Kick Bookkeeping

Kick bookkeeping is a strong fit for a U.S. service business that wants routine transaction work automated and will still review its books. Its 3 October 2026 releases extend that automation into check paperwork, account structure and revenue schedules, but the owner or accountant still has decisions to make.

Kick Bookkeeping: What It Is

Kick is an accounting system with its own ledger, the record behind your financial statements. It connects financial accounts, categorizes transactions, matches supporting documents and produces reports; an AI assistant can also prepare changes through its connector. That makes it a possible replacement for the software and repetitive entry work in your current setup. Whether it replaces your part-time bookkeeper depends on who will investigate exceptions, check the reports and finish the close, the process of reviewing and finalizing a period's books.

Kick

Verified against Kick's live pricing, documentation and changelog on November 3, 2026. This is a documentation-based evaluation, not a connected-account test. The verdict turns on four things: whether your data arrives with enough detail, whether you can review proposed changes, whether the reports are complete, and whether someone owns the remaining work. The dated release list is on Kick's homepage.

Who Kick Accounting Software Fits

Kick fits a consultant, agency owner or local-services business whose financial activity is mostly bank payments, cards, customer receipts and supported payroll. It is most attractive when repetitive coding is the burden and the owner or accountant is willing to review exceptions.

The documented entity types include sole proprietorships, single-owner and multiple-owner LLCs, partnerships, S corporations and C corporations. Kick also lists a “No legal entity” option. These are product coverage labels, not a recommendation about business structure. Its accountant FAQ limits current coverage to U.S.-based businesses transacting in USD. Entity documentation, country and currency scope.

An accountant managing several related businesses can also use Kick: each entity has separate books and reports, and moving or splitting shared expenses can create the intercompany entries automatically. That workflow requires a multi-entity plan. Multi-entity documentation.

Skip Kick as your default choice if you need foreign-currency books, operational inventory management, or a service provider to take responsibility for the monthly close. The first is outside its documented scope. Inventory quantity tracking and stock-costing workflows are not established by the documentation reviewed here, so inventory support remains unverified. For those operational requirements, shortlist QuickBooks Online with an appropriately scoped bookkeeper; for a dedicated bookkeeping service, compare Pilot Core.

The short comparison is about who does the work. Each product fact below comes from its maker; the fit judgments are this review's analysis.

QuickBooks Online + a Bookkeeper: Keep the Operating System You Need

QuickBooks Online is the better starting point for an inventory-led retailer when its documented inventory and currency features match the business. An independent bookkeeper's scope must be agreed separately. Intuit's own Expert Full Service is a useful concrete benchmark: it includes monthly categorization, reconciliation and reporting, but explicitly excludes inventory management, payroll management, sending invoices and paying bills. Software capability and service coverage are separate purchases. QuickBooks inventory, supported currencies, service scope.

Pilot: Buy the Human Service Tier Deliberately

Pilot Core fits the founder who wants a service team to handle and explain the books. Pilot distinguishes that offer from Essentials, its AI-led cash-basis service using bank and card data. Core adds a U.S.-based bookkeeper, cash or accrual accounting and a custom chart. A founder buying Pilot specifically to replace a part-time bookkeeper should evaluate Core's scope, rather than assume the lowest tier includes the same human service. Pilot plan definitions.

Digits: Compare Another Automated Ledger

Digits is the closest software-led alternative in this shortlist. Its Essentials plan includes AI bookkeeping and reconciliation alongside invoicing, bill pay and financial statements. Core adds department and location tracking and automated schedules. Professional accounting services are available through partners, so a software subscription should not be mistaken for a dedicated human engagement. Digits features and service boundaries.

Kick Accounting: Four Workflows That Matter

1. Bring in Detailed Transactions, Then Teach Categorization

Kick is most useful when it receives the detail behind a payment, rather than only the amount leaving your bank. For an agency owner, that means connecting the card and payment processor as well as the checking account, then checking how the records relate.

The integration docs list these routes:

  • Banks and cards: Plaid connections, plus a direct Mercury connection for bank transactions and statements.
  • Spend: Ramp card transactions, reimbursements and bills.
  • Customer payments: Stripe and PayPal payments, fees and payouts.
  • Payroll: Gusto payroll runs broken out by expense type.
  • Bills and invoices: BILL bills, invoices, vendors and payments.
  • Reporting: Google Sheets can pull refreshed Kick reports.
  • Files: Universal Importer accepts PDF bank statements and CSVs for unsupported institutions or older history.

To connect an account, open Accounts → Add account, authorize the institution, and confirm which accounts are personal or business. Personal-account activity does not automatically post to the business books; you review and move the relevant expenses. Available bank history varies by institution, so a successful connection does not prove that every earlier month arrived. Connection guide.

Once transactions arrive, Kick assigns categories that map to ledger accounts. Low-confidence items stay uncategorized. When you correct an item, Kick can offer to apply the change to similar past and future transactions. Explicit rules override AI categorization. Categorization mechanics.

Consider an agency that buys both client materials and office supplies from the same merchant. A blanket merchant rule would be convenient but could hide the distinction the owner needs. Review the proposed scope before applying a correction broadly. The payoff is fewer repeated decisions without losing the categories that explain project spending.

Payroll is where connection depth matters most. Gusto's direct integration includes payroll splits, domestic contractor payments and reimbursements; departments can sync as Classes. International contractor payments do not sync through that integration. Benefits and retirement payouts also need a manual reconciliation step. With ADP, Paychex, Rippling, QuickBooks Payroll or another provider, the bank feed brings in a lump sum without the same automatic split. Someone must use the provider's payroll journal to classify the components. Gusto integration, payroll workflow.

For a local-services owner, switching bookkeeping software therefore does not eliminate payroll review. Gusto can remove part of the preparation; another payroll provider leaves more work with the owner or accountant.

2. Reconcile the Account, Including Check Paperwork

Kick's reconciliation workflow checks the ledger against the bank statement, not just against another dashboard total. Upload a statement PDF in Reconciliation, and Kick extracts the opening balance, closing balance and transaction list. It matches statement lines to the recorded transactions; you resolve missing entries, duplicates and period differences before finishing with an exact closing-balance match. Reconciliation guide.

For a contractor paying suppliers by check, the October 30, 2026 update addresses a particularly awkward gap: the bank description may identify a check without explaining its payee or purpose. Kick's Checks and Deposits release lets an AI assistant work from the paperwork, prepare entries and attach the supporting images.

Kick Checks and Deposits release showing paperwork-based bookkeeping workflows
Kick checks and deposits
  1. Prepare from the source

Give the connected assistant the check images, register, stubs or deposit paperwork. It can extract payees and memos, propose account coding, record outstanding checks and split a batch deposit into its individual payments.

  2. Review the proposed entries

Check the entity, payee, amount, date and account against the paperwork before asking the assistant to apply the changes. A deposit slip explains the components of a deposit; it does not by itself settle how every component should be treated.

  3. Match clearing activity

During reconciliation, match checks and deposits to the bank transactions. Keep uncleared items outstanding and inspect the Check and Deposit detail report for follow-up.

The release says checks and deposits are free for all users and also provides a manual Transactions → New → Add check path. Do not equate that availability with every surrounding feature: MCP access and reconciliation have their own plan gates.

MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is the connector that lets an AI assistant access Kick's tools. Kick's permissions documentation says MCP is read-only by default and changes require explicit confirmation; supported write actions provide a preview. “Agentic” means the assistant can prepare and execute authorized work. It does not mean an extracted check is an approved entry.

The business benefit is concrete even without a claimed time saving: the contractor can review prepared records beside their evidence instead of typing every payee and memo from scratch.

3. Make Reports Match the Business and Recognize Revenue Over Time

Kick's October 16, 2026 Chart of Accounts editor makes the structure behind the reports editable. A chart of accounts is the organized list of accounts used to group transactions. The editor supports nested groups, custom subtotals, reordering and merging duplicate accounts while carrying their transactions and history with them. CoA editor release.

Kick Chart of Accounts editor and accounting-firm template controls

An agency might want retainers and project fees shown separately, with delivery costs grouped consistently beneath them. Set that structure in Accounting → Chart of Accounts so the P&L follows it. The owner gets a report that answers how the business earns money, without rebuilding the same layout in a spreadsheet each month.

For accounting firms, the same release adds templates. A firm can start from a spreadsheet, a client's chart, Kick's default or a prior ledger import, preview the result and apply a standard to relevant clients. Account roles preserve where automations post. The human task is deciding what should be standardized and checking that a template has not erased a client's useful distinctions.

Continuous Revenue Recognition

Kick's October 9, 2026 revenue-recognition release handles a different problem: cash received today may relate to work delivered over time. Recognition is the process of assigning revenue to the period in which it is earned. Kick supports straight-line, daily pro rata, point-in-time and milestone policies, including combinations and different policies for individual invoice lines. Rules can apply those policies, while invoice and payment matching helps prevent counting the same revenue twice. Revenue-recognition release.

Kick continuous revenue-recognition release and reporting preview
Kick revenue recognition

For an illustrative annual software contract worth $12,000, a straight-line policy over 12 equal months would allocate $1,000 to each month. That is arithmetic illustrating a workflow, not a recommendation for a particular contract. The accountant first determines the policy; Kick then applies the schedule. A setup fee or delivery milestone may need a different pattern.

The important operational detail is in the workflow docs: this needs Advanced or Enterprise with the accrual ledger enabled, and applying a policy posts entries across the whole term, including future months. Some rules wait for confirmation. Review the term, policy and report period before reading a waterfall or rollforward, the reports showing scheduled revenue and the movement in the unearned balance.

For a founder selling annual subscriptions, the benefit is a maintained schedule tied to the underlying sale. The remaining job is checking contract changes and approving the accounting treatment.

4. Turn Reviewed Books into Reports and an Accountant Handoff

Kick gives the owner a P&L for income and expenses, a Balance Sheet for assets and obligations, and transaction detail behind the totals. Its monthly review guide also uses Insights and Expenses by Vendor to examine cash movements and recurring spend. Reporting and review workflow.

For an agency deciding whether to add a contractor, start with a reviewed month: clear uncategorized items, match transfers, move relevant personal-paid expenses and answer the accountant's Tasks. Then inspect the revenue and expense lines. A clean-looking profit figure is a poor hiring signal if a disconnected card or unresolved payroll item is missing from it.

Kick documentation describing the Excel Year-End Tax Package
Kick year-end handoff

The Tax Package is an Excel workbook with five tabs: Cover Page, Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss, General Ledger and Trial Balance. The trial balance lists account balances; the ledger provides the individual records. The cover page carries the entity details, accounting basis, period and notes.

Open Accounting → Year-End Tax Package for the relevant available year. The docs describe a package for the prior calendar year, so do not assume a current-year dashboard is already a completed year-end package.

Kick's tax-prep guide puts the cleanup before the download: complete account sync, resolve categories and transfers, reconcile statements, finalize accountant entries and supply supporting records. Payroll history, loans and older data can require a bookkeeping partner. This is a financial-record handoff to the preparer, not evidence that a return has been filed.

Kick Pricing: The Plan a Small Business Should Evaluate

Kick Basic is the relevant starting point for a single-entity, cash-basis business seeking ongoing automation. The live page lists $40/m and $480 billed annually, alongside a monthly-billing label. Basic adds unlimited categorization, reconciliation, statement sync, Universal Importer, MCP/CLI and Gusto. The plan below it, Free, is limited to 250 transactions per year and one entity. Kick's current pricing.

Kick business pricing showing Free and Basic with their feature boundaries
Kick pricing

That free allowance averages about 21 transactions a month across a year; it is an annual cap, not a monthly allowance. Even a modest owner-operated business can outgrow it quickly. More importantly, Basic contains the reconciliation workflow this review relies on.

The software component works out to $40 per monthly close if you complete all 12 closes during the annual subscription. Add the actual cost of the person reviewing those books. If review costs R per month, the comparable recurring cost is $40 + R, before migration or separate services. That is the number to compare with your current software-plus-bookkeeper arrangement. It is not a measured saving or a promise that Kick completes the close for that amount.

Plus is the relevant upgrade for accrual books, Classes or multiple entities; Advanced is the gate for continuous revenue recognition and consolidation. Choose for the workflow you need. A Basic purchase does not include every October capability discussed above, and the full plan ladder belongs on Kick's pricing page.

The Limitations That Change the Decision

Kick's limits matter most when they leave work that nobody has agreed to do.

The owner still has an exception queue. Categorization uncertainty, unmatched transfers, disconnected feeds and accountant questions can all hold up a complete report. Kick's own monthly review makes that responsibility explicit. If the reason you hired a bookkeeper was to avoid investigating these items, software alone may not solve your problem.

Reconciliation has a restricted undo path. Only the most recent reconciliation for an account can be undone; older reconciliations cannot. Period locks can also block undo. For an accountant correcting historical books, this is a workflow constraint worth checking before finalizing successive periods. Documented reconciliation limits.

Accrual is not automatic completeness. The accrual ledger starts blank and posts after the relevant accounts are confirmed through tasks, rules or manual selection. Enabling the ledger is a setup action, not proof that all earned revenue and incurred expenses are represented. Ledger behavior.

Payroll coverage is uneven. Gusto has a richer integration, but international contractor payments and some benefit reconciliation still need attention. Another provider's bank debit is not the same as a detailed payroll integration. Payroll boundaries.

Country, currency and inventory fit are buying gates. U.S./USD coverage is documented. Operational stock management is unverified in the reviewed docs. A business outside that scope should keep a system with documented coverage instead of budgeting around an assumed feature. Coverage FAQ, documentation index.

Bank-feed history is not a full migration. Connections pull the history the bank supplies. Earlier periods and missing records need import and review, and an overlapping import can introduce duplicates. For an established business, decide the cutover period with the person responsible for the books before treating the new ledger as complete. Connection guide, duplicate causes.

Kick AI Accounting: The Decision Rule

Kick earns a place on the shortlist when your business fits its documented U.S./USD scope, the required integrations provide sufficient detail, and someone will own the review. Choose it when repetitive preparation is the work you want to remove. Choose a properly scoped bookkeeping service when responsibility for the close is the work you want to hand over.

Keep QuickBooks Online with an appropriate bookkeeper when inventory, currency requirements or an established workflow would make migration costly. Choose Pilot Core when a dedicated service team is central to the purchase. Compare Digits when you want another automated ledger with invoicing and bill pay in the software package.

Next week, use one representative closed month for the evaluation. Include the ordinary recurring transactions and the awkward cases your business encounters: a shared expense, a refund, a payroll debit, an outstanding check or a deposit containing several payments. Compare the result with the reviewed source records, record the exceptions and the time needed to resolve them, and check the final reports with your accountant. Do that before deciding whether to reduce an existing bookkeeping engagement. Explore Kick once the fit is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best accounting software for bookkeeping businesses?

For a firm willing to work in Kick's ledger, its chart templates and reviewable automation make it worth evaluating on a representative client. For clients whose operational requirements call for QuickBooks, keeping that ledger may be the better choice. Match the platform to the client work and the review process, rather than the AI label.

Can I hire someone to do my QuickBooks?

Yes. Intuit offers Expert Full Service Bookkeeping with a dedicated bookkeeper, monthly categorization and reconciliation. Its stated exclusions include inventory management, bill payment and payroll management, so check the engagement scope against the work you want done. Intuit's service details.

How to catch up on bookkeeping?

Confirm the required period and account coverage, import missing records, resolve categories and transfers, and reconcile against statements before generating reports. Kick's tax-prep guide identifies payroll, loans and older history as cases where a bookkeeping partner can help. Kick's catch-up and handoff guidance.

How do I start an online bookkeeping business?

Begin with a defined service scope, a repeatable process and the accounting competence to review the work. Kick's firm templates can help standardize client charts, but choosing software does not establish that you can deliver the service. This review evaluates the platform, not business formation or professional requirements.

Why are bookkeepers declining?

This review does not establish a decline in the profession. Kick demonstrates automation of specific tasks, including categorization and statement matching; its documentation still assigns unresolved items and review to people. Task automation alone is not evidence of an employment trend.

What is a bookkeeper hourly rate?

There is no verified market-wide hourly rate in this evaluation. Ask for a quote covering your transaction volume, payroll, reconciliations, historical cleanup and reporting needs. A software subscription price is not a human bookkeeping rate.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

AI can take over portions of preparation. Kick's documented workflow still needs someone to resolve differences, choose policies, approve changes and check the completed books. Whether that is the owner or a professional depends on the business and the work involved.

Is $300 a month reasonable for monthly bookkeeping?

Judge the quote by its scope: who reconciles, resolves exceptions, completes the close and delivers the reports. Compare that with the software and review work you would retain using Kick. The amount in the question alone does not establish value.

Can I be a bookkeeper without a degree?

Kick's documentation does not establish hiring or qualification requirements. For evaluating an AI bookkeeping workflow, the practical question is whether the responsible person can verify records, investigate differences and recognize when specialist help is needed.

Use the AI Business Workflow Audit Checklist to map the records, automated actions, reviewer and remaining work before changing your bookkeeping setup.
