Is ChatGPT Free? What You Get for $0

Yes. ChatGPT Free costs $0 and includes GPT-6 Luna, with unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse safeguards. Uploads, images, voice, data analysis and deep research have their own limits; paying for Go at $8/month or Plus at $20/month buys more capacity or broader capabilities. Is ChatGPT Free for Work?

Yes, for work that can tolerate tool limits. A founder drafting a supplier email or an employee revising a project brief can start on Free. Repeated file analysis under a deadline is where capacity becomes the buying decision.

Since October 8, 2026, OpenAI has been expanding GPT-6 Luna and Intelligent UI to Free and Go, following its October 7 announcement. Plus uses GPT-6 Sol in Chat. The rollout changes ordinary Chat; it does not change the models powering Work or Codex, and availability can reach accounts gradually. OpenAI's release notes.

For occasional drafting, start at $0. Before paying, identify what is failing: the answer, the amount of material you can include, or a specific tool's allowance. Each points to a different reason to upgrade.

Is GPT-6 Luna free?

Yes. You can use GPT-6 Luna through ChatGPT Free without a paid subscription. Luna is the model behind Free and Go Chat in the current rollout, and both support Intelligent UI. Go charges for additional capacity; it is not required simply to get Luna. Plus changes the Chat model to GPT-6 Sol and adds broader capabilities. OpenAI's Intelligent UI guide.

Free access to Luna in Chat does not mean unlimited use of every tool, unlimited agent work in Codex, or free API calls. Choose the product you intend to use before comparing its limits: asking Luna a question in Chat and having an agent work through a repository are different kinds of usage.

What Does Free Include?

The Free tier FAQ includes web search, file and image uploads, data analysis, image creation and access to existing GPTs, which are customized assistants. The useful distinction is between having a feature and having enough allowance to use it throughout your working day.

The numeric upload rule comes from OpenAI's file-upload guide. Voice has its own plan limits, and deep research has its own usage counter.

A supplier email can stay within ordinary text chat. Uploading a collection of invoices, generating product images and asking for a sourced market report use separate features, so the same Free account can be sufficient for the email and constrained for the rest.

What Intelligent UI adds

Intelligent UI lets Free Chat answer with a useful layout or interactive element when the question benefits from it. Instead of only paragraphs, an answer might include a comparison, chart, form or interactive diagram. ChatGPT chooses the format, and can still give a plain text answer. You can ask for a concise response or a different presentation in the conversation. Intelligent UI guidance.

For example, a comparison can be easier to assess side by side, while a calculation may benefit from controls you can adjust. The interface changes how you explore the answer. It does not grant a fresh allowance for a tool used to produce it: OpenAI says Intelligent UI has no separate usage quota, and existing model, tool and plan limits still apply. For simpler responses on the web, open Settings → Personalization → Layout and Visuals → Simple. Some visual elements can still appear. Intelligent UI is available in Chat, not Work or Voice. What are ChatGPT Free's exact limits?

The published limits cover different things: upload frequency, file size, storage and the amount of information a conversation can handle. Reaching one does not tell you that the others are exhausted.

For uploads, OpenAI currently states:

• 3 file uploads per day on Free. OpenAI may reduce upload limits during peak hours, and failed attempts can sometimes count.
• 512 MB per document or presentation. Text and document files also have a 2 million token cap. Tokens are the small pieces of text the model processes; this is a separate limit from file size.
• Approximately 50 MB per spreadsheet or CSV, depending on row size. The document-token cap does not apply to spreadsheets.
• 20 MB per image. Image upload size and image-generation usage are different limits.
• 5 files per project on Free. A project groups related work. Its file capacity does not replace the daily upload allowance.

Free also includes 500 MB of Library storage for saved files. Library storage is separate from daily attachment and chat limits. Deleting a conversation does not automatically delete a copy saved in Library; manage that copy in Library if storage is the problem. Library storage guidance.

For conversation size, the pricing comparison lists 27K total Instant context and about 12 pages of input on Free. The context window is the amount of information the model can work with at once. Instructions, memory, tools and the response also use that space, so the entire window is not available for your pasted document. The page count is approximate and changes with the features in use.

An accepted file and a conversation's context window are different constraints. A file being small enough to upload does not mean its full contents fit into every response. Give the task a clear scope, such as extracting payment terms from a contract, instead of treating successful upload as a promise that every detail remains in view.

Which limits do not have a fixed published count?

There is no single Free “messages per day” number that describes all of ChatGPT. The current Free FAQ says everyday text chats are unlimited under abuse safeguards, while images, uploads, voice and data analysis have separate limits.

For image generation and data analysis, the current plan pages do not state a universal daily allowance. For Free Live Voice, OpenAI says access to GPT-Live-1 mini is limited and that limits may change. Free also excludes voice with video. Do not schedule a recurring voice or image workflow around a quota those pages do not promise.

Deep research, which combines sources into a documented report, shows remaining tasks in your account. OpenAI's current guide does not publish a fixed task count for each of Free, Go and Plus. Where a plan has a fixed monthly allowance, it resets 30 days from first use. Use ordinary search for a quick lookup and save deep research for a question that needs several sources brought together. What happens when you hit a limit?

Read the notice for the feature that stopped. An exhausted image allowance is not the same thing as exhausted everyday text access. The Free FAQ says ChatGPT notifies you when a limit applies, and a limited tool may require waiting before you can use it again. GPT access also pauses at its applicable limit, with reset timing shown in the product.

For uploads, check both the upload-rate restriction and saved storage. ChatGPT does not currently show how much of the rolling upload-rate quota remains, although storage usage is available in Settings → Storage. How Much Is ChatGPT per Month?

Go is the capacity upgrade; Plus adds GPT-6 Sol and broader work capabilities. The current US monthly prices are:

Prices are from ChatGPT's USD pricing page. Go and Plus are billed monthly; their Help Center pages do not offer annual billing. Local pricing and payment options can differ by country.

What does ChatGPT Go add?

Go makes sense when Luna already answers well, but Free's tool capacity interrupts your work. It expands eligible image generation, file uploads and data analysis, and provides longer memory. Both Free and Go already include unlimited everyday text under abuse safeguards, so ordinary text volume alone is a weak reason to pay. What ChatGPT Go includes.

The concrete capacity differences are:

• 25 files per project, compared with Free's 5, under the file-upload rules.
• 4 GB of Library storage, compared with Free's 500 MB, under the Library limits.
• 3 hours of Live Voice with GPT-Live-1 mini per rolling 24 hours, according to the Voice in Chat table.
• 54K Instant context and about 40 pages of input, under the pricing comparison.

The pricing grid also lists 256K reasoning context and approximately 320 pages of input for Go and Plus. Those are context figures, not a promise of the same reasoning model: Go's access does not become Plus's Sol access merely because a capacity row matches.

For uploads generally, OpenAI publishes a ceiling of up to 80 files every 3 hours, explicitly limits Free to 3 per day, and reserves the ability to lower limits at peak times. Treat that as an upper bound under the upload rules, not a guaranteed Go throughput. The separate shared upload-storage caps are 25 GB per user and 100 GB per organization; they do not replace Go's smaller Library allowance. File-upload limits.

Paid subscriptions also support uploading audio recordings; Free does not. The audio-file maximum is 512 MB, and long recordings can time out during processing. That is a file-upload feature, separate from having a live voice conversation. Audio-upload guidance.

What does ChatGPT Plus add?

Plus is worth considering when the task needs stronger reasoning or broader tools, even if you have not exhausted Free. It adds priority during busy periods, faster replies and expanded access to images, file analysis and deep research. Its limits can still vary with demand. What ChatGPT Plus includes.

In Chat, Plus uses GPT-6 Sol and includes Medium and High thinking levels. Extra High and Pro are not included in Plus Chat. Plus includes 3 hours of GPT-Live-1 Voice per rolling 24 hours. Go has the same stated duration with GPT-Live-1 mini; the Voice model is part of the difference. Neither duration is a limit for uploaded recordings, and Live does not support video or screen sharing. Voice limits.

For saved files, Plus has 20 GB of Library storage and 25 files per project. It also expands Work to desktop, web and mobile and expands Codex usage. A founder assembling a sourced board brief or a builder doing repeated software tasks has a clearer reason to pay than someone who only wants occasional email edits. Do not buy either paid personal plan solely to create a new GPT. OpenAI's current Free FAQ says new GPT creation and publishing are unavailable on personal Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts. Existing GPTs remain usable; editing depends on plan and permissions. GPT availability.

Which plan should you choose?

Stay on Free until a recurring task identifies the reason to pay. Choose Go if the answer quality is sufficient and tool capacity is the bottleneck. Choose Plus if Sol reasoning, expanded research or broader agent access makes the task meaningfully easier to finish.

Plus costs $12 more per month than Go, calculated from the listed $20 and $8 prices. If Go solves the interruption, that difference buys capabilities you may not need. If the work requires Plus's reasoning or access, paying for Go first does not solve it.

Does ChatGPT Free Show Ads?

Ads may appear on Free and Go for eligible users in select regions; Plus has no ads. They can appear below a response, labeled sponsored and visually separate. OpenAI says ads do not influence answers. The test began in the US and excludes the ChatGPT Atlas browser. OpenAI's ads FAQ.

Eligible Free accounts can also choose an Ads-Free experience through Ads controls, but it reduces usage limits and feature access. Some tools, such as image generation or deep research, may become unavailable. That option removes ads without paying; it does not give you Plus's allowances.

Is ChatGPT API Free?

ChatGPT Free does not include free API usage, and neither Go nor Plus pays your API bill. The API lets your software call OpenAI models. Its billing is separate from ChatGPT and depends on the models, tokens and applicable tools or storage used. Is Luna access the same in Work and Codex?

Work and Codex follow their own access and usage rules. Work is an agent for longer tasks and finished deliverables; Codex focuses on software development. In Codex, signing in with ChatGPT uses your plan's usage and billing; using your own API key uses API billing. Check the allowance for the product and sign-in method you are using before starting a long task.

Luna Reserve is also separate from Free Chat. It is a limited fallback offered to selected personal Plus and Pro accounts in Work and Codex after regular usage runs out. It is not available to every account and does not add API credits. Is ChatGPT still free? How long can I use ChatGPT for free?

Yes. Free remains available at $0, and OpenAI says there is no set time limit. It is a free plan rather than a trial with a stated expiry. Tool allowances still apply.

Is ChatGPT Plus free?

No. The standard Plus subscription is $20/month. Free is a separate plan, and GPT-6 Luna access in Free does not require Plus.

Can I use ChatGPT without an account?
