ChatGPT Appshots Cut Context Copying on Windows
Use ChatGPT Appshots on Windows to share an app window, reduce context copying, and check what text and images enter the chat.

ChatGPT desktop release 26.908 put Appshots on Windows on September 11, 2026. The business consequence is less time rebuilding app context by hand: you can attach the frontmost window to a chat, then spend that time checking the answer instead of copying the setup.
What a ChatGPT Appshot actually is
An Appshot is a deliberate attachment from the app window in front of you. Bring an email, error dialog, settings panel, document, or preview to the front, press both Alt keys, and ChatGPT adds that window's context to a chat.
That context has two parts. The first is an image of the visible window. The second is available text, meaning text the app exposes to ChatGPT. That text can include words on screen and words outside the visible scroll area when the app makes them available.
This is the part worth understanding. The screenshot shows what your eyes can see, while the text layer may give ChatGPT more of the document than the screenshot shows. The two layers are related, but they aren't guaranteed to contain the same amount of information.
After it enters the chat, an Appshot behaves like a file or image attachment. ChatGPT stores it locally in the session file, but taking the Appshot still shares the captured image and available text with ChatGPT.
This is also why Appshots are different from ChatGPT Computer History on Mac. Computer History is about recalling activity over time. An Appshot is a deliberate handoff of one frontmost window for the task in front of you.
The budget line that changed is preparation time
There is no honest savings number to copy from a launch note. The useful math is your own labor time on a repeated task.
Start with the old route. Count the time spent selecting the useful text, cleaning the paste, taking a screenshot, changing windows, explaining what the screenshot means, and correcting anything lost in that handoff.
Then count the Appshot route. Include the time to put the right window in front, check it for sensitive content, capture it, review the attachment, write the request, and correct the result.
The calculation is simple:
Net preparation saving = old preparation and correction time minus Appshot preparation and correction time.
For a client team, multiply that saved time by how often the task happens and by the team's loaded labor cost, which means pay plus the real cost of employing that person. If correction work rises because ChatGPT missed off-screen text or read an incomplete view, the apparent shortcut didn't save money.
That's the whole consequence. Appshots remove hand assembly from the context handoff. They do not remove judgment from the work.
Set the destination before you build a habit
The destination setting matters because the shortcut can otherwise put a client email or error window into a chat you didn't mean to use.
Choose where Appshots go
Open the ChatGPT desktop app settings and find Appshot destination. Choose Current chat when you want a controlled, repeatable workflow. Choose New chat when each capture should begin clean. Automatic starts a new chat unless you interacted with a chat in the last 60 seconds, in which case the Appshot goes to that recent chat.
Prepare the source window
Bring only the app window you need to the front. Check names, account details, signatures, notifications, and any other material that doesn't belong in the task before you capture it.
Take the Appshot
Press both Alt keys on Windows. You can replace this with a custom Appshots hotkey in ChatGPT settings. Appshots open in the main ChatGPT app on Windows.
Review the attachment, then ask
Confirm that the attachment shows the right window and that your prompt names the job. Review improves the workflow, but it is not a privacy undo button: the capture has already shared its image and available text with ChatGPT.
Prepare a client reply from an email
An account manager or agency operator often needs to turn one client email into a clear reply, but the useful context is mixed with signatures, quoted history, dates, and commitments. Copying that by hand is slow, and a partial copy can change the meaning.
Put the email window in front. Check that the visible thread belongs in ChatGPT. Capture it into a dedicated client chat, inspect the attachment, then use a request that forces the answer to separate evidence from gaps:
Draft a reply to the client using only facts in this attachment. Separate confirmed commitments from open questions. Do not send anything. Flag any detail you cannot read.
The payoff is a prepared draft with less context assembly. The operator still checks names, dates, money, promises, recipients, and tone before anything leaves the company.
Gmail is a special case. OpenAI says Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides may provide only the visible screenshot, without the full document or off-screen text. If the needed part of the thread isn't visible, scroll to it and take another Appshot. Consecutive Appshots are added to the same chat.
Explain an error window without retyping it
A support specialist or developer can use the same workflow on an error dialog, failed deployment panel, or settings screen. The visual state matters here: the exact wording, disabled controls, selected option, and nearby status can change the diagnosis.
Bring the error window to the front, capture it, then ask:
Explain this error in plain words. List what is visible, what you infer, and the next check. Do not invent a version, path, or setting that isn't shown.
That prompt gives the answer a boundary. It can use the image and exposed text, but it has to label assumptions rather than presenting them as evidence.
The payoff isn't an automatic fix. It is a cleaner first diagnosis with less retyping and less risk that you paraphrase the error incorrectly. A support lead can measure whether that shortens triage without increasing wrong turns.
Turn an app state into an operations handoff
An operations manager can capture a settings panel or current app state and ask ChatGPT to turn it into a next-step checklist. This works best when the next person needs to know what is selected now, what still needs a decision, and which label to look for in the interface.
Use a narrow request:
Turn this window into a handoff checklist. Keep every visible setting name exactly as shown. Mark anything you cannot confirm from the attachment.
The payoff is less time describing a screen in Slack or email. The checklist is still a draft. The source app owns the real state, so the next person should verify it there.
The honest limits
The opposite problem also exists. Some Google apps may provide only the screenshot you can see. ChatGPT may receive less context than you expect, and a confident answer can still be incomplete.
Appshots capture only the frontmost window. They don't gather the rest of the desktop, and they don't turn a partial window into a complete client record, bug report, or document.
The shortcut is limited to the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows. A chat resumed in the CLI can contain an existing Appshot, but the CLI can't create a new one. An organization can also block Appshots, so update the desktop app, check the configured hotkey, and confirm the feature is allowed if it doesn't work.
Most important, capture is the sharing action. Reviewing the attachment afterward helps you catch a wrong window and write a better prompt, but sensitive material should be removed or avoided before you press the keys.
Who should act now
- Act this week if you repeatedly prepare client replies, explain error windows, or describe app settings to another person. Use a dedicated chat and measure the whole task, including corrections.
- Wait if the source regularly contains sensitive material you can't isolate, or if the app exposes an incomplete view that creates more checking than copying.
- You are mostly unaffected if you work only in ChatGPT on the web, need a background record of activity, or already pass structured data through a trusted integration. Appshots solve a deliberate desktop context handoff.
