Pick DeepSeek if you mainly need chat, search, coding help, and document extraction, or want to evaluate an open-weight model for your own application. Its consumer app is free. Pick ChatGPT Business for a team that needs a managed workspace and a no-training default, subject to your company's vendor review. OpenAI says it does not train on Business or API inputs and outputs by default. You are comparing three products, not two models

The biggest buying mistake is comparing a free chat app with an API token price and calling the result settled. Separate the consumer assistant, the managed work environment, and the developer API. They solve different purchasing problems.

DeepSeek as a consumer assistant

DeepSeek is a free web and mobile assistant with chat history sync, web search, Deep-Think mode, file upload, and text extraction, according to its official app page. It is a reasonable place to start when your work mostly stays in text.

The current API names are deepseek-flash, serving DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and deepseek-v4-pro, serving DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813. The older V4 Flash aliases temporarily route to V4.1 Flash. Both current models support a 1M-token context window, meaning the amount of material a request can hold, plus thinking modes and tool calls. Use the current model and pricing page, not R1/V3 or early V4 price lists.

V4.1 Flash can understand images as well as text. That matters for a document workflow involving charts or screenshots, but understanding an image is different from generating one: its model card describes text output. The current hosted model pages do not document a native image-generation endpoint.

The earlier announcement proposed redirecting V4 Pro requests to Flash; DeepSeek's current changelog instead confirms that V4 Pro remains available. Choose by the current model ID and your evaluation results, rather than assuming “Pro” must be the best option for every task.

ChatGPT as a work environment

ChatGPT is a managed assistant whose value sits above the model: voice, image generation, file analysis, Deep Research, memory, and reusable custom GPTs. The Plus benefits page and plan comparison describe which features and allowances come with each subscription.

Since October 7, 2026, OpenAI has been rolling out GPT-6 in Chat: GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, with GPT-6 Luna rolling out to Free and Go from October 8. It adds Intelligent UI, which can turn an answer into charts, forms or interactive tools. The current model guide gives Plus access to Medium and High thinking, with Extra High and Pro available on eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Pro effort uses GPT-6 Astra and has its own allowances. The guide still contains GPT-5.6 Luna wording for Free and Go, while the launch and pricing pages advertise GPT-6, so check the model shown on your account during rollout. Do not assume that every plan gets the same reasoning options.

For a business buyer, the consequence is practical: you can ask for a visual explanation or an interactive calculator inside the conversation, while higher plans buy additional capabilities and usage. GPT-6 in Chat is also separate from GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex. Buying ChatGPT is not the same as buying one GPT API model.

The developer APIs

The APIs are metered infrastructure. A ChatGPT Plus subscription does not include OpenAI API usage, and free DeepSeek chat does not include free production API volume. This distinction matters for every cost comparison.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT price difference

DeepSeek's free app is attractive, but neither the cheapest subscription nor the cheapest API model automatically wins the workflow. Prices and product claims were checked against the makers' live pages on October 17, 2026. The figures below are in US dollars.

Consumer and team cost

• DeepSeek chat: free, with no ads or in-app purchases advertised on its official app page.
• ChatGPT Free: $0/month, with limited access to tools such as uploads, images and Deep Research. Plans.
• ChatGPT Go: $8/month in the US, for higher eligible tool allowances than Free; may include ads. Plans.

Business requires at least two paid seats, which can mix Standard and Premium, under its current billing rules. Start with the lower tier unless your workload needs the extra allowance. A personal Pro subscription is not a substitute for a managed business workspace, and a free DeepSeek account is not a free self-hosted deployment.

Compare the API rates on the same basis

GPT-6 Luna is cheaper than DeepSeek on both uncached input and output at the rates below. DeepSeek remains cheaper than GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra. That is a price comparison, not proof that the models produce equally useful work.

Each row gives prices per 1M tokens. DeepSeek pairs are off-peak / peak. OpenAI figures use Standard, short-context pricing; cached input, long context, other service tiers and tool calls can change the bill.

DeepSeek's peak periods are 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC, Monday through Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays; other hours are off-peak. Cached input means previously processed material the service can reuse. V4.1 Flash's cached-input rates are lower than Luna's, so a workflow with substantial reuse can change the ranking. Use each vendor's linked rate card for that mix.

When an API replaces a subscription

An API budget is not a product equivalent. A custom chat wrapper still needs an interface, file handling, memory, search, permissions, maintenance and any image or voice services your users expect. Image creation exposes the capability gap

ChatGPT includes image generation with plan-dependent allowances. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash can interpret images but outputs text; its current hosted model documentation does not establish a native image-generation service. Everyday work and research winner: ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the better default for daily knowledge work because its documented tools cover more of the finished task. For a solo operator writing emails, summarizing documents, checking code or researching a straightforward question, try the free options first. ChatGPT Free also includes limited image creation, voice and Deep Research. Paying makes sense when an allowance or feature repeatedly blocks useful work, not simply because an assistant has a newer model name.

For a senior operator producing a board memo from a spreadsheet and source files, ChatGPT Plus is the starting recommendation. File analysis, expanded research and reusable context reduce handoffs. The current pricing page advertises unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse safeguards, but tools and higher reasoning models still have separate allowances. Check the account's displayed limits before planning sustained production work.

For research, separate “read these documents” from “find, evaluate and cite current sources.” DeepSeek's large context window is useful when you already possess the material, and it now documents search APIs too. ChatGPT's advantage for a non-technical buyer is packaging those activities into a managed assistant. Context size alone does not measure research quality.

For a production team, keep the model that passes those checks; compare cheaper candidates against the same acceptance criteria before moving traffic.

DeepSeek is worth evaluating for bounded work such as generating test variants, translating comments, classifying issues and extracting schemas. Include GPT-6 Luna in that cost evaluation too. DeepSeek's privacy policy, last updated February 10, 2026, covers prompts, text and voice input, uploaded files, photos, feedback and chat history. It allows use of personal data to train and improve its technology, provides a right to opt out of that use, and says personal data is directly collected, processed and stored in the People's Republic of China.

Its retention policy depends on purpose and legal obligations. One stated example is keeping account, input and payment personal data while the account exists to provide the service. A training opt-out does not by itself change the hosting location or erase retained data. For a company with customer documents or confidential source code, those are separate procurement questions.

For politically sensitive research, treat provider moderation and incomplete answers as coverage risks. This comparison did not run refusal tests and does not assign a censorship score. Verify consequential claims against primary sources rather than treating either assistant as an authority.

OpenAI's US consumer privacy policy, updated September 10, 2026, says content may be used to improve models and provides an opt-out. Temporary Chats are not used to improve its models, but retention can still apply. The policy describes processing in the US and other jurisdictions; a paid personal subscription is not a promise of a particular data location.

For ChatGPT Business and the API, OpenAI says inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. Qualifying organizations can configure retention, including zero data retention in the API; this is not an automatic guarantee for every account or feature. Self-hosting DeepSeek changes the data path. Prompts can stay on infrastructure you control, subject to logging, telemetry, backups, access and any external tools you connect. This can meet an internal-data boundary, but your team takes responsibility for security, retention and operations.

For a developer, compare the current DeepSeek models with the OpenAI model suited to the same task. Keep track of cache reuse, peak-hour billing, retries and review. Your acceptance test decides the winner; a historical price ratio cannot.

For a company, let data handling decide before price. Hosted DeepSeek can be inexpensive and still fail procurement. Self-hosted DeepSeek can satisfy a data boundary and still be expensive to operate.
