claude

Claude wins repository work and long-running coding agents; Gemini wins throughput-sensitive generation. Claude Pro includes Claude Code, so the $20 subscription covers both the chat product and the terminal coding workflow. That bundle is difficult to beat for a solo technical builder.

Artificial Analysis measured Claude Opus 5 max at 61 on its Intelligence Index and reported that Opus 5 xhigh with Claude Code jointly led its Coding Agent Index. The same release reached 1,720 Elo on its AA-Briefcase agentic knowledge-work benchmark. These are the measurer's results, not hands-on claims from this article.

The production catch is effort. Opus 5 can spend much more compute at xhigh or max, which raises latency and token usage. A mid-market CTO should reserve that setting for migrations, difficult debugging, architecture changes, or agent runs where a bad decision is expensive. High or Sonnet 5 is the saner default for ordinary engineering work.

Gemini remains credible for fast prototypes, high-volume code generation, and teams already committed to Google's Jules or Antigravity tooling. Its lower token price creates room for retries and parallel candidates. If 1,000 small transformations are reviewed automatically, Gemini's $40 normalized bill is more attractive than Claude's $90. If one autonomous refactor touches a critical repository, Claude's capability lead can be worth more than the token delta.

Research and Google Workspace winner: Gemini

Gemini wins retrieval-heavy research because Google owns more of the path from source to deliverable. Google AI Pro includes higher access to Deep Search, Gemini Notebook, and Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, and other Google apps. The API can combine Search grounding, URL context, code execution, structured output, and function calling.

For a senior operator, fewer context handoffs can matter more than a benchmark gap. A weekly market brief may start with live Search, add internal Drive material, continue in Notebook, and finish in Docs. Gemini keeps that chain inside one account.

Claude is not offline. Its plans include Research, web search, Google Workspace and Slack connections, Microsoft 365, remote connectors, and enterprise search. It can be the better researcher when synthesis is the bottleneck. But when the task begins with "find what changed and pull the related material from our Google estate," Gemini is the direct choice.

The API fee crossover reinforces the split. Google's 5,000-search free pool is meaningful for a modest internal research tool. Above 17,500 monthly searches, Claude's lower per-search tool fee can win before tokens, but Claude's Opus token rate remains higher. Price the full retrieval loop, including queries, retrieved tokens, generation, retries, and citations.

Image and multimodal work winner: Gemini

Gemini wins creative and mixed-media workflows by a category, not by a margin. Gemini 3.1 Flash Image can generate and edit images, while Gemini 3 Pro Image offers a higher-quality output tier. Gemini's broader product bundle also includes video generation and Flow credits.

Current Claude models support image input and vision, but their output modality is text. Claude can analyze a screenshot, explain a chart, review a visual hierarchy, or write a production brief. It cannot natively return the finished image.

For a DTC creative team generating 1,000 square concept images, Gemini 3.1 Flash Image costs $67 on Standard or $34 on Batch at the listed 1K rate. Claude requires a second image service, another API contract, and a handoff. That additional system may be worthwhile when Claude writes the brief or judges the output, but Claude alone cannot complete the workload.

The distinction also answers a common capability question: Claude can understand images, but it cannot replace Gemini's image-generation models.

Team choice follows the system you already run

Gemini wins seat economics and Google-native operations; Claude wins engineering and agentic knowledge-work teams. There is no responsible team verdict without naming the existing system.

Seat economics winner: Gemini

Google Workspace Business Standard costs $14 per user per month on an annual commitment and puts Gemini inside the tools a Google team already uses. Ten seats cost $140 per month. That is a strong call for an agency, operations group, or service business whose work is email, meetings, documents, spreadsheets, and research.

The $14 buys more than AI, including the Workspace suite and storage. That makes a direct seat comparison imperfect, but it also makes Google's value difficult to dismiss. If the company already pays for Workspace, the implementation burden is smaller than adding a separate assistant.

Engineering workflow winner: Claude

Claude Team Standard costs $20 per seat per month annually. The extra $60 per month at ten seats buys Claude Code, Cowork, enterprise search, SSO, centralized administration, connector controls, and no model training on customer content by default.

An engineering organization or a consulting team producing complex deliverables can justify that premium quickly. One accepted repository change or one accurate client artifact can be worth more than the annual $720 seat delta.

Do not choose either consumer plan for governed deployment

A consumer subscription is not an enterprise AI architecture. A regulated mid-market CTO still needs identity, retention, auditability, data boundaries, evaluation, and model routing. Claude Enterprise prices the seat at $20 per month plus API usage. Google Workspace Enterprise is sales-led. Compare those governed surfaces against the actual control requirements, not the consumer homepages.

Switching is easier toward Gemini than away from it

Claude-to-Gemini migration has a supported personal-account path; Gemini-to-Claude migration is mostly manual. This asymmetry is a material switching cost.

Google lets eligible personal accounts import memory and full chat history from Claude. The workflow accepts a Claude export as a ZIP file up to 5 GB, allows up to five ZIP uploads per day, and can take up to one day.

That importer has important coverage gaps. It is unavailable for work, school, and supervised Google accounts. It is also unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Imported and continued chats are stored in Gemini Activity and may be used to improve Google services, including generative model training, so a personal migration is not a substitute for a governed business migration.

Anthropic lets Free, Pro, and Max users export Claude conversations and account data from web or desktop. Download links expire after 24 hours. Anthropic also states that exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account and that personal-account migration is unsupported.

Google also lets users export Gemini Apps data through Takeout. But a data archive is not a project importer. Moving from Gemini to Claude means rebuilding the active context that matters: project instructions, selected source files, memories, Gems, connector permissions, saved workflows, and the prompt patterns people have learned.

  1. Export before canceling

    Download the source account's chat and user data while the subscription and identity are still active. Keep the archive in a controlled location and check whether it contains the conversations and uploads that matter.

  2. Move one live workflow

    Rebuild one recurring job before moving history in bulk. Use the same source pack and acceptance criteria, then compare the finished deliverable, correction time, and total cost.

  3. Recreate controls

    Map projects, memories, connectors, data-retention settings, admin roles, and API keys. A successful chat import does not recreate the operating system around the chat.

  4. Cancel after a full cycle

    Keep both products only through one normal work cycle. Cancel the old subscription once the replacement completes the recurring job without a hidden manual handoff.

Who should not switch? A Google Workspace team should not move to Claude merely because Opus 5 wins a broad benchmark. A Claude Code team should not move to Gemini merely because the API is cheaper. A regulated team should not use the personal Gemini importer for organizational history. And a solo user with months of useful Claude projects should price the manual rebuild before chasing a one-cent monthly difference.
