Grok vs ChatGPT: Which AI Is Actually Better in 2026?

For most people choosing an assistant for work, ChatGPT Plus is the starting pick for research, documents and coding in one subscription. Grok becomes the stronger fit when live X research and Cursor are central to your week. The current Grok vs ChatGPT decision is about the work each plan covers, with Grok 4.7 and GPT-6 replacing the older model comparison.

The verdict first: pick ChatGPT if you want a general work assistant with Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Pick Grok if you will use Grok alongside Cursor and X through The X Subscription. Cursor combines a coding editor with AI agents. These recommendations follow the published features and allowances; neither model wins every task.

Grok vs ChatGPT: what changed

Since October 12, 2026, The X Subscription has been the new offer from SpaceXSI, the name Grok's maker now uses on x.ai. Grok 4.7 launched September 21. OpenAI began the GPT-6 rollout for paid ChatGPT plans on October 7, with Free and Go following October 8. Plans, models and prices below were verified against the makers' pages on October 16, 2026.

The consequence for a buyer: coding no longer settles the choice in ChatGPT's favor by itself. The X offer includes Cursor, while ChatGPT includes Codex. Choose the subscription that supports your recurring work, then choose its allowance.

The one axis that decides

The useful question is where your work happens: in public conversations on X and a coding editor, or across research, files and a general assistant?

Grok's concrete advantage for an X-heavy workflow is its live search across X and the web. A communications lead tracking reactions to a launch has a reason to start there. That access is useful evidence gathering; it does not make a post true or establish that Grok is more accurate on every current-events question.

ChatGPT's case is the combination of file analysis, research and connected tools in its current plan features. For an operator turning source documents into a recommendation, that is a sensible starting point. If you want the wider field, see our Claude vs ChatGPT and Gemini vs ChatGPT breakdowns.

Models and benchmarks, as they actually stand

Grok 4.7 is SpaceXSI's current frontier model for coding and knowledge work. Its developer guide lists it in Cursor on all plans and as Grok Build's default. The same guide gives the API a 500,000-token context window, the amount of material the model can work with at once. That API specification is not a promise about how much you can upload to the consumer chat app.

The X Subscription's pricing page does not name a Chat model version for Free or Plus. Premium advertises access to the latest Grok models, inherited by Super and Ultra. Grok 4.7 is confirmed for coding, but the plan page does not specify which version you get inside Chat.

ChatGPT's Chat experience uses GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go, and GPT-6 Sol on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, subject to workspace settings. OpenAI's release also adds Intelligent UI, responses that can include interactive diagrams or calculators. That release applies to Chat; it did not change the models in Work or Codex. The current pricing grid separately lists GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra access, and Pro reasoning uses Astra. Check the product surface as well as the model name.

The makers' release evaluations do not establish a universal winner for your job. A useful comparison is a recurring brief with a result you can check: a sourced market memo, a spreadsheet explanation or a code change with passing tests. Judge the correction work required, not the most impressive answer in isolation.

Pricing, the real numbers

Choose the plan for its included work, not its name. These are the makers' published US-dollar prices; billing cadence and applicable taxes can affect checkout.

The X Subscription, from SpaceXSI's pricing page:

  • Free: $0/month. Limited Grok chat and agent use; no named Chat model on the plan page.
  • Plus: $8/month. Base allowance, Grok and Cursor access; no named Chat model on the plan page.
  • Premium: $30/month. Latest Grok models, Grok Bot and 4x the Plus allowance.
  • Super: $100/month. Premium's model access, priority at peak times and 15x the Plus allowance.
  • Ultra: $200/month. Inherits Super's model access, with 50x the Plus allowance.

For company seats, the launch announcement confirms the same per-seat prices:

  • Teams Premium: $30/seat/month. Team administration with the Premium tier.
  • Teams Super: $100/seat/month. Team administration with the Super tier.
  • Teams Ultra: $200/seat/month. Team administration with the Ultra tier.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing. Contact sales for organization-specific terms.

Existing SuperGrok subscribers can keep their current plan, price and features, according to the announcement.

The X allowance is shared across Grok and Cursor and refreshes weekly. Third-party models in Cursor are available on Premium and above but billed separately. Grok API access is included with paid plans; API consumption is separately billed and does not draw from that allowance. These distinctions are stated on the pricing page.

ChatGPT, with features checked on chatgpt.com/pricing and dollar amounts confirmed in OpenAI's pricing documentation and Pro tier guide:

  • Free: $0/month. GPT-6 Luna in Chat, with limited tools.
  • Go: $8/month. GPT-6 Luna in Chat, with more tool usage than Free.
  • Plus: $20/month. GPT-6 Sol in Chat and expanded research, Work and Codex access.
  • Pro 100: $100/month. Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra and a larger usage allowance.
  • Pro 200: $200/month. More included usage than Pro 100.
  • Pro 500: $500/month. The largest Pro allowance; includes Ultrafast access.
  • Business: $20/user/month billed annually, or $25/user/month billed monthly. Minimum 2 users; a managed workspace.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing. Contact sales for organization-specific terms.

Pro is a range of plans. A higher personal allowance also does not turn Plus or Pro into a company-managed Business workspace.

For builders, the current Grok 4.7 API starts at $2 input / $6 output per million tokens below 200,000 prompt tokens; at 200,000 or more, the rates are $4 / $12 for the whole request. These standard global API rates are separate from the assistant subscription and exclude additional tool charges.

The takeaway: start with ChatGPT Plus for mixed office work, or The X Subscription's Premium tier when its Grok-and-Cursor combination matches your week. Move up only when your usage record shows the lower allowance is interrupting valuable work.

Coding, search, images, voice

Coding is now a workflow choice. Cursor is part of The X Subscription, and Grok 4.7 runs in Cursor and Grok Build. ChatGPT includes Codex, with Plus access through the web, command line and editor extension. If you already use Cursor, evaluate the new bundle before adding a separate assistant. If you prefer delegating coding tasks through Codex, keep that advantage in the decision. Our best AI coding assistants for 2026 guide covers the wider choice.

Real-time search favors Grok when X is the source you need. For a launch-monitoring brief, ask for original posts and distinguish customer reports from commentary. ChatGPT also has web search; it is not a paid browsing add-on. For either assistant, open the citations before turning a claim into a business recommendation.

Images and voice are available in both products, as the Grok product page and ChatGPT feature grid confirm. There is no verified head-to-head quality result here. Use the same brand brief or spoken task to compare them, including the editing needed to make the output usable.

Agent work needs an allowance check. Grok Bot is a persistent cloud teammate with connectors and routines, described in the Grok documentation; it is included from The X Subscription's Premium tier. ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage under OpenAI's plan rules. A long coding task can compete with other work for your allowance. If agents are your focus, compare the platforms in our best AI agent platforms for 2026 roundup.

For a company purchase, evaluate the workspaces, not a reputation shortcut. X's team offer includes company sign-in, administration and consolidated billing. ChatGPT Business includes a dedicated workspace and no training on business data by default, according to OpenAI. Confirm that the chosen workspace meets your company's data rules before uploading work files.

The decision rule

The upside
What it does well
6 points

  • Your research depends on current X conversations and their original sources.
  • You will use Cursor alongside Grok and benefit from the combined subscription.
  • You prefer its results on your own recurring tasks and can work within the shared allowance.
  • You want a starting point for research, file analysis and everyday office work.
  • Codex already fits your coding workflow.
  • Your company wants the published Business workspace and data controls.

The constraint that flips it: if Cursor and X are central to your work, give The X Subscription a serious look. If they are incidental, start with ChatGPT Plus and upgrade only for a demonstrated limit. For company data, make that choice inside an approved business workspace.

Next week, give each assistant the same recurring task using material you are permitted to share. Record the corrections, missing sources and allowance consumed. Pay for the one that reduces the work you have to finish yourself.

Is Grok better than ChatGPT?

Grok is the stronger fit when native X research and Cursor are central to your workflow. ChatGPT is the starting recommendation for mixed office work and Codex. The current model names alone do not establish a universal winner; compare the results and corrections on a task you repeat at work.

What is the price difference between Grok and ChatGPT?

Both have free and entry paid plans. Compare The X Subscription's Premium tier with ChatGPT Plus for regular work, then consider higher allowances only when needed. The plan-by-plan prices above distinguish personal, team and enterprise offers, and separate assistant subscriptions from API usage.

Is Grok or ChatGPT better for images?

Both offer image generation. There is no verified quality winner in this comparison. Use the same brief to compare instruction following, revisions and the work needed before you can use the image, then check the relevant plan's allowance.
