Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT: Which Workspace Fits Your Team?
Compare Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work by job: reports, local files, cloud tasks, schedules, plans and team controls.
Published

Choose ChatGPT Work when colleagues must share responsibility for recurring reports and scheduled jobs. Choose Claude Cowork when your main need is to turn a discussion and a pile of documents into a finished deliverable in the same conversation. Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT starts at the same $20 monthly entry price, so the deciding questions are where the inputs live, who owns the recurring task, and which controls your organization needs.
Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT: Which Should You Pick?
ChatGPT Work is the stronger default for a shared operations queue. Claude Cowork is the stronger fit for conversational report work in an organization already using Claude. These are workflow recommendations, not claims that one model produces more accurate answers.
- Operations, customer success, or revenue teams: Pick OpenAI's ChatGPT Work on Business or Enterprise when several people must maintain a recurring task. Its Team Tasks have shared ownership, approved connections, and a service account, an account that runs work for the group rather than an individual employee.
- Research, finance, or strategy teams already using Claude: Pick Anthropic's Claude Cowork where the unified experience is enabled. You can develop the question and hand over the resulting document work without changing conversations or choosing a separate mode.
- A solo operator working through desktop folders: Both deserve consideration. Prefer Work if choosing local execution is essential. New personal Cowork sessions run in the cloud, even when they reach files through your desktop app.
- An enterprise with specialized security requirements: Decide from the configuration your administrator can enable. Claude's unified experience excludes some configurations, and ChatGPT's consumer cloud-browser sign-in features do not automatically carry into Enterprise.
The decision flips when an individual's useful assistant becomes a process that colleagues must operate in their absence. At that point, ownership, credentials and review access matter more than which interface you prefer.
Verified against Anthropic's and OpenAI's live documentation and pricing pages on November 1, 2026. This comparison evaluates documented access, execution, scheduling, sharing and limits. No signed-in head-to-head test was run.
Anthropic made unified Chat and Cowork generally available for Enterprise on October 23. OpenAI dates GPT-6.1 Terra's Work rollout to October 26, followed by increased Pro allowances documented in its October 29 plan update. Terra's arrival and the allowance change are separate events. Compare the Job You Need Done
Both products can work with files and continue cloud jobs while you are away. The meaningful differences concern execution choices, shared task ownership and account-specific access.

Claude vs ChatGPT for Writing and File Analysis
Claude wins the handoff from a developing question to a report; neither earns a blanket writing-quality victory from documentation. If your weekly board update starts as an uncertain discussion, reducing the gap between that discussion and delegated work is useful.
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for multi-step knowledge work. It can prepare documents, spreadsheets with formulas, presentations and research outputs. In the unified experience, a conversation can become a cloud work session when the task requires it. For a strategy lead, that means discussing which customer segments matter, adding the source material, then asking for the analysis and presentation in the same thread. Cowork capabilities.
The limitation is rollout and configuration, not a lack of cloud execution. Enterprise general availability does not mean every existing organization has enabled the unified experience. Its administrator setting, Chat and Cowork unified, remains off initially for existing organizations; the documented default-on date is November 16, subject to prerequisites and prior choices. Confirm the setting before designing training around an interface your colleagues cannot yet see. Enterprise setup.
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's mode for delegated work that ends in a reviewable output. Its documented jobs include briefs, decks, analysis and recurring updates, using files and connected tools. The explicit Work switch can be helpful when you want to distinguish a quick question from an assignment that may run tools and consume more allowance. Getting started with Work.
For a finance operator, give either product the same source exports, reporting period and reconciliation rules. Require a workbook that preserves source values, explains transformations and marks missing data. A polished paragraph is not evidence that the totals reconcile. Review the result against the source files before distributing it.
Pick Claude for the conversational workflow; pick Work when this report will become a shared recurring process. Our Claude Cowork guide and ChatGPT Work review cover the individual products in more depth.
Claude vs ChatGPT for Everyday Use
Choose the product whose normal conversations already contain your useful working context. Moving a small daily drafting job rarely justifies rebuilding instructions and reconnecting applications. A founder who needs an occasional investor update should start with the subscription already in use, then judge the draft against the company's facts and tone.
The buying decision changes when the job needs a reliable schedule, shared maintenance or a particular execution environment. Those requirements deserve a workspace decision; an occasional rewrite usually does not.
Local Files and Cloud Work: Check the Dependency
Work wins when you need an explicit local execution option. Both can continue cloud work with your laptop closed. Access to a folder on your computer and execution on your computer are different capabilities.
On personal Claude Pro, Max and Ultra plans, new Cowork sessions run in Anthropic's cloud. Connecting a folder lets the session reach that folder through the open desktop app; it does not turn the session into local-only execution. If Desktop closes, the cloud session may continue, but it cannot fetch fresh local inputs. Claude's execution and file-access rules.
ChatGPT Work offers local and cloud execution where enabled. With supported sync and local computer access, you can continue an eligible conversation from another device while it uses approved resources on the connected computer. That computer must remain online for those resources. Work also cannot switch from local to cloud execution midway through a turn. Work across devices.
Local execution should not be read as a promise that no context leaves the device: OpenAI says messages and task context may be stored in the cloud even when execution is local. Work and Codex access guide.

For a weekly operating report, ask where the final export appears. If it lands only in a colleague's Downloads folder, a cloud schedule does not make that export continuously available. Put the required input in an approved shared source, or deliberately keep the relevant computer available. Otherwise the task can run on time and still use yesterday's data.
Work also has the clearer advantage for eligible unattended browser work. Its cloud browser runs on a separate computer. However, authenticated website access on web and mobile is documented for Plus and Pro, subject to rollout, and is unavailable for Enterprise and Edu. A personal demonstration of a signed-in portal workflow therefore does not prove that your enterprise deployment can reproduce it. Cloud-browser availability.
Claude's desktop browser actions require the desktop app to remain open. That does not prevent cloud research through supported remote tools, but it matters if your process depends on clicking through a local browser session. Treat web search, a connector and browser control as different ways of reaching information, each with its own access requirements.
Scheduled Tasks: ChatGPT Work Wins Shared Ownership
Choose Work for a recurring job that several colleagues must maintain. Choose either product for a personal cloud briefing with accessible inputs. Scheduling alone is no longer a useful differentiator.
Claude supports recurring tasks on all paid plans. They can use configured connectors, skills and plugins, and remote schedules can run while your device is offline. A research lead can ask for a recurring brief from approved sources and review each resulting session. Work with local dependencies still needs the relevant device; older local schedules also retain their local behavior. Claude scheduling documentation.
ChatGPT supports personal schedules, including tasks that return to an existing chat. Its cloud schedules use uploaded context and connected tools; desktop schedules using local projects need the computer on and the app running. Scheduled tasks documentation.
The stronger distinction is Team Tasks on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise. Authorized colleagues can review and maintain recurring work, which runs using the team's service account and configured connections. This suits a customer-success digest that another account manager must maintain while its creator is away. Team Task availability and maintenance.

There are practical limits. Team Tasks do not inherit the creator's personal memory or chat history. New members can see earlier runs and generated files, and individual runs cannot have separate access restrictions. Team Tasks use workspace credits, with team spending limits separate from individual limits. Team Task operating rules.
That changes how you should organize work. A broadly accessible weekly sales digest and a restricted compensation analysis should not share a team merely because the same analyst created both. Put the method, permitted sources and review criteria into saved instructions. Before an owner leaves, check ownership and connection access rather than assuming shared ownership makes every credential permanent.
Connectors and Admin Controls: Buy the Permission You Need
Work wins for documented shared app-account operation; Claude is a good fit when its existing enterprise controls already match your deployment. Count the actions you can authorize, not the number of logos in an integrations directory.
A connector supplies access to an external service. A skill supplies instructions for doing a job, and a plugin can package instructions and tools. Seeing a service listed does not establish whether your account can only search it, edit a document, or send a message.
For a recurring customer brief, verify access to the specific customer records, the source documents and the output destination. Then check whose account provides that access. Work's team connections let colleagues use approved shared accounts without each person reconnecting the same provider account. An unattended run cannot complete a new sign-in for you. Connections for Team Tasks.
Claude is consolidating the discovery of connectors, skills and plugins into one Plugins experience. The rollout began October 29 for personal and Team plans; Enterprise follows November 30. Existing installations carry over. This is a navigation change, not proof that the permissions of every connector have changed. Claude Plugins rollout.
The Enterprise Gaps That Can Reverse the Verdict
Claude's unified Enterprise experience supports conversation sharing, but only when both chat-sharing and cloud-session-sharing settings permit it. Do not apply an older Cowork no-sharing rule to every unified conversation. The unified experience also retains role controls, retention and Compliance API coverage. Unified Enterprise administration.
Its current exclusions are material: organizations using zero data retention, the HIPAA-ready configuration or customer-managed encryption keys cannot enable the unified experience. They keep their existing configuration. This is a product-availability boundary, not a judgment about whether your organization meets a legal requirement.
OpenAI documents Work access for eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces using Enterprise Key Management. Work access, model access and tool permissions remain separate controls. The specific cloud-browser sign-in restriction still applies; buying enterprise administration does not automatically provide every personal-plan workflow. Work access and key management.
For a mid-market CTO, the sensible next step is a configuration review of the exact intended workflow: inputs, model, connection, execution location and output audience. A general statement that either product is enterprise-ready is too broad to make that decision.
Models: Terra Changes the Work Starting Point
Start a bounded Work pilot with GPT-6.1 Terra when the job involves visual inputs, concise writing or computer actions. That follows OpenAI's model guidance; it is not a measured win over Claude.
OpenAI positions GPT-6.1 Sol for complex work, GPT-6 Astra for the most demanding analysis, and GPT-6 Luna for focused repeatable tasks. Terra is available in Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, subject to workspace access. It is not an option in regular Chat and does not support UAE inference residency. Model guidance, plan availability.
For example, catalog cleanup with clear image-matching rules is a plausible Terra pilot. A board recommendation built from conflicting financial and customer evidence deserves evaluation on a more deliberative model too. Compare the saved output and its supporting evidence, not just the confidence of the completion message.
Claude Cowork supports models including Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1, with plan and administrator restrictions. Fable access is particularly important to distinguish: Pro and Team Standard use paid usage credits; Max, Ultra and Team Premium include Fable within up to half of their weekly allowance. That is a share of the allowance, not extra capacity. Claude model coverage, Fable entitlements.
Claude Enterprise administrators can use Efficient mode to limit the unified experience to Sonnet and Haiku, with new sessions starting on Sonnet 5.5 at low effort. That makes Claude attractive for an organization that wants a centrally chosen starting point. Both products let you choose models for scheduled work; Work's named Terra option is a useful starting point for visual jobs. Neither approach substitutes for checking the resulting report.
Claude vs ChatGPT Pricing: Plans and Stated Limits
The entry prices and standard team-seat prices are equal; the included work is not a fixed number of finished reports. Prices below are USD, before applicable tax, as checked November 1. Annual prices are per-month rates billed annually unless stated otherwise.
Claude's current paid ladder uses Max and Ultra, rather than treating both higher tiers as Max. Claude pricing.
- Claude Free: $0; Cowork is not included.
- Claude Pro: $20/month, or $200/year; Cowork included with plan usage limits.
- Claude Max: $100/month; 5x Pro usage per five-hour window and per week.
- Claude Ultra: $200/month; 10x Pro weekly usage, with no five-hour limit for verified accounts.
- Claude Team Standard: $25/seat monthly or $20 annually; Cowork included, with more usage than Pro.
- Claude Team Premium: $125/seat monthly or $100 annually; 5x Standard usage.
- Claude Enterprise: $20/seat/month annually, with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates.
Claude Team supports 2 to 150 members. Anthropic does not publish a universal message count: the model, conversation length and files affect consumption. Its app surfaces and Claude Code draw from shared plan usage, and additional limits may apply. The monthly API credits included with Max and Ultra do not extend Cowork's app allowance. Claude pricing, API credits versus app usage credits.
OpenAI's relevant Work plans are Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Free and Go advertise entry-level Codex access; that is not the same entitlement as the paid Work and Terra combination evaluated here. Work availability.
- ChatGPT Free: $0; limited Codex entry access, not the paid Work configuration compared here.
- ChatGPT Go: $8/month; limited Codex entry access, not the paid Work configuration compared here.
- ChatGPT Plus: $20/month; Work and Codex share the included allowance.
- ChatGPT Pro 100: $100/month; twice its previous Work and Codex allowance.
- ChatGPT Pro 200: $200/month; the lower allowance doubled to match the higher allowance; existing higher allowances remain.
- ChatGPT Pro 500: $500/month; twice its previous Work and Codex allowance, with Ultrafast access.
- ChatGPT Business Standard: $25/seat monthly or $20 annually; Work and Codex included.
- ChatGPT Business Premium: $125/seat monthly or $100 annually; higher Work and Codex usage, with no five-hour limit.
- ChatGPT Enterprise: Contact sales; agreement-specific usage and controls.
- ChatGPT Edu: Contact sales; agreement-specific usage and controls.
Sources: OpenAI pricing, Pro tiers, Business seats. Business requires at least 2 Standard or Premium seats in total, and you can mix them.
OpenAI publishes estimated local messages per five hours for Plus and Standard Business: 35 to 285 with GPT-6.1 Terra, 15 to 160 with GPT-6.1 Sol, 5 to 45 with GPT-6 Astra, and 350 to 3,000 with GPT-6 Luna. These are estimates, not fixed caps or cloud-task counts. Cloud tasks can consume more, weekly limits may apply, and Work shares usage with Codex. Pro currently has no five-hour limit. Flexible Enterprise and Edu pricing scales with credits; non-flexible plans generally use Plus-like per-seat limits. Published usage estimates.
The Pro increase does not promise twice as many completed jobs. OpenAI explicitly says consumption still depends on the model, task and settings, and Plus usage is unchanged. Ultrafast can also consume the included allowance faster. Pro allowance rules.
For a purchase decision, keep the seat charge and variable usage separate. Claude Enterprise adds usage to its seat price; ChatGPT Team Tasks use workspace credits rather than proving their cost from an individual's Plus allowance. Without an observed, comparable workload, a cost-per-report calculation or crossover chart would imply precision these plan pages do not supply.
Switching: Move the Workflow Before the Subscription
Switch when a required operating capability is missing, not merely because the model menu changed. Keep a working Claude report process if conversational drafting and its current access controls fit. Keep a working Work schedule if colleagues can maintain it and the outputs pass review.
The migration cost is rebuilding useful context and access. Save the task instructions, source list, output template, accepted examples and review criteria in ordinary files. Reconnect each required application in the destination and check its permissions. Recreate the schedule with an explicit time zone, then inspect a run before retiring the original.
Do not assume a shared link transfers credentials or that a new task inherits the author's private memory. Those dependencies are easy to miss when a workflow has grown through months of conversation. A subscription change cannot repair an undocumented process.
Claude Chat vs Cowork vs Code
Claude's unified experience combines discussion and agentic knowledge work where enabled. Claude Code remains a separate choice for software and tasks requiring its execution model. If your real assignment is maintaining a repository or reviewed automation code, use our Claude Cowork vs Claude Code comparison before selecting a general office-work interface.
Claude Chat vs Cowork vs Projects
A project supplies organized context; it is not a substitute for the agent doing the work. Claude projects can group files, instructions and related tasks. When switching products, preserve that source material and the instructions separately from any conversation transcript. This makes the workflow easier for a colleague to understand and reduces dependence on accumulated chat history.
Your Monday Move
Pilot one recurring deliverable and appoint its reviewer before buying higher usage. A useful first assignment is a draft weekly operating update from sources you already trust.
Define a reviewable result
Choose the reporting period, source locations, output format and reviewer. Require source links, clearly marked missing data and an explanation of any calculation. Keep the initial output as a draft.
Choose the execution path
Use cloud-accessible inputs for work that must run while laptops are closed. If a local folder or application is necessary, confirm the machine and desktop app will be available.
Choose an owner and model
For a personal Claude workflow, save the recurring instructions in its scheduled task. For shared Work, create a Team Task with approved connections and a model the team can access. Write the method into the saved instructions.
Review before expanding
Inspect the output, source coverage, exceptions, review effort and usage consumed. Check that a colleague can maintain a shared job. Expand only when the saved result and the handoff both work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Claude projects the same as Cowork?
No. Projects organize context, instructions and related work. Cowork carries out multi-step tasks using the context and access you provide. The unified experience changes how you start work, not this distinction.
Does ChatGPT have skills like Claude?
Yes. ChatGPT Work supports reusable skills and plugins, including for scheduled work. Port the instructions carefully and reconnect the required tools; similar packaging does not establish identical permissions. Scheduled tasks and skills.
What is the price of Claude.ai Pro?
Claude Pro costs $20 when billed monthly or $200 for an annual subscription. Cowork is included, subject to usage limits. Claude pricing.
Is Claude a good AI tool?
For an operator who needs document synthesis and a conversational path into delegated work, Claude is a strong fit. The useful evaluation is whether the output preserves your facts and meets your review criteria, not whether the prose sounds confident.
Is there a new AI that is better than Claude?
There is no universal winner established here. GPT-6.1 Terra adds another Work option for visual and computer-based tasks. ChatGPT's shared task ownership can make it the better workspace for an operations process without proving superior output on every task.
Is ChatGPT better than Claude?
Choose ChatGPT Work for shared recurring operations and its documented Team Task controls. Choose Claude for unified discussion-to-deliverable work where enabled. Verify plan-specific access before making either choice.
Who is ChatGPT's biggest competitor?
For the agent-workspace decision covered here, Anthropic's Claude Cowork is a direct alternative. That does not establish a market-share ranking across every AI product category.
What shouldn't you tell ChatGPT?
Do not provide passwords or information you lack permission to share. For work material, use the approved workspace and connections, and check who can view the task and its outputs before adding sensitive context.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic knowledge-work experience for tasks such as reports, file analysis and research. Where Chat and Cowork are unified, you describe the task in the conversation rather than selecting a separate Cowork mode.
Does ChatGPT have a Cowork equivalent?
Yes. ChatGPT Work is the relevant comparison for delegated reports, files, research and scheduled tasks. Codex is the separate technical interface, while ordinary Chat serves quick questions and conversation. OpenAI's product distinction.
