How to Use ChatGPT Sketch on Mobile

ChatGPT Sketch lets you draw a rough layout inside the mobile message box, pair it with written constraints, and turn both into an image. For a small business owner planning a poster, the sketch carries the composition while the prompt carries the offer, colors, style, and exact copy. Use it for the first visual draft, then inspect every letter and any sensitive layout before you publish or print.

The native workflow arrived with ChatGPT Images 2.5 on September 8, 2026. It is more direct than photographing a napkin drawing or rebuilding a rough layout with shapes in another app: type @, choose Sketch, draw, describe, and send.

The Short Answer

Here is how to use the ChatGPT sketch tool on mobile:

  1. Open a conversation in the ChatGPT mobile app.
  2. Type @ in the message box and select Sketch.
  3. Draw the rough composition. You can choose a color, erase part of it, or undo a stroke.
  4. Tap the checkmark to confirm the sketch.
  5. Add written instructions for the subject, colors, style, copy, and aspect ratio you want.
  6. Send the message to generate the image.
  7. Open the result full-screen to edit it, comment on it, or select a specific area for revision.
  8. Use Save to download the result, Share to send it to another app, or Share > Prompt template > Copy link to share the prompt.

Those controls come from OpenAI's current Images in ChatGPT guide. ChatGPT Images is available on web, iOS, and Android, but Sketch itself is documented as a mobile input.

The sketch supplies the arrangement. The written prompt supplies the rules.

What the Sketch Actually Does

The sketch is a visual brief, not a finished drawing that ChatGPT merely colors in. Think of it like sliding a rough floor plan across a table to a set designer. Your boxes, lines, and proportions show where things should go. Your written instructions explain what those things are and how the finished scene should feel.

That division of labor matters. A poster sketch might show a large image at the top, an offer in the middle, and a clear area for a call to action at the bottom. The prompt can then specify a bakery window, a warm cream and red palette, a handmade paper style, a 4:5 aspect ratio, and the exact words that are allowed.

The sketch does not lock every pixel. ChatGPT interprets both inputs. If the placement is important, say so directly in the prompt: "Keep the large image in the upper half, the offer centered, and the bottom quarter clear for final copy."

This is the native ChatGPT draw-to-image path. You do not need to upload a photograph of a drawing to start it, although ChatGPT Images also supports uploaded images when you want to transform an existing asset.

A Poster Workflow You Can Copy

Start with the hierarchy, not the decoration. On the Sketch canvas, draw only the large regions that matter:

  • One rectangle for the hero image.
  • One block for the main offer.
  • One smaller block for supporting copy.
  • One clear area for a button, phone number, address, or QR code that you will place accurately later.

Then add a written brief. A useful version looks like this:

Create a 4:5 poster for a neighborhood bakery's weekend tasting. Follow the rough placement in my sketch. Use warm cream, dark brown, and one red accent. Show a close crop of fresh bread in the top section. Include only this text: "WEEKEND TASTING" and "SATURDAY". Keep the bottom quarter uncluttered for final details. Do not add a logo or extra words.

The important details are concrete: purpose, subject, palette, aspect ratio, exact copy, and empty space. Quotation marks make the allowed text explicit. If you want more structure for writing visual prompts, the same constraint-first principle appears in this prompt framework for design work.

When the first image appears, inspect it in this order:

  1. Composition: Did the large regions from the sketch survive?
  2. Message: Is the offer immediately clear?
  3. Text: Is every visible word spelled correctly and present only once?
  4. Brand: Are the approved colors and visual cues intact?
  5. Production: Is there enough clean space for accurate dates, prices, contact details, and legal copy?

Do not try to repair five problems in one instruction. OpenAI recommends targeted revisions that name what should change and what must stay the same. For example: "Change only the bread basket to a cake stand. Keep the crop, background, colors, lighting, layout, and all text unchanged."

How to Make a Targeted Mobile Edit

Open the generated image full-screen and choose Edit to describe a change in the conversation panel. If the change belongs to one area, choose Select, adjust the selection size with the slider, highlight the area, and choose Next. Then describe the change.

The selection is a pointer, not a fence. OpenAI says highlights are not always precise and edits can extend beyond the selected area. Check the surrounding copy, object edges, faces, and brand elements after every revision, even if you selected only one corner.

On mobile, Resize and Remove are also available in the image controls. If you need a different format, ChatGPT Images supports any aspect ratio through the picker or through a written request. Use that for a new canvas shape, then recheck the composition rather than assuming every element stayed in place.

A selection points to the edit. It does not guarantee that nearby details will remain untouched.

When the image is ready, choose Save to download it. ChatGPT also stores generated images under Images, where you can revisit them on web or mobile. Choose Share to send the image to another app. To let someone reuse the prompt rather than receive only the finished image, choose Share > Prompt template > Copy link.

Seven Business Uses, Ranked by Practical Value

The best uses have one thing in common: composition is easier to show than to explain. The sketch gives the owner control over the rough arrangement without requiring production design skills.

RankWho benefitsExact workflowWhy it paysFinal check
1A restaurant or local retailer making recurring offersSketch the photo, offer, and details zones, then prompt the campaign style and revise one object at a timeThe owner can turn the idea in their head into a concrete draft before paying for production workRebuild prices, dates, addresses, and fine print in a layout tool
2An agency account manager receiving a client's rough conceptRecreate the client's boxes in Sketch, add the approved creative brief, and share the first visual direction for feedbackThe discussion starts from a visible composition instead of competing interpretations of a paragraphDo not treat the generated draft as brand-approved artwork
3A real estate agent planning an open-house postBlock the property photo, headline, and contact area, then request the desired mood and aspect ratioThe agent can compare visual directions while keeping room for accurate listing detailsAdd the address, date, and agent information with exact typography later
4An ecommerce merchandiser planning a product shootDraw the product position, prop zones, and negative space, then generate a shot conceptThe image becomes a visual brief for a photographer or an internal content teamConfirm that the generated product does not misrepresent the item
5An event producer proposing stage or booth graphicsSketch the screen, signage, people, and sight lines, then describe materials and atmosphereStakeholders can discuss arrangement before production drawings beginUse measured plans for the build, not the generated image
6A home-service business drafting a seasonal adPlace the before image, after image, offer, and contact zone, then request a visual treatmentIt creates a clear concept that a designer can finish without guessing at hierarchyVerify claims and use real project photography where required
7A nonprofit planning a fundraiser graphicSketch the hero, message, and donation area, then prompt a respectful visual directionThe team can agree on a campaign concept before committing limited design resourcesAdd donation details and accessibility-conscious copy in a production tool

The first use is the strongest because the need repeats and the decision maker is often the person holding the phone. The sketch fits the way the idea already exists: as a rough arrangement of image, offer, and details.

The Business Math Is About Tool Consolidation

ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers, and OpenAI says the new release did not change existing image-generation limits. That does not mean unlimited generation, and it does not make every dedicated design product unnecessary.

The useful comparison is the budget line. Canva currently lists a free plan, Canva Pro at $180 per year for one person, and Canva Business at $250 per year per person. Those paid plans include production-oriented features beyond rough image creation. Native Sketch moves the earliest composition draft into ChatGPT, a product a business may already use, but it does not replace brand kits, reusable layouts, print setup, scheduling, or precise typography.

So the decision is simple:

  • If you need to turn an idea into a visual direction, Sketch may cover the concept stage inside your existing ChatGPT access.
  • If you need repeatable brand control and exact production output, keep a layout tool or a designer in the workflow.
  • If you need both, generate the visual base in ChatGPT and finish the copy, logo, pricing, and export specifications elsewhere.

OpenAI has not published a measured time saving for this workflow. Treat the economics as possible tool consolidation and a cleaner handoff, not an hours-saved promise. If account access is part of the decision, compare the current ChatGPT plan breakdown separately from the mobile workflow.

Two Products Worth Building

1. A sketch-first flyer approval system

This is the strongest opportunity: a mobile workflow for restaurants, salons, fitness studios, and local retailers that turns a rough layout into an approval-ready concept, then routes exact copy into a production template.

The demand is visible. flyer maker receives about 18,100 US searches per month, with commercial intent. The smallest sellable version needs a sketch canvas, fixed fields for offer and required copy, a brand palette, one draft-generation step, a text checklist, an approval state, and export into a deterministic layout. ChatGPT handles the concept image. The product owns the repeatable business rules around it.

The catch is defensibility. A generic sketch generator will be absorbed by platform features. The moat has to be the boring part customers rely on: saved brand rules, branch-level approvals, correct offer data, reusable sizes, and a production export that does not gamble on generated text.

2. A visual campaign brief for small agencies

This product would turn a client's phone sketch and written constraints into a structured concept board that an agency can comment on, version, and hand to a designer.

ai poster generator receives about 3,600 US searches per month with transactional intent. Canva Pro's current $180 yearly price provides a useful seat-cost anchor, but the product should not compete as another general canvas. The MVP is a client intake link, the native sketch step, fields for must-keep and must-avoid details, two approved aspect ratios, targeted comments, and a final creative brief containing the selected visual plus exact copy.

The catch is workflow friction. If clients can get the same outcome by texting a sketch and a paragraph, they will. The product wins only if approvals, version history, exact-copy handling, and the designer handoff are meaningfully cleaner.

What ChatGPT Sketch Does Not Solve

It does not turn approximate input into production certainty. The official image guide explicitly warns that selected edits can affect nearby areas. OpenAI's image-generation guidance also says dense or production-critical typography should be reviewed word by word and finished in a design tool when needed.

It also does not remove these responsibilities:

  • Copy accuracy: Generated text can still require correction. Keep it short and quote it exactly.
  • Brand accuracy: Use approved assets and rebuild a real logo rather than accepting an approximation.
  • Product truth: A generated item should not imply a feature, ingredient, finish, or result the real product lacks.
  • Layout precision: A rough sketch communicates hierarchy, not measured spacing or print specifications.
  • Usage limits: Images is available on all tiers, but the September release left existing limits unchanged.

Keep adjacent product rules separate. Templates are not yet available in Work mode. OpenAI does not say that this restriction applies to Sketch, so do not turn a template limitation into a claim about the mobile drawing workflow.

Questions People Are Asking

How can I draw a sketch on my phone?

In the ChatGPT mobile message box, type @, select Sketch, draw the rough idea, and tap the checkmark. Add written instructions before sending it so the composition and the desired image treatment travel together.

Is there a ChatGPT prompt for line drawings?

Use a concrete instruction that names the subject, line treatment, background, and permitted text. For example: "Turn this sketch into a clean black line drawing of a storefront on a plain cream background. Keep the proportions from the sketch. Add no text." A prompt can guide the result, but you still need to inspect the output.

Is there a draw tool on iPhone?

Within ChatGPT, yes. ChatGPT Images is available on iOS, and the mobile composer documents the @ > Sketch path. Draw, confirm with the checkmark, add your instructions, and send.

How to use ChatGPT Sketch on mobile for free?

OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers. That includes a free tier, but the September 8 release did not change existing image-generation limits. Availability should not be read as unlimited use.
