Is Claude Free? Claude Pricing (2026): Where the Free Plan Stops

Yes, Claude is free: the $0 plan now includes Claude Design, Claude Docs and Claude Slides. Free still lacks Claude Code, Claude Dashboards, Claude Motion and monthly API credits.

Claude pricing at a glance

Claude Free is a continuing $0 plan for occasional research, writing, file work, and web search. Its included usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, and Anthropic publishes no fixed daily message count. Team API credits form one organization pool, not a separate $500 allowance for each seat type; eligible subscribers must claim the credits.

Claude's prices, features, and limits below were verified against Anthropic's live Claude pricing page, announcements, and current help pages on 10 October 2026. Prices are current US list prices before applicable tax.

On October 7, 2026, Anthropic began rolling out monthly API credits for Max and Team. Since October 8, 2026, Claude Design, Docs and Slides are out of beta on every plan, including Free; Dashboards is in beta from Pro, and Motion is in beta on Team and Enterprise. A document or deck alone no longer justifies upgrading from Free: the decision is capacity, a paid feature, governance, or eligible API work.

Free is the right default, Pro is the practical work plan, and Max combines more capacity with API credits for building apps. Team and Enterprise solve different problems: Team sells governed seats with included usage, while Enterprise charges a seat fee and meters every token separately.

The decision turns on one observation: does the current limit stop an outcome worth more than the price difference? If the answer is no, paying buys unused capacity.

What Claude Free actually includes

Claude Free is a continuing product, not a countdown to a paid trial. At $0, Anthropic currently includes chat on the web, iOS, Android, and desktop, plus web search, memory across conversations, file creation and editing with code execution, desktop extensions, connectors, and Artifacts, Claude's reusable outputs. Claude Design, Claude Docs and Claude Slides are included too, so creating a design, document or presentation no longer requires a paid plan. The compare table also lists up to 5 projects, which organize related chats and documents.

That is enough for a senior operator who asks a few research questions, rewrites a document, checks a spreadsheet, or summarizes a meeting packet without keeping Claude open all day. It is also enough for a founder evaluating whether Claude's working style fits before assigning it a recurring place in the budget.

The limit is capacity, not a missing timer. Anthropic's pricing FAQ describes a rolling five-hour session window for included usage, with weekly limits on paid plans. Current usage-based Enterprise is metered instead. Consumption changes with conversation length, attached files, the model, and the feature being used. A long conversation that repeatedly carries a large document uses more capacity than a sequence of short questions.

Free stops being comfortable when work must continue after a cap or when you need Claude Code, Claude Dashboards (beta), Claude Science, Research, more models, or Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Those are Pro additions on the current price page. Claude Motion (beta) requires Team or Enterprise, and monthly API credits require Max or Team; priority access at busy times is listed under Max.

Who never needs to pay: anyone whose useful work fits inside Free and who can wait through a reset without losing money, a deadline, or concentration. A casual user is not missing a secret value tier. Free remains the rational choice until the limit becomes measurable friction.

What each paid Claude plan buys

Pay for the smallest plan that removes a demonstrated constraint. Each step changes capacity, work surfaces, governance, or the budget for eligible API work. Match the upgrade to the constraint you need to remove.

Claude Pro: the sensible work plan

Claude Pro earns its $20 monthly price when Free interrupts useful work. It provides at least five times Free usage per five-hour session and adds weekly limits rather than unlimited access. The Pro help page also warns that Anthropic may apply model, feature, weekly, or monthly caps to manage capacity.

Pro adds Claude Code for terminal work; Claude Dashboards (beta); Claude Science; Research; expanded project access; more model access; and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Design, Docs and Slides are already included on Free. It also lets you hand off and schedule tasks. The compare table lists Claude Fable access through usage credits on Pro, rather than including Fable in the subscription allowance. A solo technical builder who uses chat and Claude Code in the same day should notice one important constraint: activity across Claude's app surfaces and Claude Code draws from the same usage pool.

The plan is $20 month to month or $200 paid up front for a year. The annual option lowers the arithmetic price to $16.67 per month, although Anthropic rounds the display to $17. The discount is worthwhile for steady use, not for a short project.

Pro does not include Claude API usage. A founder using Pro for interactive work and an application using the Claude API can receive two separate bills.

Claude Max: more flow, not unlimited Claude

Claude Max earns its price when Pro exhaustion is frequent or when you also have recurring API work that can use its included credits. Max 5x costs $100 per month and carries five times Pro usage per session. Max 20x costs $200 per month and carries twenty times Pro usage per session.

Max 5x includes $100 per month in API credits, and Max 20x includes $200 per month, after you claim them into a Claude Console organization. These fund eligible apps and agents, not extra chat or interactive Claude Code sessions. Both tiers include Pro features such as Dashboards (beta), but neither includes Motion.

Both tiers add higher output limits, priority during busy periods, and early feature access. Both still have a weekly limit across all models. Anthropic can also apply other model, feature, weekly, or monthly caps. The word "Max" is not an unlimited-use promise.

Max is monthly only, and mobile subscription prices can vary by platform. That flexibility is useful for a funded founder facing a temporary launch month: move up for a known heavy period, then move down. It is poor value for someone buying reassurance against a cap they rarely hit.

Claude Team: pay for control and per-member capacity

Claude Team is the right purchase when identity, billing, connectors, and administration matter alongside usage. The plan requires at least 2 members and supports up to 150 seats.

Standard seats cost $25 per member monthly or $20 per member per month on annual billing. Each Standard member receives 1.25 times Pro usage per session and an individual weekly limit across all models.

Premium seats cost $125 monthly or $100 per member per month on annual billing. Each Premium member receives 6.25 times Pro usage per session, plus a weekly limit across all models. That is five times Standard's per-session allowance. Both seat types include Claude Code, Design, Docs, Slides, Dashboards (beta) and Motion (beta); Premium primarily buys more capacity.

Included chat and coding usage is per person; API credits are pooled. One heavy user's included plan activity does not drain another person's allowance. The separate API balance is shared by everyone with an API key in the linked Console organization.

Anthropic's monthly API credit help page explicitly lists $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance capped at $500 per month. The pool is calculated from the seats on the plan when credits are granted. One Owner or Primary Owner claims it for the whole team; unused credits expire each billing cycle. This is a budget for building custom apps and agents, not a larger shared chat limit.

The governance layer includes central billing, single sign-on (SSO), connector controls, workplace connectors, and enterprise search. A mid-market CTO should buy Team because those controls reduce operational risk, not because several separate Pro accounts look untidy. Standard and Premium seats can be mixed so the expensive capacity goes only to people who use it. For example, 8 Standard seats and 2 Premium seats cost $450 per month on monthly billing, or $360 per month equivalent with $4,320 billed annually, before tax and extra usage. That calculation is for subscriptions; the API pool remains subject to its separate cap.

Motion adds a specific team use case: turning a report, chart or product walkthrough into an editable animation you can download as an MP4. It animates text, shapes, charts and images through code, rather than generating video footage. Start with Standard for colleagues who need that feature; choose Premium when their usage warrants it.

Enable Google Workspace access before the rollout. An Owner or Primary Owner must enable the Google Workspace connectors for the organization before members can authenticate. For live Google Docs, Sheets and Slides editing, members turn on the corresponding connectors from the chat's plus menu under Connectors, then paste a Google file link or request a Google file by name. Existing Google file permissions still apply.

The Claude for Google Workspace add-on is a separate way to work: it puts Claude inside Google's editors and is in beta on paid plans. A Google Workspace administrator may need to allow or install that Marketplace app. Buying Team does not complete either setup on your behalf.

Claude Enterprise: the seat is only the cover charge

Claude Enterprise is metered from the first token. The current public structure is $20 per seat per month, billed annually, plus all usage at standard API rates. The Enterprise help page is explicit: the seat includes access, not a token allowance.

The current usage-based plan has no plan-level or seat-level usage cap. Admins control exposure with organization and user spend limits instead. Self-serve Enterprise requires at least 20 seats; sales-assisted Enterprise requires at least 50.

At the self-serve minimum, seat access alone is $400 per month or $4,800 for the annual commitment, before one token is used. That calculation is why Enterprise belongs in a procurement decision, not an individual price comparison. Its case is advanced security, compliance, administration, a context window advertised as up to 1M tokens depending on the model, and metered scale. Enterprise does not receive the monthly API credits offered on Max and Team.

Enterprise includes Design, Docs, Slides, Dashboards and Motion, but availability can require an owner to enable them. As of this verification, Dashboards and Motion are off by default; owners can turn them on in Organization settings > Artifacts. Design, Docs and Slides turn on by default on October 15, 2026, or owners can enable them sooner.

The upgrade break-even

Claude Pro's annual plan becomes cheaper only when you keep it for more than 10 paid months. Ten monthly payments equal the $200 annual price. Month 11 takes monthly spending to $220; a full 12 months costs $240, so annual billing saves $40, or 16.67%.

Price per outcome makes the subscription easier to judge. If Pro supports 100 completed outcomes in a month, its $20 price allocates to $0.20 each. If it supports only 20, the allocation is $1 each. An outcome means a finished analysis, approved document, solved code task, or decision, not another prompt.

Max exposes a different calculation. Max 5x charges $100 for five Pro-capacity multiples, or $20 per multiple. Max 20x charges $200 for twenty multiples, or $10 per multiple. The $200 plan has the better unit price, but it is cheaper only in the abstract if most of the allowance goes unused.

The included API credits change that comparison for a builder. If you already pay $20 for Pro and spend $100 each month on eligible Claude Platform API work, that is $120 combined. Max 5x costs $100 and can cover that $100 of API work after eligibility and claiming, saving $20 in that example while adding app capacity. The saving depends on consuming eligible credits before they expire; an unused credit has no cash value to your budget.

Team annual billing has a cleaner break-even. Standard costs $240 per seat-year instead of $300 across 12 monthly payments, saving $60 or 20%. Premium costs $1,200 instead of $1,500, saving $300 or 20%. Both annual options become cheaper in month 10, so annualize stable seats rather than planned hires.

The decision rule is blunt. A senior operator whose Free limit interrupts one $100 analysis can justify Pro immediately. A solo builder who reaches Pro limits twice a quarter and has no recurring API spend should consider usage credits for those bursts before moving to Max. A team that needs SSO should evaluate Team even when individual Pro capacity is sufficient, because the purchase is governance rather than messages.

Hidden Claude costs and billing catches

The sticker price stops being the whole bill once usage credits, annual commitments, taxes, and purchase channels enter the picture.

Extra usage can turn a fixed plan into metered spend

Pro and Max subscribers can enable usage credits after reaching included limits. Continued work is then billed at standard API rates and appears as a separate charge. You prepay the balance, and the normal five-hour reset still happens.

Anthropic provides spend alerts, an auto-reload threshold, and a monthly spending cap. It also lets you set that cap to unlimited. That last option removes the safety rail, so a paid subscription can quietly become a subscription plus open-ended token spend. Research, large project files, long conversations, and Claude Code can consume credits faster because they carry more context. The monthly API credits included with Max and Team cannot pay these app overages.

Prepaid usage bundles reduce the rate: $50 of value costs $45, $250 costs $200, and $1,000 costs $700. Those are 10%, 20%, and 30% discounts. Pro and Max can buy up to $2,000 in discounted bundle value per month; Team can buy up to $3,000 in value. Usage beyond those caps returns to standard rates.

Keep app usage balances, included monthly API credits, and purchased Console credits separate. Anthropic's API billing page says purchased Console credits expire one year after purchase, cannot be extended, and are non-refundable. Included monthly API credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. Buying a large speculative API balance can leave you with expired cash.

Annual discounts exchange price for flexibility

Pro's $40 annual saving is earned only if the subscription survives the year. Team's 20% discount has the same condition at every seat. An annual seat that no longer has an owner can erase the saving faster than the lower monthly rate creates it.

Max offers no annual discount, which is a benefit for uncertain heavy use. It also means a full year of Max 5x costs $1,200 and Max 20x costs $2,400. Those totals are not discounted commitments; they are twelve monthly decisions.

Taxes, mobile pricing, and refunds change the checkout number

Anthropic's US prices exclude applicable tax. Local currency, tax handling, and mobile pricing can vary by region and platform, so the web price is the clean comparison baseline rather than a guarantee for every checkout.

Payments are generally non-refundable unless Anthropic's terms or local law require otherwise. Customers in the EEA and UK may receive a usage-prorated refund within 14 days. Apple handles subscriptions purchased through iOS, while Anthropic Support checks refund eligibility for Google Play subscriptions.

The safe practice is simple: buy annual only for stable demand, keep auto-reload capped, purchase API credit near expected use, and subscribe on the channel whose refund path you understand.

Claude app pricing versus API pricing

Claude subscriptions buy an interactive workspace; the API, an interface software uses to call Claude, buys metered model usage. Max and Team now include monthly API credits, but Pro does not. The credits are a separate Console balance and do not raise your chat, Claude Code or Cowork limits.

What the monthly API credits cover

Anthropic's credit rules cover the Claude API, including Messages and Message Batches, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents, and the Claude Agent SDK, a toolkit for building agents. They can fund your custom apps and agents on the Claude Platform. They do not cover interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, extra usage in the Claude apps, or Claude through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry.

New credits arrive after each billing payment; annual Team subscriptions receive credits monthly. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over. The included credits are consumed before purchased Console credits. If they run out, purchased credits or auto-reload can keep API work running; without another balance, requests stop until the next allocation. Organizations invoiced through Anthropic sales are billed as usual beyond the credit.

How to claim Max or Team API credits

Your eligible plan must be active and in good standing for seven days. Claim on claude.ai in a web browser, even if you subscribed on mobile; no payment card on Claude Platform is required just to claim or use the credit. Anthropic says the offer is rolling out over several days.

1. As a Max subscriber, open Settings > Billing. As a Team Owner or Primary Owner, open Organization settings > Billing.
2. Find API credits and select Link organization.
3. Choose or create the Claude Console organization that should receive the credits. You need an Owner, Admin or Billing role in that Console organization.
4. Review the Supplemental Credit Terms and confirm Link organization. The credit appears in that organization's balance.

Choose carefully: a plan links to one Console organization, and a Console organization receives credits from only one plan. Changing the linked organization requires support. On Team, the owner claims once for the whole organization; use Console workspace spend limits to control who can consume the pool.

The historical illustration below records a cancelled Sonnet 5 price increase, not a current forecast. Anthropic withdrew the scheduled increase on August 10, 2026. For the illustrated request of 10,000 input and 2,000 output tokens, the proposed move from $0.04 to $0.06 never took effect.

Claude pricing versus ChatGPT and Gemini

Monthly Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus both cost $20; Google AI Pro costs $19.99. Annual billing puts Claude Pro and Google AI Pro at effectively the same price, so that comparison turns on workflow fit.

ChatGPT's current personal ladder is $0 for Free, $8 for Go, $20 for Plus, and from $100 for Pro. A buyer who needs a paid option below $20 has Go as a cheaper entry point, while Claude's paid individual ladder jumps directly from Free to Pro.

Claude Pro's $200 annual commitment normalizes to $16.67 per month. That is $3.33 below ChatGPT Plus, or $40 across a full year. Choose Claude on that price advantage only if its work surfaces fit and 11 to 12 months of use are likely. Choose ChatGPT Plus when a monthly commitment or its product set is worth the difference. Google Gemini's personal ladder starts at $4.99 monthly for Google AI Plus, then $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annually for Google AI Pro. Google AI Ultra 5x is $99.99 monthly and Ultra 20x is $199.99 monthly.

Against twelve monthly Google AI Pro payments, annual Claude Pro is $3.32 lower per month, or $39.88 per year. Compare annual billing on both, however, and Google AI Pro's $199.99 is one cent below Claude Pro's $200. Month to month, Claude costs one cent more. At the heavy-use entry tier, Claude Max 5x equals ChatGPT Pro's starting $100 price and costs one cent more than Google AI Ultra 5x. The price bands are effectively tied; workflow fit decides the winner.

The normalized call is clear:

• Choose Claude Free while its resets stay outside important work.
• Choose Claude Pro annual for the discount against monthly Claude billing when Claude is a year-round tool.
• Choose ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus when the budget ceiling is below $20 and their respective product surfaces fit.
• Choose among the roughly $100 heavy-use tiers after measuring mainstream-plan exhaustion and any eligible API spend the subscription can cover.

Which Claude plan should you choose?

Use the smallest Claude plan that clears a named constraint.

• Stay on Free when resets are tolerable, the free capabilities cover the job, and waiting does not damage an outcome.
• Choose Pro monthly for uncertain or seasonal professional use lasting 1 to 9 months.
• Choose Pro annual for 11 to 12 expected months of use; 10 months is a tie.
• Choose Max 5x after Pro limits repeatedly interrupt high-value work, or when the included API credits reduce a measured combined app-and-API budget.
• Choose Max 20x when the additional app capacity or $200 in monthly API credits justifies its price over Max 5x. Unused capacity and expiring credits do not create savings.
• Choose Team when at least 2 people need administration, SSO, workplace connectors, Motion, or individual governed capacity. Assign Premium only where the extra allowance is needed.
• Choose Enterprise when at least 20 seats need advanced controls and metered usage is preferable to included caps.

The final check is economic, not aspirational. If Free produces the outcomes you need, it is the best Claude plan. If an interruption costs more than $20, Pro becomes easy to defend. Max, Team, and Enterprise need measured usage, eligible API spend, a required feature, or governance requirements. Before upgrading, try the needed document or deck on Free; a Team buyer should assign seat types and have an owner enable connectors and claim the API pool.
