SE Ranking vs Semrush in 2026

SE Ranking vs Semrush for founders and small agencies: daily tracking, research, audits, client reporting and the AI visibility limits that decide the fit.

SE Ranking vs Semrush in 2026

SE Ranking is the better starting point for a founder or small agency that needs 2,000 daily tracked keywords across 10 projects. SE Ranking vs Semrush turns on capacity first: Core covers that workload before the extra team seat, while Semrush Pro+ stops at 1,500 keywords and needs a custom upgrade. Pay for Semrush when its research workflow earns the difference, not simply to add AI visibility.

SE Ranking vs Semrush: which should you pick?

Choose SE Ranking for recurring delivery across small client accounts. SE Ranking is an SEO and AI visibility platform for researching opportunities, monitoring rankings, auditing websites and reporting progress. Core has the keyword and project capacity this portfolio needs; Growth provides a fully priced option with enough manager seats included. A founder doing their own SEO should start with the smallest configuration that clears their actual workload.

Choose Semrush for research-led work that repeatedly informs paid client decisions. Semrush combines search research, technical audits and ranking tools with AI visibility research and tracking. Its case is strongest for an agency that regularly examines competitor gaps, historical performance and competing landing pages before recommending what to build. For the specified workload, get a written capacity quote before choosing it: the publicly priced Pro+ package is too small on keywords.

Choose neither when the next action is already obvious. A local-services owner with unfinished service pages and unresolved indexing problems needs time assigned to those jobs. Start with Google Search Console, Google's free reports on your own site's Search performance. Buy competitor research and scheduled monitoring when they will change a decision you can act on.

Prices and capabilities were checked against both makers' live pages on 23 October 2026. Prices below are USD. The evaluation uses documented capacity, our workload calculations and public product pages; it does not claim a hands-on accuracy benchmark.

Daily rank tracking: SE Ranking wins this workload

SE Ranking wins on the included daily keyword capacity a small agency needs. Rank tracking means repeatedly checking where chosen pages appear for a defined query, location and device. Core's allowance covers the requested portfolio without buying additional keywords. Its Position Tracking page describes location and device views, conventional rankings and AI results.

SE Ranking: keyword and AI rank tracking

For a two-person agency, the useful outcome is a prioritized weekly work list: which client's commercial page fell, whether the intended landing page ranks, and what needs investigation. An equal allocation would give each of the 10 projects 200 tracked targets. You can allocate unevenly instead; a large ecommerce account should not receive the same allowance as a small brochure site merely to make the spreadsheet tidy.

Semrush also updates tracked keywords daily. The difference is capacity, not an established accuracy advantage: Pro+ covers 1,500 of the required 2,000 targets, leaving a 500-keyword shortfall, or 25% of the workload. Its Position Tracking documentation directs buyers needing more keywords to sales for a custom solution.

Proportional paper bars show SE Ranking Core covering 100 percent of a 2000-keyword target and Semrush Pro+ covering 75 percent, leaving 500 keywords short
Calculated from published allowances: Core covers the assigned keyword workload; Pro+ covers three quarters before a custom upgrade.

Count targets before comparing invoices. Semrush explicitly says that a keyword repeated in another location or device target consumes additional allowance. A list of unique phrases is therefore not automatically the billable tracking count. Send both vendors the actual location and device configuration and ask for the capacity it consumes.

Neither vendor's page establishes which tracker is more accurate for your market. A sensible trial compares the same query, location, device and observation time. A result from a different city or a personalized browser session is not a fair accuracy check.

SE Ranking review: the limit that matters here

Core is attractive for delivery capacity, but its single included manager seat does not cover two active colleagues. Growth includes three manager seats, guest links and page-change monitoring. Those are operational reasons to upgrade; a founder working alone should not buy them simply because Growth sounds more complete. The SE Ranking review covers the wider product decision.

Semrush pricing vs SE Ranking pricing: the same team and workload

SE Ranking has a published configuration that covers the workload; Semrush requires a quote to complete the match. The workload is two people with their own access, 10 projects and 2,000 daily keyword targets. Reporting upgrades are excluded from this baseline and priced separately below.

All price inputs in this section come only from SE Ranking's subscription page and Semrush's prices page, checked on the date above. “Annual” means a monthly equivalent for annual billing, not a monthly payment promise.

Semrush pricing: why the visible plan price is not the team total

Semrush Pro+ is $299 on monthly billing or $248.17/month equivalent billed annually. It includes 15 websites and 1,500 daily tracked keywords. Additional users start at $45/month, but the page does not publish an exact Pro+ seat charge or the price of the extra keyword capacity needed here. Advanced advertises 40+ websites and 5,000+ keywords with custom pricing.

That leaves two valid quote routes: Pro+ with the missing capacity and second user, or an Advanced configuration that includes the requested access. It does not leave a defensible public, exact dollar total. Do not revive an older Advanced list price or assume the starting extra-user price applies to every tier. The Semrush pricing guide explains how the surrounding modules affect the bill; today's vendor page governs this comparison.

Semrush cheaper alternative: the matched SE Ranking configurations

SE Ranking Core costs $129 monthly or $103.20/month equivalent on annual billing, and extra manager seats are advertised from $16. Core plus that starting seat charge therefore has a $119.20/month lower bound against the annual base. This is conditional arithmetic, not a guaranteed all-in annual quote: the visible seat row does not fully spell out its billing treatment.

Growth removes that seat ambiguity. Its published price is $279 monthly or $223.20/month equivalent billed annually, including three manager seats, 30 projects and 5,000 daily keywords. It exceeds the assigned workload but is a complete, publicly priced base configuration.

Configuration for the same workloadSE Ranking, annual-base monthly equivalentSemrush
Lean option, no optional AI add-onCore + second seat: from $119.20Quote for 2 users, 10 sites and 2,000 daily keywords
Lean option, entry AI add-onCore + second seat + AI Search: from $190.40Quote the same SEO workload with required AI scope
Fully priced base, no optional AI add-onGrowth: $223.20Advanced or expanded Pro+: custom quote
Fully priced base, entry AI add-onGrowth + AI Search: $294.40Custom quote; bundled AI may already cover the requirement

The fixed annual amounts are $2,678.40 for Growth and $3,532.80 for Growth plus the entry AI Search add-on. Those totals are calculated from the advertised annual rates. On monthly billing, the corresponding totals are $279 and $368. Core remains the leaner route if its extra-seat terms meet your needs.

“Without the add-on” does not mean without AI tracking. SE Ranking Core already advertises daily prompts; Semrush's Starter and Pro+ are SEO + AI Search bundles. SE Ranking's optional entry AI Search add-on adds $89 monthly or $71.20/month equivalent annually. Its pricing card labels the package “200 prompts”; the quota conflict below prevents treating that as an assured extra daily, all-engine allowance.

Site audits: SE Ranking wins on small-agency capacity

SE Ranking offers the more generous entry crawl allowance for this portfolio. An audit crawl checks website pages for technical problems; its monthly page allowance measures how much crawling you can do, not how many unique pages your sites contain forever.

Core includes 250,000 pages per month, with up to 250,000 pages per project. Growth includes 2 million pages per month, with a 1 million page project cap. Those limits are published on SE Ranking's pricing page.

Semrush documents 100,000 pages per month for Starter, 300,000 for Pro+, and 1 million for Advanced, through their respective Pro, Guru and Business SEO Toolkit components. Its per-audit limits are 20,000, 20,000 and 100,000 pages respectively. The distinction matters: a monthly pool does not remove the ceiling on one crawl. Semrush's audit limits and plan mapping.

For an illustrative agency portfolio of 10 sites with 5,000 crawlable pages each, four full crawls consume 200,000 page checks. That fits Core. Double each site's size and the same schedule consumes 400,000, exceeding both Core and Pro+. This is a workload calculation, not a measured customer result.

Semrush earns consideration when crawl configuration is central to the job. Its documentation describes JavaScript rendering on Guru and Business, which lets the crawler execute scripts, plus sitemap and uploaded-URL crawl sources. A software company's script-heavy site may need that behavior more than a larger headline page pool. Semrush audit configuration.

For a small agency, scope the crawl around pages that can affect leads or sales, then assign fixes. A larger allowance is useful only if someone reviews the issues and verifies the repair.

Keyword and competitor research: Semrush wins for repeated strategic work

Semrush wins when deep competitor research is a regular deliverable. Its keyword research tools connect competitor gaps, keyword discovery and topic planning; Pro+ adds historical SEO data and cannibalization analysis, which identifies pages competing for the same search opportunity.

Semrush public keyword research page showing keyword discovery, competitor gaps and planning capabilities
Semrush: keyword and competitor research

A B2B software agency pitching a new market needs more than a list of popular phrases. It needs to distinguish buyer searches from educational traffic, identify rivals' landing pages, and explain whether an apparent opportunity has persisted. Semrush is worth paying for when that work changes the proposed content budget or sales-page plan often enough to justify the invoice. The Semrush review expands on that operating model.

SE Ranking is sufficient for many founder-led decisions. Its keyword tool provides search volume, difficulty, intent, competing results and historical search-result views. For a local-services business deciding which service page to improve next, those inputs can be enough. Buying a broader research system does not automatically improve the judgment made from them.

Both SE Ranking and Semrush publish their own data inventories. Those vendor-reported totals are not an independently normalized measure of coverage, freshness or accuracy, and a geographic database count is not a count of equally deep markets.

The useful comparison is your market. Before committing, put the same commercial topics and competitor domains into each tool, inspect the landing pages behind the suggestions, and judge whether the results improve a real brief. A bigger global index is a reason to investigate coverage, not proof that every niche is served better.

Semrush gets the edge for link research breadth; SE Ranking covers ordinary monitoring. A backlink is a link from another website. For an agency, the important questions are which relevant sites cite competitors, which links disappeared, and which opportunities deserve outreach time.

Semrush's backlink tools include profile analysis and competitor link-gap research. SE Ranking's Backlink Checker exposes referring domains, anchors, link status and new or lost links. A founder checking whether a hard-earned editorial mention remains live may need no more than the latter.

The recommendation rests on the research workflow, not a claim that one backlink index is more accurate. Neither a vendor's total indexed links nor a third-party database comparison establishes how many relevant opportunities exist for your business. Inspect the referring pages behind the result before turning a link-gap report into an outreach list.

Do not turn a research recommendation into a bundled-feature assumption. Semrush's backlink page also promotes AI PR capabilities, but a feature promoted beside Backlink Analytics is not proof it is included in your SEO package. Buy the outreach workflow only if it is part of the quoted scope and someone will use it.

AI visibility: SE Ranking for an included start, Semrush for broader research

AI visibility alone is not a reason for this reader to pay the Semrush premium. Both products can monitor appearances in AI-generated answers. The decision changes when you need a particular engine, a portfolio of client brands or research beyond the prompts you already know to ask.

A prompt is the question submitted to an AI service. Tracking your own fixed prompt list answers whether visibility changed for those questions. Researching a vendor's broader prompt database answers where opportunities might exist. Those jobs should not be treated as the same quota.

SE Ranking: five advertised platforms, an unresolved add-on unit

SE Ranking's current tracking page names ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Core's pricing lists 100 daily prompts across five platforms, while Growth lists 250. The respective AI competitive-research allowances are 5 and 15 domains. Those domain limits matter to an agency even when the SEO project allowance is sufficient.

The optional add-on expands AI competitive research and includes SE Visible, a separate strategic visibility product. However, its AI Search Add-on help documentation describes the entry allowance as 200 checks per month, defines a check as one prompt on one AI platform, and applies monthly-check language to subscriptions too. The pricing page instead advertises daily base prompts and an add-on labeled 200 prompts.

Those statements do not establish an equivalent delivered daily checking volume. Do not add 100 and 200 and promise a client 300 daily prompts across every engine. Before selling an AI monitoring package, get written confirmation of refresh frequency, engine and location counting, the monthly check ceiling, and which allowance belongs to SE Ranking versus SE Visible.

Semrush: separate daily tracking from market-wide coverage

Semrush's broader AI visibility data covers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. Its data methodology distinguishes a broader research database, weekly Brand Performance data and daily custom tracking. Research refresh language varies within that document, so it should not be treated as a guarantee that every research answer is checked daily.

Its Prompt Tracking guide explicitly documents custom daily tracking for ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Gemini, with desktop searches only. AI Overviews also appear in its Google tracking workflow. Perplexity's appearance in the wider research coverage does not, by itself, establish an identical daily custom campaign option.

Starter includes 50 daily prompts, one Brand Performance domain and 300 AI visibility reports per day. Pro+ raises the prompt allowance to 100, not the advertised Brand Performance domain count. A team managing 10 SEO projects therefore should not assume it can configure 10 client brands for sentiment monitoring on the same included allowance. The standalone AI Visibility Toolkit's documented custom allowance is 25 prompts, so it is not interchangeable with the bundles.

Advanced has a second documentation conflict: its live pricing page says unlimited daily prompts, while the Prompt Tracking help page lists 200. Treat the current pricing page as the advertised offer, and require the actual contracted allocation in the quote. Do not build a client promise around the word “unlimited” without that scope.

A paper decision path separates daily tracking of your own prompts from broader brand research, then asks buyers to confirm engines, quota units and client domains
Choose the AI visibility job first, then confirm the engine, quota unit and client-domain allowance.

Winner for a founder's first AI monitoring workflow: SE Ranking, subject to the quota clarification. Winner for an agency selling broader competitive and brand research: Semrush, when its domain scope and quote fit. Neither deserves a win based only on a larger advertised prompt number.

A brand mention is not a site visit, and a citation is not a sale. Use the findings to decide which product explanations, comparison pages or third-party sources need attention; use your own analytics and customer records to judge business outcomes. The AI visibility tools guide is useful when this becomes a separate buying decision.

Reporting, white-label and seats: SE Ranking wins for a branded client workspace

SE Ranking is the clearer fit when an agency needs a branded client-facing platform. White-label means presenting the service under your agency's branding. Its Agency Pack adds platform and report branding, 30 client seats and unlimited scheduled reporting at $69/month, annual billing only. Client seats should not be counted as extra staff manager seats. SE Ranking's Agency Pack listing.

Core's Report Builder allowance is 10 reports and Growth's is 30. For a two-person agency, first decide whether the deliverable is a report the client receives or a workspace the client signs into. That distinction determines whether the Agency Pack solves a real problem.

Semrush's pricing page lists Base Report at $10/month and Pro Report at $20/month. Pro Report adds branding and white-labeling, external integrations and sharing by link. Those are report capabilities; they do not establish a white-label version of the entire Semrush platform. Confirm how many report purchases your client portfolio requires before multiplying or treating one purchase as unlimited. Semrush reporting add-ons.

Semrush is a reasonable choice for an agency already building its reporting around those integrations. SE Ranking wins this category for the agency that wants the branded platform and client access together. A founder sending one internal update should pay for neither agency presentation layer unless it removes recurring work.

Keep the report short enough to support a decision: what changed, why it matters to leads or revenue, and what happens next. Sending more dashboards can create more explanation work for the same two people.

Semrush alternative: when switching to SE Ranking pays

Switch when the recurring work fits SE Ranking and the saving survives the migration cost. Do not switch merely because the starting price is lower. An agency with historical reports, client access and a familiar research process has a workflow to move, not just a keyword list.

SE Ranking says it supports importing projects and ranking history, with assisted migration available on annual subscriptions. That does not promise that every proprietary score, report layout or AI history series transfers unchanged. SE Ranking's migration terms.

  1. Export the working configuration

Save keyword lists, target locations and devices, tags, preferred landing pages, competitor lists and client report copies. Record the settings beside the export so another person can rebuild the campaign.

  2. Move a representative client first

Choose an account with the features you depend on. Rebuild the tracking, crawl scope and report, then check whether both colleagues can complete their normal tasks with the quoted access.

  3. Preserve the old baseline

Keep an export of the previous reporting period. Label a tool change in client reporting instead of presenting a different vendor's estimated traffic or authority metric as an improvement in performance.

  4. Cancel after the new delivery works

Confirm that scheduled reports arrive, the required targets refresh and the history you need is accessible. Budget overlap and setup time into the decision instead of counting subscription savings from the first day.

Do not switch when a client contract requires a Semrush-specific deliverable, a near-term report depends on its historical view, or the team uses its research features enough to offset the premium. Likewise, moving from SE Ranking to Semrush only makes sense if you can name the research or workflow gap you are paying to close. The broader Semrush alternatives comparison helps when neither of these two clears that requirement.

Semrush vs SE Ranking: the next buying step

Ask for the same written scope from both vendors before buying an annual subscription. Specify two named users, 10 projects, 2,000 daily location/device keyword targets, your monthly crawl requirement, and whether you need branded reports or a branded platform. Add an AI prompt sample with the exact engines, locations, brands and refresh frequency you will sell or use.

For a founder or small agency that gets a satisfactory quota answer, buy SE Ranking on the smallest configuration that meets that scope. Choose Semrush when the completed quote is justified by research you will use repeatedly. If neither report would change next week's work, spend the time improving the pages and measurement you already have.

Frequently asked questions

SE Ranking vs Semrush cost

For the requested two-person, 10-project, 2,000-keyword setup, SE Ranking Growth is a fully priced annual-billing option at $223.20/month equivalent, or $294.40 with the entry AI Search add-on. Core plus a second seat may be cheaper. Semrush requires a custom quote because Pro+ includes only 1,500 keywords; its published base is not a matched total.

Is Semrush any good?

Yes, particularly when competitor research, historical comparisons and technical analysis feed recurring decisions. It is harder to justify for a founder who only needs basic monitoring and is not acting on the additional research.

What are the top 5 SEO tools?

There is no universal top five independent of the job. For this shortlist, choose between SE Ranking and Semrush using tracking capacity, research needs and client delivery requirements. The linked alternatives guide covers a broader field; a popularity ranking is not a substitute for the workload check.

What is a good authority score on Semrush?

There is no single score that is good for every site. Semrush describes Authority Score as a comparative metric: compare relevant competitors and examine the underlying links and traffic, rather than treating a threshold as a business outcome. Semrush's explanation.

What are the key differences between Google Search Console and Semrush?

Google Search Console reports on your own site's Google Search performance and issues. Semrush adds external competitor research and configured monitoring. Use Search Console as a first-party measurement source even if you also buy a commercial research suite. Google's product overview.

Who are Semrush's biggest competitors?

SE Ranking is a direct alternative for the monitoring and agency-delivery jobs covered here. The right shortlist depends on whether you are buying keyword research, backlink analysis, technical crawling or AI visibility, rather than on a single overall competitor ranking.

Semrush alternative free

Start with Google Search Console for your own site. It does not reproduce a paid competitor-research suite. Semrush also advertises a free account with a demo project and 10 reports per day; that is not a replacement for the two-person, 10-project tracking setup in this comparison. Semrush's current free allowance.

What is replacing Google Analytics?

Google Analytics 4 replaced Universal Analytics. Neither SE Ranking nor Semrush is its direct replacement: a search visibility suite and your site's analytics answer different questions. Google's migration explanation.

Is Google Analytics discontinued?

Google Analytics continues as Google Analytics 4. Universal Analytics was the retired generation; do not confuse that retirement with the end of Google's analytics product.

What is the best free alternative to Google Analytics?

There is no universal best option without knowing whether you need visit analytics, conversion measurement or search performance. If your immediate SEO question is which Google searches bring visitors, start with Google Search Console. It is free, but it does not replace an analytics system for behavior across your whole site.

What is the new name for Google Analytics?

The current generation is Google Analytics 4, usually shortened to GA4. It replaced Universal Analytics and uses a different measurement model; switching SEO tools does not migrate that analytics setup.
