Multimodal AI: What It Means for Your Business
What multimodal AI accepts and returns, how current models differ, and what invoices, meetings, product videos and voice agents need.
Published

Multimodal AI lets you hand a model the invoice, screenshot or recording instead of describing it first, but you still have to check what comes back. Verified on 19 October 2026, the OpenAI GPT-6, Google Gemini 4 Argon, Anthropic Claude and Meta Muse Spark Open families covered here all list text as their native output. Producing speech or an image is a separate capability, supplied by a different model or tool.
What is multimodal AI?
Multimodal AI works with more than one type of information, such as text and images, within the same task. A modality is simply an information type. Instead of typing every detail from a supplier's invoice, you can provide the page and ask which purchase order it belongs to. The model has both your written question and the visual evidence.
Think of briefing a colleague. You can describe a damaged package, show a photograph, or show the photograph while explaining what the customer ordered. Combining the evidence can make the problem clearer. It does not guarantee that the colleague reads the label correctly or knows your refund policy.
The useful distinction is between understanding media and making media. A model that accepts a product video for analysis has video input. A model that creates a new product video has video output. Those are separate boxes on the specification sheet. A file is also a container: a PDF can contain text, photographs and charts, while a spreadsheet contains structured records. Accepting the container does not establish which contents reach the model.
How does multimodal AI work?
The system converts supported text, images, sound or video into representations the model can process together, then produces a supported output. Some models handle several media types directly; a surrounding application may instead extract text, sample video frames, transcribe audio or call another model. For a product lead, the consequential question is what survives those steps. If a customer recording becomes a transcript, the words may survive while a gesture, a sound or an on-screen warning disappears.
Multimodal generative AI models: current inputs and outputs
Choose the input and output pair your job needs before choosing the model name. The matrix below normalizes the makers' live documentation, checked on 19 October 2026. It describes the named models and documented API paths, not every feature bundled into their consumer apps. An API is the interface your software uses to call a model.
“Text output” includes written analysis and code. Tool calls or files created by an attached tool are separate from the model's native media output. The final row is a dedicated voice model, included to show what changes when spoken output is required.
The file entries need their own qualification. OpenAI's file-input guide specifies different processing for PDFs, ordinary documents and spreadsheets. Anthropic's PDF guide describes supplying page images alongside extracted text. These are documented ingestion features, not evidence that every arbitrary attachment is understood intact.
OpenAI GPT-6: seeing an image does not mean generating one
OpenAI GPT-6 is a family of models that can reason over text and images. For a business reading screenshots or preparing a draft from a document, those inputs may be all that is needed. For a meeting recording, the model's own audio column matters more than the capabilities of the app around it.
OpenAI documents an image-generation tool that calls a GPT Image model. A GPT-6 application can therefore produce an image through that tool while GPT-6's native output remains text. That distinction explains an apparently contradictory demo without pretending the feature does not exist. See the image tool documentation and the site's GPT-6 guide for the family and access details.
Google Gemini 4 Argon: recordings in, written answers out
Google Gemini 4 Argon is a reasoning model whose supported inputs include audio, video and PDF. That makes it a direct candidate for asking questions about meeting recordings or product footage. Its model page explicitly marks audio generation and the Live API as unsupported, so a successful recording summary does not qualify the same model as your live telephone agent.
For a product lead, the first decision is whether the deliverable is a written answer about existing media or a conversation happening now. Keep those requirements separate. The Gemini 4 Argon explainer covers the wider integration decision.
Anthropic Claude: document and screenshot analysis
Anthropic Claude is a model family with text and image inputs and text output. Its PDF path supplies both page text and page images, which matters when an invoice total, chart legend or document layout carries meaning. For meeting audio, plan an explicit transcription step before sending the resulting text to these models.
A clean written summary cannot prove that a tiny label was read correctly. Anthropic warns about low-quality images and approximate counts, so document review still needs source evidence. The Claude Opus versus Sonnet guide addresses the model choice once the input route is settled.
Meta Muse Spark Open: deployment freedom has a separate boundary
Meta Muse Spark Open is an open-weight model, meaning its model weights can be downloaded for deployment. Its own model card lists text, image, video and audio inputs, with text output. Those media capabilities are relevant whether a technical team operates the model itself or uses a hosted provider.
Open weights do not create speech output or guarantee that a particular host accepts every input format. Meta also warns that quantized inference, which uses reduced numerical precision, can change quality in edge cases. Confirm the deployed configuration and media support before building around it. The Muse Spark Open guide covers the deployment decision in more detail.
A multimodal AI platform can lose information before the model sees it
Inspect the file path when a model misses a chart that was plainly visible in the attachment. The problem may be ingestion, the process that turns an uploaded file into model input, rather than reasoning.
OpenAI's Responses API supplies both text and page images for PDFs. For non-PDF documents such as presentations and word-processing files, its file-input path extracts text but does not include embedded images or charts. OpenAI recommends converting to PDF when those visuals matter. Its spreadsheet path parses up to the first 1,000 rows per sheet and adds summary and header metadata; that is not the same as handing over an entire workbook for exhaustive analysis. These are documented properties of that input path, not universal limits on every tool available in an OpenAI application. File-input documentation.

Imagine a sales lead asking why a quarterly deck shows falling renewals. If the chart is an embedded image and only slide text reaches the model, the question is missing its main evidence. Convert the deck to PDF or provide the relevant chart image, then ask for the chart's labels and values before asking for an explanation.
For a workbook reconciliation, use a route that reads the complete underlying data and performs explicit calculations. A model-generated narrative should explain the result after the records have been processed. It should not substitute for checking which rows were included.
Three multimodal AI applications for business
Start where media already causes someone to retype, replay or explain information. The practical gain is removing that translation step while preserving a way to check the answer. The following are proposed workflows, not claimed test results.
Multimodal AI examples: invoice and screenshot intake
A senior operations lead can use document or image input to prepare a structured draft for an existing workflow. Consider a distributor receiving supplier invoices in several layouts, plus screenshots of failed order submissions. The goal is a usable draft record with evidence, not a fluent description of the attachment.
For an invoice, specify the fields you need: vendor, invoice identifier, currency, total, purchase-order reference and the page supporting each field. Tell the model to leave an illegible field unknown. Compare totals with arithmetic outside the model and match the purchase-order reference against the purchasing system. A document that looks plausible must not be enough to change payment details.
For a support screenshot, provide the customer’s description and the full visible error state. Ask for the exact displayed error, the affected step and a proposed category. A cropped close-up can help with small text, but retain the wider screenshot so the model does not lose context. OpenAI's vision guide explicitly recommends enlarging small text and warns about rotated text and incorrect descriptions. Vision limitations.
What this needs: a documented image or PDF input path, a fixed set of output fields, an authoritative system to check identifiers and totals, and an exception queue with the original attachment. GPT-6 and Claude are candidates for this input shape; the matrix also shows image support in Gemini and Muse Spark Open. Capability support gets a model into the pilot. It does not establish which one reads your suppliers' documents best.
Adopt now if an operator can approve a prepared record faster than creating it from scratch. Wait if the proposal requires accepting every extracted value without verification. If suppliers already send clean structured records, keep that direct integration; photographing them would add uncertainty.
Recorded meetings and product video: retain the evidence
A product lead can ask an audio-capable model to turn a meeting recording into a draft decision log, or ask a video-capable model to locate moments in a product demonstration. Gemini and Muse Spark Open list both media types as inputs. Google specifically documents audio transcription and summarization. Audio-understanding guide.
For a meeting, ask for decisions, proposed actions, named owners when explicitly stated, unresolved questions and supporting timestamps. Require a distinction between “we decided” and “someone suggested.” An unclear speaker or uncertain deadline belongs in the unresolved section. The reviewer should be able to open the relevant passage, not search a polished summary for clues about where it came from.
For a product video, ask where the user encounters an error or how the packaging opens. The output can be a timestamped review list that helps an editor or product manager find footage. Do not describe this as generating a finished video. Understanding the source recording and creating an edited asset are different jobs.
What this needs: the actual audio or video input, timestamped source access, a prompt that defines the event being sought, and media settings suited to the detail. A transcript is a reasonable alternative when only the spoken words matter. It is insufficient when the decisive evidence is a silent screen change or a visible defect.
Google's default video mode samples 1 frame per second, including on Gemini 4. Its documentation warns that fast action can lose detail. Argon also supports opt-in agentic video processing, where the model explores the timeline and selectively loads evidence. That is a useful retrieval option, but it is not a guarantee that every moment was inspected. For a brief button flash or a fast mechanical action, request focused inspection and check the footage yourself. Video-processing documentation.
Adopt now for locating evidence and drafting notes from recordings. Wait on unattended quality certification or definitive claims about events too brief to survive the input path.
A multimodal AI assistant for live voice service
A service business answering customer calls needs audio output, interruption handling and access to its operational systems. A model that can summarize a recording supplies only part of that job.
OpenAI GPT-Live 1 is a concrete example of a separate voice route: its model page lists audio and text input and output, simultaneous listening and speaking, and delegation to a backend agent for reasoning and tool work. It does not accept images or video. If a caller also sends a photograph, the application needs a separate image-capable route and a way to connect the result to the conversation. GPT-Live 1 specifications.
For a home-services company, a useful first scope is collecting the problem description, checking a booking system for available appointments, and preparing a booking for confirmation. Keep the address and requested service in structured business records, even though the conversation is spoken. A pleasant voice is not evidence that an appointment was saved.
What this needs: a live audio connection, a model or service that speaks, a backend that checks actual availability, explicit rules for commitments, and transfer to a person when the request falls outside scope. Test interruption, silence, corrections and a failed booking lookup. The customer experience includes those failures, not just the clean demonstration.
Adopt now for bounded intake and information retrieval with a clear handoff. Wait if the service cannot recover when the caller corrects an address or the scheduling system fails. Argon's recording support alone does not meet this requirement; its model page explicitly excludes the Live API and audio generation.
Where multimodal AI still fails
More input types give a model more evidence, not guaranteed perception or judgment. The makers' own documentation names failures that should shape the workflow.
Small text, layout and counts remain weak points. OpenAI warns about small or rotated text, graph styles, precise spatial reasoning and approximate counts. Anthropic similarly warns about poor images, approximate coordinates and counts. A warehouse stock photograph can help flag a possible issue, but an exact count should come from inventory records or a validated counting process. A dense invoice needs field-level checking, not a single “looks right” approval. OpenAI vision limits, Claude vision limits.
A video upload can fail before meaningful analysis happens. Meta says very short or low-resolution videos, such as clips around 100 pixels, can cause Muse Spark Open to reply that it cannot view the video. It recommends longer clips or a short-side resolution of 448 pixels or more. Preserve the source quality before deciding that a model is incapable of the task. This is a preparation recommendation, not an accuracy guarantee. Meta's model card.
Confident answers can still be invented. Google's Argon model card names hallucinations, meaning invented or incorrect claims, and occasional slowness or timeouts. Meta warns about inaccurate responses and errors in multi-step reasoning, especially in unfamiliar situations. A founder building a workflow should define what happens when the model cannot finish or its answer cannot be verified: retry a bounded task, request better evidence, or route to a reviewer. Do not let a missing response silently become an accepted result. Gemini model card, Meta model card.
Image analysis is not an authenticity verdict. Anthropic explicitly says Claude cannot reliably determine whether an image is AI-generated. Asking “is this refund photo fake?” is therefore a poor approval rule. Check order history, shipping evidence and your established exception process instead. Claude's documented limitations.
The useful limits are often smaller than the headline context window. OpenAI's direct file-input path requires each file to be under 50 MB, with 50 MB combined per request. Claude's PDF guide lists a 32 MB request limit, varying by platform, and up to 600 pages for the relevant large-context requests; the allowance falls to 100 pages below a 1M-token context window. The rest of the request and actual context consumption still count. A token is a processing unit, not a page, and a page allowance does not promise perfect extraction. Split a document around the task you need answered. OpenAI file limits, Claude PDF requirements.
What is overhyped, and what to do differently
The overstatement is treating “multimodal” as a complete workflow specification. It tells you that several information types are involved. It does not tell you which ones, which direction they travel, or whether the surrounding application preserves them.
For operators, the consequence is practical: keep the original attachment beside the draft and make unknown values visible. Start with a reviewer checking proposed work. Remove review only for a bounded case whose failures you can detect reliably.
For builders, define the exact model, API route, preprocessing and output format. Test an embedded chart, a blurry label and a short event in a video. A successful upload does not prove that the decisive evidence reached the model. Check the contents available to it.
For buyers, ask a supplier to demonstrate your input and your required output in the proposed product. A consumer app demonstration does not establish the capabilities of the API or plan being sold. Require a clear answer about what happens when information is missing and who owns the correction.

The unaffected group is anyone whose job already has clean structured inputs and a reliable process based on fixed rules. Multimodal support is useful when evidence is trapped in media. It is not a reason to replace a working database query with a screenshot.
The Monday move: pilot one input-to-output job
Choose a job that ends in a checkable draft. A senior operator might pick invoice intake; a product lead might pick evidence retrieval from customer recordings; a technical founder might pick voice intake with a human handoff.
Write the input and deliverable
For example: supplier PDF in, proposed invoice fields plus page evidence out. Name who approves the draft and what counts as a correct result.
Assemble representative evidence
Start with a small set, such as 20 past items, including clean examples, missing information and difficult media. Record the expected answers before running the pilot. This is a proposed evaluation set, not a benchmark result.
Check the entire route
Use the exact model and file or media path intended for deployment. Verify that charts, spoken words and short visual events survive where the task needs them. Preserve originals and returned evidence.
Measure useful work
Track accepted drafts, material errors, time spent reviewing and safe returns of unknown information. Expand only when the result saves effort without hiding mistakes. Keep failures in the test set when the model or input path changes.
Frequently asked questions
:::faq-item{q="What does "multimodal dataset" mean?"}
It is a collection containing multiple information types, often linked examples such as an image and its caption or a recording and its transcript. The relationship between those parts is what makes the combined evidence useful.
:::
Is ChatGPT an AI model?
ChatGPT is an application that uses AI models and tools. GPT-6 names a model family. Keep the application, the selected model and any attached tools separate when checking a capability. ChatGPT web guide.
What describes a multimodal gen AI application?
An application that uses multiple information types to produce a response: for example, a customer photo and written complaint becoming a draft support reply. The reply can be text even though the input is multimodal.
What does multimodality in AI mean?
It means working across more than one information type, such as text, images, audio or video. It does not mean that every model accepts and produces every type.
Is ChatGPT a multimodal AI?
Yes, in the application-level sense. For a specific task, check the selected model and enabled tools. OpenAI's current GPT-6 model pages list text and image input with text output; separate tools and models supply other media capabilities.
Can you give me an example of multimodal AI?
Providing a screenshot together with “what error is visible?” and receiving a written explanation is a multimodal task. The model combines the image with the question.
What is the best multimodal AI?
Start with the required input and output. Gemini 4 Argon and Muse Spark Open list recorded audio and video inputs; GPT-6 and Claude provide text and image routes for document work. Live spoken interaction needs a voice-capable route. Compare acceptable results on your own evidence before choosing.
Can you give me five examples of multimodal texts?
An illustrated instruction manual, an infographic, a captioned video, a webpage combining words and photographs, and a slide presentation with narration. Here, “text” means a communication artifact, not only written characters.
What is the difference between LLM and multimodal?
LLM means large language model and describes a class of model. Multimodal describes the information types a system works with. The labels can overlap: a language model can also accept images. Check the actual modality specification instead of treating the terms as opposites.
