DeepSeek V4 Explained: V4.1 Flash or Pro for Your Product?

DeepSeek V4 now means two served models: DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 and DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813. Start a new product evaluation with Flash, use it when images are part of the input, and keep Pro where your text-workflow checks justify it. The 17 October 2026 change also means an unchanged legacy Flash name can now call a different model.

DeepSeek V4 Today: Two Model Names, One Migration to Check

DeepSeek, the model family available through an API and downloadable weights, needs a version label in your production notes. “V4” alone no longer tells you which model processed a request. DeepSeek's current hosted API maps deepseek-flash to DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 and deepseek-v4-pro to DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813. Models & Pricing.

Verified on 18 October 2026 against DeepSeek's live Models & Pricing page and the Hugging Face cards for those exact revisions. The recommendations here use documented capabilities, deployment requirements and evaluation design; they are not hands-on performance-test results.

DeepSeek V4 Release Date: What Changed on 17 October

The October release updates the Flash side of the family. Both legacy names, deepseek-v4-flash and deepseek-v4-flash-vision-exp, remain accepted, but their former models have been retired. Requests now reach V4.1-Flash-1017 and retain Flash pricing. Use deepseek-flash for new integrations. Current alias mapping.

For an operator, a successful request is not evidence that the old model is still running. An alias is like a department's phone number: the number can stay the same while a different person answers. If an internal tool changed its writing, tool selection or response length without a configuration change, include the served-model migration in your investigation.

The immediate action is to replay representative tasks and compare accepted results. Changing the configured string to the preferred name makes the setup clearer, but it does not restore the retired model.

These are the hosted limits in DeepSeek's model table. A token is a unit of text the model processes. Context is the working space for a request; maximum output limits how much it can generate. Neither number guarantees accurate recall across everything you supply.

For a CTO evaluating repository analysis, keep the relevant files and acceptance checks explicit. A large window can accommodate more material, but it does not establish that a model found the right evidence or preserved every constraint.

Which Model Belongs in Your Product?

Choose by required input and accepted outcomes, then compare operating cost. My starting recommendation is Flash for a new evaluation because it combines the broader input capability with the lower published token rates. Pro earns a route when it produces better accepted results on that route, or when an existing Pro integration already meets the requirement.

DeepSeek V4 Flash: Start With a Bounded Job

For a funded founder adding support-ticket classification or draft replies, start with Flash and a task whose answer you can check. Supply the relevant policy, define the allowed categories, and measure how often a reviewer accepts the result. These are proposed evaluation tasks, not claims that this model has passed your workload.

For a solo technical builder, use the same discipline with code: choose a constrained change, preserve the failing example, and require the resulting patch to pass the project's checks. A model that writes convincing explanations but leaves the bug in place has not completed the job.

DeepSeek V4 Vision: Images Make the Choice

Flash supports image input; Pro does not. That boundary decides a screenshot-based interface bug, a photographed form or a chart-reading request before benchmark preferences enter the discussion. Vision support by model.

If your application escalates difficult requests to Pro, give image-bearing requests a separate route. Sending the same request to a model without vision does not preserve the task. Converting an image into a text description first is another workflow, with another opportunity to lose information.

Clay conservatory paths send image input directly to Flash, while text tasks reach a shared trial before choosing Flash or Pro.
Input capability decides the image route. Your acceptance checks decide the text route.

Keep Pro for text work that has earned its place. A mid-market CTO with a stable Pro-based internal assistant should preserve that baseline while evaluating Flash. A senior operator should compare review effort and failure handling as well as completed answers. Do not migrate a dependable text workflow solely because a newer revision exists.

At off-peak rates, Flash is $0.15 input / $0.60 output versus Pro $0.66 / $1.98 per 1M tokens, with uncached input in both cases; DeepSeek's source rates and our DeepSeek pricing page cover the full rate card.

Thinking Mode Changes the Request, Not the Model Name

Thinking and non-thinking are settings for both models, not separate products to select. Thinking gives the model an explicit reasoning stage before its final answer. Use it as a candidate for planning, difficult debugging and tasks with interacting constraints; evaluate non-thinking for bounded extraction or classification where extra deliberation may add little value.

The hosted API enables thinking by default. In Chat Completions requests, set thinking.type to enabled or disabled; the documented effort choices are low, high and max, with high the default. Keep those settings explicit so a future comparison is reproducible. Thinking-mode controls.

A builder moving an agent should check conversation state as well as the final answer. When a request includes tools, DeepSeek requires previous reasoning_content to be passed back, including turns without a tool call. Dropping it can produce a 400 error. A successful single-turn chat therefore does not validate a multi-turn agent. Tool-state requirements.

How to Call the Current DeepSeek API

Use the API alias in model, not the Hugging Face repository name. With your DeepSeek key already available in the DEEPSEEK_API_KEY environment variable, this request follows the documented Chat Completions interface:

Bash
curl --fail-with-body https://api.deepseek.com/chat/completions \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer ${DEEPSEEK_API_KEY}" \
  -d '{
    "model": "deepseek-flash",
    "messages": [
      {"role": "user", "content": "List the checks before releasing a small API change."}
    ],
    "thinking": {"type": "enabled"},
    "reasoning_effort": "high",
    "stream": false
  }'

For a Pro text evaluation, replace the model value with deepseek-v4-pro. For non-thinking, set thinking.type to disabled. The documented base URLs are https://api.deepseek.com for the OpenAI-compatible format and https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic for the Anthropic-compatible format. DeepSeek's API quickstart.

This is a documentation-based example, not a request executed for this article. After connectivity works, check response parsing, tool round trips, failures and timeouts with the client your product uses. Those checks determine whether the integration is ready.

DeepSeek V4 Benchmark Results Need Their Version Labels

The exact checkpoint and evaluation setup matter more than a “Flash versus Pro” headline. A benchmark is a defined task set; an agent harness is the surrounding software that runs tools and returns results to the model. Changing either can change the result.

DeepSeek's Flash-1017 card reports 77.0 on DeepSWE v1.1 using Mini-SWE-V2, and 42.3 on Terminal-Bench 4.0 using Claude Code. These are DeepSeek's own figures, reproduced with the card's benchmark names and harness notes. They are not independent measurements of your application. Flash-1017 model card.

DeepSeek V4 Pro Benchmark: Keep the Task Set Attached

DeepSeek's Pro-0813 card reports 87.9 on Terminal Bench 2.1. For public code-agent tasks, it describes DeepSeek Harness in minimal mode with maximum reasoning effort. This is DeepSeek's own result on that benchmark version. It cannot be ranked against the Flash-1017 Terminal-Bench 4.0 number as though the task sets were identical. Pro-0813 model card.

For a builder choosing a coding assistant, the useful experiment holds the repository, task, tools and acceptance checks constant. Record whether the patch works and how much review it needs. The published results justify trying a candidate; they do not decide which model should handle your production traffic.

The revision-specific card is the right starting point when someone shares an older result. A score attached only to “V4.1 Flash” may describe the earlier checkpoint.

Open Weights: Choose Who Operates the Model

Both exact revisions publish MIT-licensed repositories and weights. Weights are the model's learned parameters; downloading them lets you arrange inference on infrastructure you operate. Calling the hosted API is a separate deployment choice. Flash-1017, Pro-0813.

For a solo builder, a hosted trial is the smaller integration project. For a company that already operates model infrastructure, downloadable weights create another option. The relevant question is who will maintain serving capacity, upgrades, logs and incident response.

DeepSeek V4 Technical Report and Deployment Instructions

The Flash-1017 card links the V4.1 technical report and its own local inference instructions, including weight conversion. The Pro-0813 card links the V4 report and explicitly documents serving with vLLM and SGLang, software for running model inference. Follow the instructions for the checkpoint you actually download. Flash instructions, Pro instructions.

There is a concrete integration gap to plan for: both cards provide dedicated prompt-encoding implementations rather than a Jinja-format chat template, the template many serving stacks use to arrange conversation messages. Flash's card also describes deepseek-recipe for encoding requests and parsing responses, while leaving inference, tool execution and HTTP transport to the caller. Downloading the weights does not assemble those pieces for you.

For a broader self-operated shortlist, see our open-source LLM guide. Keep the deployment decision separate from the model's benchmark position.

Search and Fetch Change What an Agent Must Record

Record web-tool requests separately from model tokens. DeepSeek's Models & Pricing page lists Search and Fetch as standalone APIs charged per successful request. It says server-side tools in DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code and Codex already use these APIs; those integrated calls are currently free, with per-request billing beginning at 00:00 Beijing time on 1 November 2026. Search and Fetch billing notice.

For an operator running a research agent, a completed answer can involve model generation plus multiple web operations. A token-only usage dashboard cannot show that whole workload. Add separate successful-request counters for Search and Fetch, and examine whether retries or repeated lookups are doing useful work.

A clay conservatory work bay has a Model bench with a Tokens ledger and Search and Fetch cabinets sharing a Requests tray.
Model tokens and Search/Fetch requests are separate usage records.

The date is a change in the operating assumptions of an existing agent, not a reason to rebuild it. Before the cutoff, make the tool traffic visible and set a request budget appropriate to the job. The rate details belong in the linked pricing guide.

What Is Overhyped, and What to Do Next

A newer name, a larger context window and open weights each answer a different question. None makes a model the automatic choice for every job.

“Pro” does not establish a universal quality ranking. A large context limit does not establish dependable recall. MIT-licensed weights do not establish a finished serving system or free hosted inference. And accepting a legacy alias does not mean the old model remains available.

Act now if your product uses either legacy Flash name: replay its acceptance tasks and check behavior under the currently served revision. Also act if your agent uses integrated Search or Fetch, because its usage records need to reflect the billing boundary.

Wait to switch if an existing Pro text workflow meets its requirements and you have no measured reason to replace it. The Flash alias migration does not change your configured Pro route; its current mapping remains Pro-0813. Keep the ordinary checks appropriate to any hosted dependency.

For the separate vendor decision, use DeepSeek vs Claude or DeepSeek vs ChatGPT. This model selection should fit the surrounding product and workflow.

Monday move: choose a frequent, checkable task and replay saved examples through your current route and the relevant candidate. Include an image case if your product accepts images, a long input and a failed tool call. Record accepted outcomes, review effort, elapsed time, model tokens and web-tool requests. Promote the candidate only when those results support the change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to download DeepSeek-V4?

Use the official Hugging Face repositories linked above for DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 or DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813, then follow that repository's inference instructions. Keep the checkpoint revision in your deployment records.

Is DeepSeek the best AI?

There is no universal choice established by these cards. Select the model that accepts your inputs and meets your task, integration and operating requirements.

How much RAM is needed for DeepSeek-V4?

The checked cards do not establish one universal RAM minimum. Pro-0813 gives a serving example on a single 4×GB300 node, which is an example configuration, not a minimum for every deployment. Use the checkpoint's documented serving instructions rather than inferring memory needs from a parameter count. Pro card.

Is DeepSeek 4 free?

The model weights are MIT-licensed; the hosted API is metered. Download access and the cost of operating inference are separate questions.

How much does DeepSeek V4 cost?

Use the off-peak comparison above for the initial model decision, then the linked DeepSeek pricing guide for cached input, peak rates and tool charges. There is no single flat price for every request.

How to access DeepSeek V4 for free?

The official repositories provide downloadable weights. That does not provide free compute, and these sources do not establish a free API allowance for a production product.

Is DeepSeek free and unlimited?

No unlimited hosted API entitlement follows from the MIT license. The API's model usage is metered, and operating downloaded weights requires your own inference resources.

How good is DeepSeek-V4 Pro?

DeepSeek's Pro-0813 card gives vendor-reported results that make it a candidate for text-agent evaluation. Keep it when it meets your workload's checks; do not treat the Pro label as proof that it improves every task.

How to use DeepSeek-V4?

Call the hosted API with deepseek-flash or deepseek-v4-pro, or follow the exact checkpoint's documented inference path to operate the weights yourself. Select the thinking setting and validate the surrounding application.
