Manus is worth $20 a month when its multi-step research, browser, slide, or prototype jobs produce at least four accepted outputs worth $5 each. It is a poor default chatbot, and affected accounts should not treat it as a system of record until Manus's August 23 to 25 data transition is complete.

What Manus actually is

Manus is a delegation layer for digital work: you give it an outcome, it plans the job, operates browsers and cloud computers, writes or runs code, and returns an artifact for you to inspect. That makes it closer to a junior operator with a browser and a virtual machine than to a chat assistant waiting for the next message. The distinction matters because Manus charges for active execution, not for a familiar chat subscription, and its value depends on whether the finished file, research set, slide deck, or working prototype survives review. The product, limits, and prices below were verified against Manus's live pages on August 17, 2026; no hands-on test is claimed.

Who Manus is for, and who should skip it

Manus fits people who can define a bounded job and judge the output without watching every intermediate click. The sweet spot is not "do my work." It is "collect these sources, use these constraints, produce this file, and stop for approval before anything irreversible."

Funded founders should consider Manus for a repeated research or prototyping queue where speed matters and someone owns acceptance. A founder comparing 80 prospects, for example, can define the fields, require a source URL for every claim, ask for a CSV and a one-page decision memo, then review a sample before accepting the set. That is a real delegation unit. "Research my market" is not.

Senior operators are another good fit. An operations lead can turn a weekly vendor check into a scheduled job, but only after separating read-only collection from actions such as sending messages, changing records, or purchasing. The output should land in a review queue with a named owner. Manus can compress the collection work; it cannot own the business consequence.

Small product teams can use it for research, internal prototypes, and first-draft decks. The Manus Team page says Team adds pooled credits, shared spaces, projects, skills and instructions, admin controls, and connections to Google Calendar, GitHub, Notion, and Slack. That setup becomes useful when the prompt, evidence, and review notes need to outlive one employee's personal account.

Skip Manus for everyday questions and iterative thinking. ChatGPT's current pricing page lists Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, and expanded memory on Plus at $20 per month. If your work is mostly conversation, drafting, and repeated back-and-forth, that predictable workspace is the cleaner buy.

Skip Manus for document-heavy analysis that does not need browser or VM execution. Claude Pro is $20 monthly or $200 annually and includes Research, Claude Code, and Cowork. If the job begins and ends with a document set, paying an execution agent to operate a virtual computer adds cost without adding much value.

Skip every autonomous agent when nobody can verify the result. A mid-market CTO should not send an agent into a finance, HR, security, or customer system merely because it can click. The minimum operating model is a bounded scope, least-privilege access, retained source evidence, and a human who can reject the output. Without those four controls, the faster tool only creates faster uncertainty.

Wide Research: the best reason to buy Manus

Manus Wide Research is the clearest expression of what an execution agent adds: it can split one large research brief into many parallel assignments and synthesize the results. Manus says each subagent receives its own virtual machine, tools, internet access, and fresh context, while a central process coordinates the work. The subagents do not communicate directly.

The useful workflow is not "find everything." It is a schema-driven comparison with evidence requirements. Suppose a strategy lead needs a competitive scan of 60 vendors before a planning meeting. The job becomes dependable only when the brief says what each row must contain and how missing evidence should be handled.

  1. Define the evidence contract

    List the exact fields: company, product, buyer, current price, source URL, source date, and one direct limitation. Tell Manus to mark a field unknown rather than infer it, and require first-party sources for pricing and product claims.

  2. Run a small sample first

    Ask for five completed rows before releasing the rest of the batch. Check whether the sources open, the dates are current, and the comparison criteria mean the same thing across rows. Fix the schema now, not after 60 inconsistent profiles arrive.

  3. Parallelize the bounded set

    Release the remaining list only after the sample passes. Wide Research can then assign independent slices to separate subagents and return the table plus a synthesis of repeated patterns.

  4. Audit claims, not prose

    Review the highest-impact claims against their source pages, spot-check the long tail, and reject rows without traceable evidence. Keep the raw table even if the final deliverable is a narrative memo.

Manus publishes examples involving 100 sneaker models, 250 NeurIPS researchers, competitive profiles, and 20 generated images. Those are vendor examples, not independent results from this review, but they show the intended pattern: many similar subtasks with a common schema.

The advantage is breadth under one brief. The failure mode is quiet inconsistency. Because the subagents have fresh contexts and do not talk to each other, two agents can interpret a vague field differently. The central synthesis can make that inconsistency read smoothly without fixing it. A controlled vocabulary, a pilot batch, and source-level sampling are not optional process overhead; they are what turns parallel output into usable evidence.

Browser Operator: useful because it can use your logged-in context

Manus Browser Operator matters when the information sits behind a login that a cloud-only agent cannot reach. The feature page says it works through your browser context and local IP, can use existing sessions and open tabs, and can click, scroll, fill forms, navigate, and extract data after you grant access.

Consider a senior operator reconciling a set of ecommerce returns. The useful version of the job is read-heavy and action-light: open the authorized order portal, find ten order numbers from a supplied list, capture status, amount, and last event, then return a CSV with direct links. Do not let the first run issue refunds, contact customers, or change order state.

  1. Constrain the surface

    Open only the required portal and records. Grant the My Browser connector for this task, and avoid unrelated tabs containing personal, financial, or customer information.

  2. Separate reading from acting

    Ask Manus to collect fields and draft recommended next actions. Require it to stop before submitting forms, sending messages, changing permissions, placing orders, or triggering refunds.

  3. Verify the evidence

    Check a sample against the portal, then compare totals and exceptions. A source link or order number is more valuable than a polished explanation with no trail.

  4. Revoke when the job ends

    Disable the My Browser connector or uninstall the extension if the workflow is not recurring. Least privilege includes duration, not just which pages the agent may open.

This capability is genuinely more useful than copying ten screens into a chatbot. It is also a larger trust decision. Manus's privacy policy says Browser Operator can process content from premium and authenticated pages, browser actions, and session context, and that the collected data is transmitted to Manus servers for task processing. Manus says it does not store login credentials, but "uses your local browser" does not mean the page content stays local.

The right boundary is simple: let Browser Operator retrieve and prepare; keep consequential actions behind approval. If your security policy does not allow authenticated page content to leave the browser for third-party processing, this feature is disqualified regardless of how much time it saves.

Webapp: fast prototype generation with a second bill attached

Manus Webapp turns a conversational specification into a hosted full-stack application. The public Webapp page lists a built-in database and backend, code export, custom domains, version rollback, visual editing, share permissions, Stripe sandbox integration, analytics, leads, and notifications.

The sensible workflow is a narrow internal tool, not an unreviewed public product. Imagine a 12-person services company that needs a lead-intake dashboard. The first version has one form, five required fields, three statuses, an owner, a due date, and a weekly export. That scope is small enough to inspect and useful enough to expose whether the generated application handles data and permissions correctly.

Start with the data model and roles before visual polish. Specify who can create, read, edit, and export each record. Use synthetic data. Check empty states, duplicate submissions, invalid dates, access between users, export correctness, and what happens after a rollback. Export the code before relying on the hosted result, then have a qualified builder review authentication, authorization, secrets, error handling, dependencies, and data retention.

The hidden decision is billing. Manus's WebDev billing article says subscription credits cover building, research, and creation, while a separate pay-as-you-go WebDev Usage Balance covers hosting, database use, live AI and integrations, and API calls made by the deployed app. Your subscription therefore does not cap the operating cost of a live product.

That split is reasonable infrastructure economics, but it changes the verdict. Manus can be a fast way to reach an inspectable prototype. It is not a fixed-price substitute for production engineering. A prototype becomes production only after someone owns security review, test coverage, observability, backups, incident response, and the runtime bill.

Slides: good for a structured first draft, not the final argument

Manus Slides is useful when the source material already contains a clear argument and the bottleneck is turning it into a coherent first deck. The Slides page accepts a topic, audience, key messages, or an imported template, and supports PPTX, PDF, and Google Slides export through Drive or OneDrive.

A board update is a good test because the content has an accountable owner. Give Manus the approved metrics, the prior template, the three decisions needed, and the evidence behind every claim. Ask for a slide outline before generation: title, operating result, drivers, risks, decisions, and appendix. Reject the outline if it tells a chronological story instead of a decision story.

The public page says presentations default to 8 to 12 slides, and its FAQ says the standard limit is 12 slides per presentation unless a Pro or Team upgrade enables longer decks. That is enough for a focused update. It is not a license to bury a weak argument in 30 generated slides.

After export, verify every number against the source workbook, replace decorative charts with decision-relevant ones, check contrast and text size, and remove any visual that implies precision the data does not support. The generated deck should save layout and assembly time. The executive claim, evidence hierarchy, and final edit still belong to the person presenting it.

Manus pricing begins at $0 for Free and $20 per month for 4,000 Pro credits, but the public configuration exposes a much larger allocation ladder than the three cards most buyers see first. The live pricing page, membership help page, and public exchange configuration were checked on August 17, 2026. Free costs $0. The current credit rules cap daily-refresh credits at 1,500 per month and restrict them to Manus 1.6 Lite. A temporary campaign expands free access to Manus 1.6 Lite and 1.6, subject to a daily allowance and fair use, through August 25, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. SGT; Manus 1.6 Max remains excluded. Treat that campaign as evaluation capacity, not a permanent plan promise.

The paid ladder below is exact from Manus's live public configuration. Annual prices prepay ten monthly stickers for 12 months of access, but credits still refresh monthly. Team mirrors the same allocation and price per seat through the $5,000 monthly rung and pools the credits; the $10,000 and $20,000 monthly rungs appear only in the Pro list.

Pro includes Manus 1.6 Max, 1.6, and Lite, advanced research, websites, slides, Wide Research beta, and limits of 20 concurrent tasks and 20 scheduled tasks. Team starts at the same $20 per-seat rung and adds pooled credits, SSO, training opt-out, analytics, access controls, and shared templates.

The cost that matters is per accepted outcome

The $20 tier works out to $0.005 per included credit. The $40, $100, and $200 rungs keep the same rate. The $300 tier improves slightly to about $0.00476 per credit, so the lower tiers are mainly larger prepaid allowances, not dramatic volume discounts.

Credits are not outcomes. Manus says consumption depends on LLM tokens, virtual machines, third-party APIs, task complexity, and duration. It does not publish a reliable conversion from 4,000 credits to a fixed number of research reports, apps, or decks. A task that goes long can use more than a neat prompt estimate, and a final action can take the balance slightly negative. New tasks then stop until the balance refreshes.

Use outcome accounting instead. If the $20 plan produces four deliverables you accept and use, the subscription cost is $5 per accepted outcome. At ten accepted outcomes it is $2. If your time is worth an assumed $50 per hour, the plan breaks even after 24 minutes of accepted time savings in a month. The assumption is deliberately visible: change the hourly value and accepted-output count to match your work.

The annual $200 option for the starter allocation equals $16.67 per month and saves $40 against 12 monthly payments. It only beats monthly billing after ten paid months, and unused subscription credits still clear at each monthly refresh. Do not prepay because the annual sticker looks cheaper. Prepay after your accepted-output log shows steady demand.

Add-ons and adjacent charges

Add-on credit packs cost $20 for 2,000 credits, $100 for 10,000, $200 for 20,000, $500 for 50,000, and $1,000 for 100,000. That is $0.01 per added credit, twice the included-credit rate on the common paid tiers. Add-on credits can carry forward only while a paid subscription remains active.

Auto top-up begins at the $200 tier. The live configuration sets the trigger at 300 remaining credits and the rate at 150 credits per $1. That equals about $0.00667 per credit, cheaper than an add-on pack but still more than the $0.005 included rate on the lower paid tiers.

Cloud Computer is another optional bill. Basic costs $10 for 2 vCPU, 1 GB memory, 35 GB storage, and 200 GB outbound traffic. Standard costs $30 for 2 vCPU, 4 GB memory, 70 GB storage, and 500 GB outbound. Advanced costs $50 for 2 vCPU, 8 GB memory, 120 GB storage, and 1,000 GB outbound. Deployed Webapps can add usage-based hosting, database, AI, integration, and API costs on top.

The real limitations

Manus has six limitations that materially change the buying decision. None is solved by writing a longer prompt.

1. Credit burn is variable, while unused monthly credits disappear

Manus bases consumption on tokens, virtual machines, third-party APIs, complexity, and duration. That is a rational cost model for an agent doing heterogeneous work, but it makes budgeting harder than a flat chat plan. The interface can show consumption after the work; it cannot promise that a research job and a similarly worded follow-up will cost the same.

Monthly subscription credits do not roll over, including on annual plans. Add-ons carry only while the paid subscription stays active. The result is a two-sided risk: heavy jobs can empty the balance early, while quiet months erase unused capacity. The only defensible forecast comes from your own accepted jobs, not from a generic tasks-per-month estimate.

2. Manus's live configuration and help documentation disagree

The public exchange configuration on August 17 reports Free limits of three concurrent sessions, 20 scheduled tasks, and 1,500 free-refresh credits. The membership help article, dated March 16, says one concurrent task, two scheduled tasks, and 300 daily credits.

The live product configuration is the stronger current signal, but a buyer should not have to reconcile this. The mismatch makes static plan summaries fragile. Verify the limits shown inside your signed-in account before designing a workflow around concurrency or schedules, and save a screenshot if the limit affects a purchase decision.

3. A generated Webapp creates an uncapped second cost surface

Subscription credits cover building. WebDev Usage Balance covers the deployed application's hosting, database, live AI and integrations, and API calls. A successful prototype can therefore become more expensive as real users arrive, even if the Manus subscription never changes.

That is the same basic economics as cloud software, but the conversational build experience can hide the handoff between prototype cost and operating cost. Set usage alerts, define an owner, and know how to export or shut down the app before launch. If nobody can review the generated code or respond to a billing spike, keep the project at prototype stage.

4. Browser Operator is not a local-only privacy mode

Browser Operator uses your local browser, IP, sessions, and tabs, but Manus's privacy policy says authorized authenticated content and actions are transmitted to Manus servers for task processing. Inputs may also be sent to third-party AI providers when needed. Manus says it does not store login credentials, which reduces one risk but does not erase the content-transfer decision.

The policy also says browser sandbox data can remain for up to seven days on Free and 14 days on paid plans unless reset sooner. Do not expose health, financial, personnel, privileged legal, or customer data merely because the browser session already has access. Use a low-privilege account, narrow tabs, read-only tasks, and connector revocation.

5. The August separation creates an immediate data-continuity risk for affected users

Manus announced on August 11 that it will soon return to independent operations as part of a separation from Meta. Certain affected users must back up data generated on or after Meta's December 29, 2025 acquisition. The deadline is 7:59 a.m. SGT on August 23, deletion runs from 8:00 a.m. August 23 through August 24, and restoration opens at 8:00 a.m. SGT on August 25. Affected users are expected to lose access for two days.

Manus says unaffected users can continue normally and that this is not a security incident. That distinction does not remove the operational risk for an affected account. Check email and in-app notices now, use the backup tool if instructed, back up again after creating new task data, and do not make Manus the only copy of an important artifact during the transition. This is a time-sensitive operational limit, not a historical footnote.

6. Parallel work can scale ambiguity as quickly as effort

Wide Research subagents operate with fresh contexts and do not communicate directly. That design enables parallelism, but it also means a vague definition can fork into many internally consistent interpretations. The final synthesis can smooth over the seams and make the result look more coherent than the evidence set really is.

The control is procedural: one schema, one pilot batch, explicit source requirements, and a rejection rule. If you cannot describe acceptance before the job starts, you cannot meaningfully judge whether autonomy helped.

Verdict: use a four-job acceptance test

Manus earns a subscription when four representative jobs survive review and together are worth more than $20. Pick one research job, one logged-in retrieval job, one deliverable such as a deck, and one prototype. Define acceptance before each run. Record credits used, human review time, corrections, and whether the output was used.

Pay for Manus if the four outputs are accepted, the combined value clears $20 by a comfortable margin, one person owns review, and the account has no unresolved transition warning. Stay on Free if the outputs are useful but demand is irregular. Choose ChatGPT when the work is mostly conversational and iterative. Choose Claude when the center of gravity is document analysis, writing, or code without cross-tool execution. Build or buy a fixed workflow when the action is repetitive, regulated, or consequential enough to require deterministic controls.

The Monday move is straightforward: check the account for an August transition notice, back up if affected, choose four bounded jobs, and measure accepted outcomes rather than impressive-looking runs. Do not annualize, buy add-on credits, connect sensitive systems, or launch a Webapp until those four jobs pass.

For teams, add one more gate. The reviewer, access policy, source retention, and incident owner must be named before Team's pooled credits and shared workspaces become useful. Manus's Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type I and II, ISO 27001, and ISO 27701, while the Team page says Team and Enterprise data is not used for model training. Those controls support diligence; they do not replace your own data classification and approval rules.
