Reelback AI Video Search: What It Is
Reelback is a pre-edit logging and retrieval layer for footage a production supplies. It is meant to sit beside Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro, giving a producer one place to search dialogue, people, and scenes before sending timecoded selects to the editor. It is not the edit itself, a client approval system, or a digital asset manager that owns rights, lifecycle, and storage governance. That narrow boundary is the reason to consider it, and the reason to skip it when the underlying problem is larger than finding moments. Reelback states the same boundary plainly on its live site.

Who Reelback Is For, and Who Should Skip It
Reelback is best suited to an interview-heavy documentary, reality production, branded-content studio, or recurring corporate-video operation where producers make selects before editors build sequences. Face search matters most when the same subjects recur across shoot days or projects. Dialogue and semantic search matter most when someone remembers an idea but not the exact sentence. Structured export matters most when the person searching is not the person cutting.
The shortlist should be based on where the footage and the edit already live. The prices and capabilities below were checked against each vendor's live pages on September 7, 2026.
Those are not equivalent subscriptions. Reelback charges primarily around processed footage volume. Premiere is an editor with search built into the editor loop. Iconik is a media operations system whose users, storage, AI, and services can all consume budget. Stay with Adobe Premiere when the search ends in the same project
Adobe Premiere is the cleaner choice when one editor already has the relevant media in an active Premiere project. Its Media Intelligence panel searches visual descriptions, spoken words, text, and embedded metadata, and the result is already inside the application where the timeline lives. Adobe lists Premiere at US$22.99 per month on the individual annual plan billed monthly, with a free trial.

Premiere also gives privacy-sensitive teams a materially different data boundary. Adobe says the footage, analysis data, and searches stay on the computer. The tradeoff is scope: it is tied to the Premiere environment, visual queries are currently English-only, and Adobe warns that small details or fast motion can be missed because the model analyzes smaller still-image representations of the footage.
Choose Premiere when the shortest path from result to timeline matters more than a separate producer-facing library. Choose Reelback only if its cross-project retrieval, named faces, and producer workflow clear the paid pilot.
Move to Iconik when search is only one part of the problem
Iconik is the more appropriate shortlist entry when footage spans storage locations, reviewers, permission levels, proxy workflows, and multiple applications. Starter includes review, on-premises and cloud storage connections, metadata and visual search, integrations, role-based permissions, and MFA. That is a different operating system for media, not a search utility with extra folders.

Iconik's live pricing lists Starter roles at $0 per month for Collaborator, $9 for Browse User, $65 for Standard User, and $120 for Power User. Storage, users, AI, and services also consume credits. Professional and Enterprise are custom-priced. This can cost more and take more design work than Reelback, but it is the appropriate answer when rights, roles, review status, retention policy, and connected storage are the actual blockers.
Skip Reelback for Iconik if a search result is not useful until ten people can see the right proxy, the wrong person cannot see the source, review state is preserved, and an original can be conformed across storage. A dedicated search layer should not be asked to impersonate that system.
What the Public Evidence Proves, and What It Does Not
Reelback's public evidence proves that the proposed interface has the right production objects, but not that its model finds them reliably. The homepage displays the fixed semantic query "the part where she talks about leaving her hometown" above three named sample files, each presented with a timecode and a match percentage. The features page displays five sample clips, transcript lines with source timecodes, and named people in a workspace-like view.

That is useful interface evidence. A buyer can see the expected result unit: source clip, moment, preview context, and a route to a select. It also shows that Reelback is thinking in footage and timecode rather than returning a prose answer detached from the source.
It is not retrieval evidence in the experimental sense. The public pages do not expose a search field that lets an independent visitor change the query, repeat it, or ask for a known non-match. The displayed sample cannot reveal how often the expected clip appears first, how similar faces are separated, whether a paraphrase retrieves the intended passage, or whether silent footage is indexed deeply enough to find a specific action.
The same boundary applies to export. Reelback's pages name EDL, FCPXML, and CSV, but the homepage, features page, and pilot page did not expose a downloadable sample in those formats during this verification. Reelback's transcript workflow claims two different retrieval modes: full-text search for literal words and semantic search for contextual similarity. They solve different failures. Exact search answers, "Where was this sentence said?" Semantic search answers, "Where did someone express this idea?" A system can be excellent at the first and weak at the second.
Start with an exact sentence long enough to be distinctive. Record whether the expected source ranks first, whether the seek point lands before or after the first word, and whether duplicate exports crowd the result. Then paraphrase the idea without retaining its unusual nouns or verbs. Keep the expected source and timecode unchanged. Record its rank, the useful context around the hit, and every plausible but wrong result shown above it.
Do not combine those observations into one accuracy score. A documentary producer who remembers quotations needs literal recall. A story producer who remembers themes needs semantic recall. The purchase can pass one job and fail the other.
Similar faces expose the cost of a confident mistake
Reelback's face-search proposition is strongest where the same people recur across many clips, but similarity is where a face index earns scrutiny. The vendor says it detects people automatically, matches and deduplicates them across projects, and supports a named talent roster. Those are claims to exercise, not results to repeat.

Choose two people in the pilot footage who are easy for a hurried logger to confuse: similar hair, age, clothing, lighting, angle, or screen size. Record ground-truth appearances for each. Name both identities, search them independently, and inspect more than the first thumbnail. Log false positives by source and timecode, including short background appearances.
The pass rule should match the consequence. One mistaken identity may be tolerable in an internal B-roll hunt if every result is reviewed. It may be unacceptable in sensitive documentary, employee, or legal material. The software's confidence display does not set that risk threshold. The production does.
Silent B-roll and a deliberate no-match test the searcher's trust
Reelback says scene descriptions can be searched, and its own footage-search material presents visual tagging as the answer for shots with no usable dialogue. This is where a transcript-first product has to prove that "visual" means more than people and broad scene labels.

Pick silent B-roll with one specific action and one composition cue, such as a subject entering rather than standing, or a wide exterior rather than a close detail. Record the exact source range. Search first with the action and setting, then add the composition. If only broad object words work, the tool may still help, but it has not proven the richer semantic retrieval the workflow needs.
Finish with something absent from all five hours. A trustworthy no-match is an operational feature: it stops a producer from sending the editor on a false trail. Record whether Reelback returns nothing, marks low confidence, or fills the page with superficially related footage. Do not score an attractive wrong answer as partial success.

The final retrieval score should preserve the raw evidence: query, expected source, expected timecode, returned rank, seek offset, false positives reviewed, and a short pass or fail reason. A single percentage hides which job failed.
Reelback NLE Export: A Select Is Not Useful Until It Relinks
Reelback's NLE handoff is the decisive capability because a search result still costs editor time until it becomes a usable sequence or source reference. Reelback says it exports EDL for Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, FCPXML for Final Cut Pro, and CSV for spreadsheet or custom workflows. It also says in/out ranges can come from search results or transcript selections.

An EDL, or edit decision list, is a compact set of source references and time ranges. FCPXML is a richer XML interchange format for Final Cut Pro workflows. CSV is useful for logs and custom processing, but it is not proof that an editor gets a working sequence. The only meaningful export test happens in the target editorial environment against the intended media.
Have the producer select at least one result from each successful retrieval test. Export the format Reelback recommends for the production's exact NLE. Then have the editor, not the producer and not the vendor, perform this handoff:
- Import into a clean test project.
- Relink to the intended camera originals or approved proxies, not a convenient duplicate.
- Compare clip name, source timecode, frame rate, start point, end point, and handles with the sealed answer key.
- Move or remount the media path if that mirrors the normal production setup, then relink again.
- Save, close, and reopen the project before calling the handoff complete.
Reelback claims frame-accurate in/out points and direct import into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro. This review did not generate an export, import one, or measure an offset. That vendor claim should remain labeled until the pilot produces a file the editor can inspect.
Ask Reelback for the export details that determine conform reliability: the EDL flavor, reel-name mapping, duplicate-filename behavior, drop-frame treatment, mixed-frame-rate handling, proxy-to-original mapping, and whether a transcript selection carries configurable handles. These are procurement questions, not accusations. A clean answer reduces the number of edge cases the paid pilot has to discover.
Reelback Pricing: Every Current Tier and the Crossover Points
Reelback pricing is simple at the card level and less simple once processed hours cross a plan boundary. The live pricing page, verified September 7, 2026, lists three monthly subscriptions and one paid pilot. Every subscription includes unlimited search queries, face detection, transcription, and NLE export.

Starter: $199 per month
Starter includes 5 processed video hours per month, 3 seats, semantic search, transcription, face detection, and NLE export. Excess footage costs $30 per hour. At the full included allowance, the base price is $39.80 per processed footage hour.
Starter fits a small, controlled stream of interview footage. It becomes a poor default when ingest regularly approaches the high teens because its overage rate erases the apparent gap to Pro.
Pro: $599 per month
Pro includes 25 processed video hours per month and 10 seats, plus zero-storage mode, folders and organization, priority processing, and everything in Starter. Excess footage costs $20 per hour. At full allowance, the base price is $23.96 per processed footage hour.
Pro is the practical production tier if raw source deletion after processing is required, because zero-storage mode is not listed on Starter. It also creates a new governance obligation: retained transcripts, face data, metadata, and the search index still need a deletion and access policy.
Studio: $1,499 per month
Studio includes 75 processed video hours per month, unlimited seats, a dedicated processing queue, multi-project organization, priority support, and everything in Pro. Excess footage costs $15 per hour. At full allowance, the base price rounds to $19.99 per processed footage hour.
Studio should be justified by a representative busy month, not the average month. Unlimited seats help only if more people should use the index. A dedicated queue helps only if processing order affects delivery. Neither benefit compensates for a retrieval or relink failure.
The plan crossover math
At the published rates, Starter base reaches Pro base at about 18.33 total processed hours: $199 plus about 13.33 overage hours at $30 is about $599. The site does not state whether overage is prorated or rounded, so confirm billing granularity before using that decimal as a budget promise.
Pro base plus 45 overage hours reaches Studio base at 70 total processed hours: $599 + (45 x $20) = $1,499. Above that point, Studio becomes cheaper on the stated processing line before taxes or any unstated charges, while also adding seats and queue features.
The pricing page also offers an annual toggle, but the static fact-lock record does not expose the contract details. Do not choose annual billing until the paid pilot passes and the written order confirms cadence, cancellation, overage granularity, data deletion, and support scope. The useful comparison is not cheapest nominal hour. It is cost per correctly retrieved and relinked select.
Reelback Paid Pilot: Spend the $99 on Evidence
Reelback charges $99 once for pilot access covering up to 5 hours of the buyer's footage, including face detection, automated transcription, semantic search, and NLE export. Reelback says the fee is credited toward the first subscription month if the buyer continues. Using all 5 hours makes the pilot price $19.80 per processed footage hour before any credit.

That is a reasonable decision cost only if the corpus and pass rule are designed before payment. Five random hours can make the product look busy without answering the production question. Five chosen hours can expose the exact retrieval, identity, no-match, relink, and retention failures that matter.
Prepare one five-hour corpus
Use footage the team has the right to process. Include dialogue with a known exact line, the same passage for a paraphrase, two visually similar people, a silent B-roll range, duplicate filenames or proxy/original pairs if those exist in normal work, and enough irrelevant footage to make retrieval meaningful. Stay within the vendor's published maximum of 100GB per file and confirm the exact camera format before upload.
Seal the answer key
Before Reelback sees the files, record the expected source filename, source timecode or range, person, query wording, and intended NLE. Write the pass threshold for rank, false positives, seek offset, no-match behavior, and export relink. Do not revise the threshold after seeing results.
Run the five searches in order
Run exact dialogue, paraphrase, Person A, Person B, silent B-roll, and the deliberate no-match. The two person queries belong to one face-separation test. Save the result order, displayed confidence, preview context, seek point, and false positives. A vendor may help with setup, but the producer should enter the final queries without coaching.
Give the export to the editor
Build selects from the returned moments, export the intended EDL or FCPXML, and send only the file plus the sealed answer key to the editor. The editor imports into a clean project, relinks the intended media, checks ranges and handles, then saves, closes, and reopens the project. Record manual repairs as failures or costs, not invisible setup.
Close the data loop
Ask Reelback to state what is deleted when raw source is removed, what remains, how long the search index, transcript, face data, query history, and proxies remain, who can delete each object, and what proof of deletion is available. Finish with a one-page pass or fail memo tied to the threshold and the smallest viable plan.
No successful pilot is claimed here. The exact-dialogue, paraphrase, similar-face, silent B-roll, no-match, export, relink, and deletion checks above remain unavailable until someone pays for and runs them on authorized footage. That limitation is the point of the protocol: it keeps an unavailable test from turning into implied proof.
The Limitations That Decide the Purchase
Reelback has a coherent product shape, but six limitations are material enough to block an annual commitment until they are resolved in writing or in the paid pilot.
Public proof stops before accuracy and relinking
Reelback shows the structure of a plausible result and names concrete interchange formats. It does not provide an independently repeatable public search, a downloadable export sample, published retrieval evaluation, or public relink artifact. The words "instant," "precise," and "frame-accurate" on a product page remain vendor claims until measured on the buyer's footage.
Zero-storage mode does not mean zero retained data
Reelback says default raw footage is stored in AWS S3 for playback and re-processing. In zero-storage mode, available on Pro and Studio, the source video is deleted after processing while the search index, transcripts, face data, metadata, and search capability remain. That can reduce raw-media exposure, but it is not equivalent to deleting the production's derived data.

The public zero-storage wording does not state a retention duration or deletion procedure for those retained derivatives. A face index can be more sensitive than a proxy to some productions because it organizes appearances by identity. Require answers for retention, access, correction, export, deletion, backup expiry, and proof of deletion before processing employee, documentary-subject, minor, medical, legal, or unreleased commercial footage.
Reelback also says footage is encrypted in transit and at rest, organization data is isolated, and biometric data is not exposed to frontend clients or logged. Those are vendor security statements, not an independent audit presented in this review.
Validation is paid, not free
Reelback offers a $99 pilot rather than a stated free trial. The credit toward the first month helps a buyer who subscribes, but a team that rejects the product still spends the fee. That is defensible if the pilot uses real acceptance criteria. It is poor value if it becomes a guided demo on easy footage.
It is not a DAM or full review layer
Reelback says it is not a DAM or review tool. That means a buyer should not assume rights records, retention schedules, approval states, proxy governance, archival restore, storage lifecycle, or enterprise permission design. The features page does list timecoded comments and shared search, but collaboration features do not turn a retrieval layer into a media operations system.
The homepage labels white-label client search portals as coming soon. They are not a shipped capability to include in the buying case. If client access is mandatory now, require a live production account demonstration or choose a system that documents the workflow as available.
Processed-hour overages can force an early tier jump
Reelback's base prices look orderly, but Starter's $30 overage rate reaches Pro's $599 base around 18.33 total hours. Pro reaches Studio's $1,499 base at 70 total hours under the stated linear rates. A production with spiky dailies should model its busiest month, confirm how partial hours are billed, and ask whether failed uploads or re-processing consume allowance.
Broad format support still needs a camera-original check
Reelback says it accepts ProRes, DNxHR, H.264, H.265, and other production formats across MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, MXF, MTS, and WebM containers, up to 100GB per file, with H.264 proxies for non-web-friendly codecs. That is broad public coverage, not a guarantee for every codec profile, audio layout, timecode track, spanned clip, or camera-original relink. Put the production's hardest real file in the pilot.

Reelback is worth a $99 pilot for an interview-heavy production that needs a producer to search across supplied footage and give an editor structured selects. It is not yet worth an annual subscription on public evidence alone. The fixed examples establish a credible workflow, but only the buyer's known-timecode corpus can establish retrieval quality, and only the intended editor can establish handoff quality.
Use Adobe Premiere instead when all relevant footage and decisions already live in one Premiere project and local processing is preferable. Scope Iconik when connected storage, review, permissions, metadata, and lifecycle are the actual purchase. Reelback wins only in the middle: a dedicated searchable index is needed, but a full media management system is not.
The Monday move is concrete. Build the five-hour manifest, write the expected source timecodes and pass rules, name the target NLE and source-media path, and send Reelback the retention and deletion questions before paying.
